The trouble is everyone has a PC and 95% of users won't notice any difference between a PC from 2011 and a new upgrade.

And what advances are on the market just aren't that compelling. I run linux at home but I need to get something Windows for work. As much as I love the look of the Surface Book, how can I justify paying literally 10x the price of a used T420? I can draw on paper for that money.

It wasn't just the price decreasing every year that drove upgrades but the value increasing. Now it's hard to see the value in buying the latest hardware.

Everyone here builds their own.
Also, PC hardware is a lot better than it used to be. PCs can last 10+ years now, running well on the latest OS and basic software this was unthinkable even as late as 2000. Dad has a PC from 2006 and it's still fine.

His laptop from 2012 however is a piece of fucking shit. I hate laptops so fucking much.

Everyone here is forgetting a huge point: a huge amount of people literally use their phone and tablet as their primary computer. Sounds fucking stupid but it's true. Some people have no laptop or desktop at all and do all their computing via a phone or tablet. With web based applications getting better and better and mobile apps doing the same there's less of a reason for a lot of people.
