Hey guys I have Comcast and I ended up buying this router but I need a modem to go with it. Right now I'm paying 10 bucks a month for the Comcast one. I bought a Motorola sb6120 but Comcast told me they just stopped supporting it. Looking to get a new one I guess. Any thoughts?

This meme again.
Just get a docsis 3.0 modem.
This is my personal choice.

>>
>>52425885
What do you mean this meme? Im not familiar with what u mean
>>
>>52425983
>>
I wonder why they stopped supporting one of the best brand of modems.
>>
>>52426357
The one i bought is one of the best?
>>
>>52426446
surfboards used to be considered the best

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25223986-Connectivity-SB6120-and-Comcast-Connection-Problem

looks like it's comcast being shit as usual

1.upgrade modem firmware
2.get a tech to check signal strength
>>
>>52426772
Wait I can actually get the modem I have to work? Even though the guy said he cant connect it because its now obsolete to comcast??
>>
>>52426772
>>52427062
Like the guy who was installing our cable was trying to hook up the modem that I linked above..
>>52425188
And he had to call someone and the person told him that they just recently stopped supporting it so it wouldnt work when plugged in. So I had to rent theres for 10 bucks a month.
>>
>>52427062
next time you call ask to get elevated in support.

it's DOCIS 3.0. it shouldn't be obsolete as far as I know
>>
>>52427096
like sent to a manager?
>>
>>52427102
yea
>>
>>52427096
That doesn't work. They can only add what's on the list of modems. The 6120 is shit and outdated cause it's only 4 channel docsis 3.0.
>>
http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/device.php?devid=359
>>
>>52427146
That's nice, I have a friend that works at comcast and he says it's not on the list. If it's not on the list not even a manager is going to go around that.
>>
>>52427164
ok well they should update both lists
>>
>>52427192
The problem is, it does still work on comcast if you have it added when it was previously there. But if you are just getting it added then they can't do it. Now days it has to be docsis 3 and more than 4 channels for downstream.
>>
Just put the one your renting into bridged mode for the time being until you find a good one they support
>>
>>52427218
do you mean docis 3.1 or just 4channels? seems like an extortion scheme to make them money on rentals to me.
>>
>>52427236
Docsis 3 or higher and has to be one of those 8 channel modems or higher. It's not a scam because having more channels allows them to stream data back and for to you across 8 channels instead of just 4. Less lag and stuff. They even have 16 channel modems now and comcast uses all of them.
>>
>>52427282
Well if they can be used if they're grandfathered in but prevent new ones from registering it seems a little fishy. Anyways I'm not even OP but you're very helpful and informative.
>>
>>52427282
So youre saying the one OP bought wont work no matter who he calls?
>>
>>52427349
try bribing a tech see what happens :)
>>
>>52427349
That is correct. They have some list that coded in their system. So if it's not on there then no one will add it. You just get the copy paste sorry your modem is compatible.
>>
>>52427364
Ah I see, well do you have any advice on something that would be compatible that wont break my bank? I sent 50 bucks for that modem from ebay and the guy had no returns
>>
>>52427364
Sorry I meant incompatible.

Once it's taken off the system no one will touch it if someone wants it added on.

If a modem as an EOL status put on it, they will refuse to put it on, same with D2.0 modems. Same thing with customer owned EMTA's, except I think only one model is only supported nowadays.
>>
>>52427380
The SB6141 is the next one up.
>>
>>52427380
SB6141 or the Zoom 5341
I personally have the 6141 and never had problems with it.
>>
>>52427089
>And he had to call someone and the person told him that they just recently stopped supporting it so it wouldnt work when plugged in.

Here's something I found with some basic research skills. Front page amazon review

http://www.amazon.com/review/R25X3HG9JHTCNV/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004XC6GJ0&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=541966&store=pc
>>
>>52427146
>>52427388
Not him buy in your link here it says no to eol.
>>
>>52427431
He clearly didn't read because it's not identical to the SB6141. The 6141 has 8 channels, the 6121 has 4.
>>
>>52427399
Damn 80 fuckin bucks
>>
>>52427419
Well the 6141 is 80 bucks and the zoom is like 50. but I guess yer paying for the brand name
>>
>>52427476
At $10 per month that modem will pay for itself after eight months.
>>
The zoom one isn't bad either.
>>
>>52427534
it could break though

