I usually just look at what the top few free options are on AV-test and grab the one that looks the best to me every 6 months or so. Never saw much reason to pay for something that might be shit by the time my license ends.

AVG and Avast are both pretty decent free options. I like AVG a bit better for being a bit less pushy about trying to market other bullshit on you, not sure which has better detection lately though.

Umatrix is amazing.
I've been amazed at how much shit I've blocked with it.
I'm kind of retarded about all that shit, but even I can selectively enable/disable things one at a time until I find the script/plugin/whatever I need to enable to make shit work right while keeping all the others out.
It's usually pretty easy and straightforward to figure out what is what anyway.
