Cable vs DSL

Which one is better?
>>
>>52429448

Depends on the ISP.
>>
Dial up
>>
>>52429465
This.Where I live, Century Link has some voodoo magic that lets them push 60/40 through the fucking phone line where comcast can only get us 50/20 through cable.
>>
>>52429448
Fiber
>>
Lifi
>>
>>52429448
How many people in your street already have cable?
>>
From a theoretical technology standpoint? Cable. There's no question about it.

From a reality standpoint? Depends where you live. >>52429465 is correct.
>>
>>52429585
The same shit here, 60/30 and works like a fucking charm.
>>
>>52429585

Cable

I can get 300/20mbit internet from TWC if i wanted to.

If TWC ever gets DOCSIS 3.1 I could possibly get gigabit over cable.

Funny thing is that i have Fiber to my house but for some reason the speeds aren't that great. Read somewhere that FiOS and Google Fiber use different technology so thats why FiOS cant offer gigabit speeds.
>>
>>52429585

Dsl is all about how close you are to the central office
>>
If you have Cox available they have the best internet. Who ever disagrees with this has shitty gear or don't know how to set up
>>
>>52429966
>gigabit fibre
>50 down 30 up
oh new zealand

better than 4 down 0.3 up I was getting with dsl
>>
>>52429448
The new Docsis 3.1 spec can theoreticaly hit 10Gig down and 1 Gig up.
>>
>>52429585
Yeah, I live in phoenix and I get 40/10 from centurylink for 40 a month. They havent complained about constant torrenting either.
>>
I live in Frankfurt, Germany, and got 200/50 with cable for 20€. It is ok. But the router which came with it was shit so I bought a new one.

Fiber to the home.

But seriously, on the same speeds and bandwidth allocation DSL is better because cable is a shared medium with all your neighbors.

Of course there is always the possibility that you live really far from the Central Office or node, which can make DSL blow.

Alternatively, if you live in a college neighborhood and everyone has Netflix, Cable will suck.

Cable speeds usually surpass the offerings of DSL, at least where I live, so cable is usually better. Though I now have fiber to the home. In all circumstances go with that.

I'm sorry was there even a question in there?
DSL is basically a modified dial up connection (analog)
where as cable is inherently digital these days
both in practice and in theory cable will destroy DSL in speeds and reliability across the board
only possible exception is if you're in BFE where you don't really get cable to begin with where they probably have a satellite connection instead, if you're that guy you're screwed no matter what, just use your mobile data and get on an infinite plan

I just moved from a place that had ADSL2 (4Mbps) to a house with cable (pic related).
It feels so fucking good, however the upload is still shit because I'm in Australia and people only care about download speeds.
>>
>>52430870
fucking Telstra. God dammit Aussies.

But I mean, typically I only see upload speeds of 5mbits. I also work for a service provider and typically see people only using 1mbit up for every 30 they do down.
>>
>>52429448
dsl is objectively better quality but cable has faster speeds

both are obsolete get fiber

Holy crap, is that the upload offered with 100Mbps?

One of the main points of NBN originally was the good upload offered by fibre to the premises so anyone could do business online, making the nation richer.

I'm on 25/5 with iinet and this is at 7:30pm, one of the most congested times.
>>
>>52433531
Nah, it's just premium cable.

NBN is still only like 7Mb/s up though, what a joke.
>>
In my rural area, my only option is ADSL1. ~4Mbit down, 0.4 up- and with the ridiculous length of my phone line (4km), I'm lucky I get that. Often I gripe about it and wish for FTTH rollouts and so on, but realistically no-one gives a shit about rural dwellers and nor should they.
>>
>>52429448
VDSL2. Theoretical throughput of DOCSIS is higher but it's much more susceptible to problems, mostly related to hardware on the networking side. Besides cable lines are shared. Your bandwidth depends on the other subscribers in the same line and their usage. Latency also tends to be higher with DOCSIS.

I still have no idea what cable is to be honest, i think it's used for tv in america and i see speed tests with decent bandwidth but horrifying ping which is weird but i don't actually know how it differs from copper or fiber
>>
>>52430615
all providers offer static IP with cable...
>>
>>52430870
Not mention Telsta's NBN is completely shit if you have the wireless bundle.
>>
Depends on by what you class as "better".
If we are talking speeds then which I assume you are then Cable shits all over DSL especially with DOCSIS 3.1 able to do 10Gb/s down and 1Gb/s up
>>
>>52429930
Are you implying it's not?
>>
>>52430863
You're retarded and shouldn't be allowed to talk. DSL stands for DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE. It's pushing a very high frequency digital signal over copper. Fuck, why are there so many tards on here?
>>
Just write a letter, no need to do anything fancy. Want Chinese cartoons? Send a letter searching for free Chinese cartoons to Google

Uverse gigabit service, fiber too house, 900+ down 800+ up pretty much always. Houston Tx.
>>
Depends on your neighborhood. I live in a massive apartment complex with neighboring apartments too. Probably 700-1000 units in a 1/2 mile radius.
If each one of those was on time warner cable, the 300 mb/s they offer wouldn't be anywhere close to that. But I have uverse, and its fiber to the curb so I don't share bandwidth with anyone and get a consistent 20 mb/s. Sucks that those are the only available options for me, San Antonio sucks. Monopolies or duopolies on every utility service here.
>>
>>52440083
I meant ftth not fttc
>>
>>52440083
>Fiber
>20mbps

god I hope you at least mean MB or else you've been cucked big time, son.
>>
>>52440229
Uverse is 99% FTTN (Fiber to the node) not FTTH (Fiber to the home)
>>
>>52429448
Had CenturyLink for a while 40/5 but then started sharing my wifi with people when they came by so my downloads skyrocketed to 2.5-3tb a month for about 3 months straight and I got a notice 2 times and the 3rd time was account disabled permanently, btw never got piracy notice just using what I paid for too much.
Now with COX like I was before but costs a little bit more 300/30 $99/m flat. very very happy atm and not struggeling when rest of house fags what to listen/watch their shit.
Had problems with DSL at first but was solid overall if you have old lines that can't be replaced good luck having a stable DSL service without paying up the ass for a 3rd party to dig up the shit lines to get replaced, was paying $40 with CL till loyatel program ended so I jumped ship since their 60/20 upgrade was going to cost $90 in total and still with 250gb cap. <cox cable internet $99 2tb "unenforced cap"
>>
France, got optical fiber today, I have a solid stable 107/74 for 23€/mo.
>>
>>5243372>>52433727
Do you live in the same WAN than the server ?
>>
>>52433531
Yeah i have 110mbps download and 2.5mbps upload lmao
>>
>>52443222
Oh nice i got trips
>>
DSL is a fucking joke compared to fiber optic cable

But I do have fond memories of DSL.

>going from dial up to dsl and attaining speed up to 300-600 kb/s
wew
And now people expect to get 100 - 400 mb/s over a fucking wireless router on their shitty laptop in my area.

Man.
Times sure do change
>>
>>52429448
>mfw americans still use DSL and cable

When are you niggers joining the FTTH Master race (Fibre To The Home / Fibre To The Building / Fibre to the Premises).

newer versions of DSL are decent, distance to the node is still important though. cable is potentially better if the signals aren't fucked.
>>52429585
it's not comcast can't give you more, it's not financially in their interest to do so.