be a smart consumer and rent the modem OP

you won't regret it
>>
>>52427565
That's true, I rent myself cause if it breaks I just swap it at a comcast payment center.
>>
>>52427565
Only a complete piece of shit would break after only eight months.
>>
>>52427431
>2012
Well you realize in 2016 things might have an eol by now right?
>>
>>52427558
That wasnt on the list of working modems though. For comcast atleast
>>
>>52427565
>smart
>waste ten bucks per moth
Pick one.
>>
>>52427810
Help the OP then, im out of ideas
>>
>>52428071
i did
>>
>>52428071
>SB6141
OP should buy the SB6141 and be done with it. If OP is paying for; or plans to pay for, 100Mbps+ service within the next year or two then he should consider the SB6183.
>>
>>52428361
OP here, I am at 50mbps, so what do you think?
>>
>>52427505
The zoom is shit.
>>
>>52428398
Just get the 6141. It's a solid modem. Btw your modem is technically EOL and it's not on the list. The modem is assigned it's boot file that way. So it can be added, but under a different name on the list with a fucked boot file.
>>
>>52428731
Any idea where to getit for less than 80 bucks?
>>
>>52428980
Not really. Just do some googlefu.
>>
>>52429020
Thanks man, but forsure that modem will worth right? Id hate to get a new one and it not work

I'm just wondering if there's a reason

The modem says it supports to 350mbps

note I am on comcast/xfinity. the modem has their fucking logo on it.

God damnit Andrew. It just doesn't do internet. Is that so hard to understand? Replace the modem with our special offer: 50mbps blazing fast internet for only $299 before taxes. Our technician is glad to come to your house and install it for you so you can internet all day long.

I have the 250mbps for $110/mo package... prior to that I was paying $79 for 110mbps.

never had better than 40mbps.

just installed (and self-activated) my old CMD31T because fuck comcast. I'm returning the new one. ordered a TPLink
...

watch them tell me it isn't supported either (even though it's on their fucking list).

"Andrew" here

excuses they have given me:

- the speed "takes a while" to start working
- my modem is broken
- my router is broken
- my ethernet cables are worn out
- my ethernet cables aren't plugged-in all the way
- my operating system needs to be reinstalled
- my XFinity modem doesn't work on XFinity internet
- Comcast doesn't support Linux
- the wiring in my house is faulty (note: comcast installed it)

I've also been given mixed information

- my area doesn't offer 250mbps (after I already paid him for it -- THE SAME AGENT said this to me)
- my modem isn't supported (it says XFINITY on it and is listed as supported)
- my modem is supported by my modem isn't supported
- I don't have the 250mbps speed on my account (but I'm receiving a bill for it??)

fucking comcast is a joke.

picture: the stats from my "unsupported" modem they sent me to buy.
>>
>>52430752
You can try to hard reset it. Then call in to reactivate it. Might have take some shit firmware sent to it.
>>
>>52433673
Bruh your downstream levels are too high. Pad that shit with a 2 way splitter.
>>
>>52433722

would this cause my downstream bandwidth to be shit??
>>
>>52433771
Yea it can. The threshold for modems are roughly 10dbmv to -8dbmv.

also nice dubs

PS sorry I am retarded when it comes to cable internet. I know tons of shit when it comes to everything else network.

they told me a hotter signal would be fine and it's a weak one you have to worry about...

I also have a shitload of cable wrapped up outside the house before it comes in... but I don't think that would do it?

well fuck

oh well

I already ordered the TP-Link modem and it's due to be delivered Saturday morning

for now I'll crawl under the house and get rid of the coil of wire and see if that helps.

even on my CMD31T I'm getting 40... it should get at least 150.
>>
>>52433831
That extra cable shouldn't be a big deal. It's already helping to pad your already high downstream.
>>
>>52433042
kek
>>
>>52425093

Make sure the modem you buy is docsis 3.0 or comcast will inject ads into your browser

I have a modem from my cable company from about 6 years ago, if I were to upgrade would I see a significant increase in my download and upload speed? I am get about 25 megabytes on my 5ghz connection but the 2.4 ghz connection is pitiful at like 3 mbps
>>
Tell me more.
>>
>>52436785
threads done quit
>>
>>52436520

most cable companies have upgraded to docsis 3.0 and have upgraded speeds for free

your best bet is a 16x4 modem like sb6183 or cm500 and pretty much any ac wifi router
>>
>>52430752

cm400 only has 8x4 channel bonding

you need a 16x4 modem like cm500 to get full speeds most likely.. just read your isp requirements
