The containment thread for dumb questions undeserving of their own thread.

Don't bump your question, it will get answered in time. If not, try again in the next thread.

Been a while since I've made one of these, but the old one is dying.

Previous thread: >>52389504

How can we make it legal to shoot database developers that put a delineated list within a cell?
>>
>>52398571
Been in the last 3 threads, and have been searching online since then, still nothing.

Every time I mount a drive in linux with the mount command, it is mounted as read-only and is write-protected. I can't change permissions because that is a form of writing, and remounting it as read-write doesn't work. The drives are fine, fsck does nothing, and /etc/fstab is set up correctly.

I just don't know.

Just built a new pc and it runs great, no problem.

When I shut it down it logs off windows 10, screen goes blank as expected but pc continues to run for an additional 45 seconds before it eventually powers off.
Have noticed that the keyboard and mouse (all usb devices) remain powered up too until just before the pc powers off.

Not a huge problem but curious to know whats causing the pc to hang before it eventually powers down

>>

That means there's a problem specifically with the current computer, either hardware or software. Have you tried to connect it to another S-ATA port just to check whether that's an issue?
>>
>>52399222
I've pretty much everything on the hardware side.

Keep in mind that this affects usbs, CDs, external hard drives, and internal hard drives.

Pretty sure it's a software problem.

Update: hdparm does nothing.
/dev/sdf:
setting readonly to 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)

mount: cannot remount /dev/sdf1 read-write, is write-protected

I want to make a script in python that would imitate matlab's clear all command.
I.e. when I call the clear_all() function in python, I want it to delete all currently assigned variables from the memory.
I need this because when I'm running some small scripts, variables defined in one script stay over when I run the next script, and bugs my creep in this way.
I tried the following piece of code I found online:

def clear_all():
gl = globals().copy()
for var in gl:
if var[0] == '_': continue
if 'func' in str(globals()[var]): continue
if 'module' in str(globals()[var]): continue

del globals()[var]

But doesn't seem to work, nothings happening.
What is globals().copy() supposed to do? Whenever I run it I get nothing, the error could be there.
Or I'm misinterprenting something here a lot, I'm new to python.

Okay, I've gotten _somewhere_

Under /etc/mtab the drives are listed as ro.

Does this mean there is some miscommunication when /etc/mtab is created? The drives are clearly marked to be mounted as rw in /etc/fstab

/dev/sdf1 /media/external ntfs ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=0,gid=0,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1 0 0

Raspi can do it
OrangePi can too
Raspi Zero will too, if its nothing too heavy, you can daisy chain usb hubs and use a usb RJ-45 adapter.
Or if you're adventurous, buy a cheap 40$ phone that can be rooted, install a debian chroot on it, and use it as a server. I did that, and it works pretty much fine

What methods can I use to isolate my browser from the rest of my system?

Currently running it under a different user, which prevents direct access to my main user's files, but it still has unbridled access to the xorg session.

Should I run a seperate xsession? Or is there some way I can embed xsessions within each other?

What's the best free software to verify the integrity of an usb stick and the real storage capacity?

I found this decade old 8GB kingston in a drawer and it seems to be still alive, it's slow as hell though and when I try to write big files in it they sometimes disappear, I think it might be a chinese bloated fake, the capacity is probably much lower than 8GB.

To be honest I've no idea why, though I found this with google:
http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-dvi-i-and-dvi-d/

>Summary:
>1. DVI-D is a DVI connector that is meant for digital signals only while DVI-I is a connector that allows both digital and analog signals
>2. DVI-I connectors have all the necessary pins for a single link DVI cable while DVI-D connectors lack the four pins that is supposed to carry the analog signal
>3. The long and flat pin on the DVI-D connector is slightly smaller than that on the DVI-I connector
>4. A DVI-D connector can fit on a DVI-I port but not the other way around.

DVI is deprecated anyway.

Nearly the same thing has been happening to me ever morning for the past few days. I will be using my desktop perfectly fine at night but when I turn it on in the morning it acts really weird. If you can see wireless networks and you try to connect but it fails then there should be an entry in event viewer with an error code at least.

What do you mean no errors? There are ~10 services that need to run in order to have working network in most cases. Have you checked they're running?

That is part of the issue.
Windows itself cannot see any wifi networks, another application (InSSIDer) however can use the adapter to view networks.

I'm weeding through the event logs right now and can see NetworkUXBroker returned quite a few errors.

What about wlanautoconfig? Can't remember the exact names but network related events can be quite spread out depending on what fails.

The fact you can see networks using a different too almost definitely points to some service related issues and windows being windows.

SFC /scannow might be an option too if there is some corruption.

Also are those wlan drivers windows 10 compatible?

For some reason my shitty toshiba laptop has decided to alter it's resolution and aspect ratio. It's meant to be 1366 x 768, but for some reason it's set itself to 1280 x 800. It's a problem with the hardware, as it's in both my linux and windows partition as well as the BIOS. The BIOS doesn't even have any options for the display.

I tried reflashing the BIOS, clearing the CMOS and setting it to default settings, none worked. I also tried to force it into 1366 x 768 using xrandr but it kept giving me an error.

Just check around for cheapo cases.
Look for something that is 'blocky'.

Dust: Add dust filters to vents or, use water cooling with external radiator.
Water: Any normal ATX case is protected from objects... I think.
Water: Well, depends on what kind. You could just move the PSU to the center-ish of your case, so water can't go in it if someone splashes some on the sides...

It's not an easy project to do a 100% protected pc.

I recently built a new computer. Decided to get a 120gb ssd to install Windows 7 on and 1tb WD mechanical hard drive to store data.

I wanted to move stuff from my old computers 1tb drive to the new computer. I tried Windows Easy transfer, but the old drive is the c; drive and it wants to put all the data on to the SSD, since its the one with Windows installed. So I cant use that.

I dont think cloning the drive is gonna work either since the parts are new.

Anyone have an alternative to Windows Easy Transfer or cloning, to get most of the stuff from an old drive on to a new computer? Preferably free?

As a follow up, should I just install windows on to my mechanical drive as well? I was hoping not to since the SSD would take care of it but now I dont know.

>Proper partition alignment is essential for optimal performance and longevity. This is due to the block nature of every I/O operation on the hardware level as well as file system level. The key to alignment is partitioning to (at least) the given block size, which depends on the used hardware. If the partitions are not aligned to begin at multiples of the block size, aligning the file system is a pointless exercise because everything is skewed by the start offset of the partition.

>Solid state drives are based on flash memory, and thus differ significantly from hard drives. While reading remains possible in a random access fashion, erasure (hence rewriting and random writing) is possible only by whole blocks. Additionally, the erase block size (EBS) are significantly greater than regular block size, for example 128KiB vs. 4KiB, so it is necessary to align to multiples of EBS.
>>
>>52407071
Here's the real answer.

It's possible to completely seal the case, but that's actually a terrible solution to the problem because it's harder to access the components for maintenance and environmental conditions variations can create huge pressure differentials which can damage your seals and/or case due to the pressure or vacuum.

The system must be open in order to allow pressure equalization. This is the case with current PC cases already: they have little slits and holes through which air can flow. The actual solution for desktop computers is to have fully filtered ventilation with strong intake fans and no outtake fans.

This setup generate positive pressure inside the case. Because it is an open system, the pressure will not damage the case; the air inside the case will escape through all the openings. What was previously a way that dust could enter the case is now the very mechanism which is sealing it against the dust. The outwards air flow effectively seals all the openings against any dust traveling inwards.

The problem has now been reduced to ensuring the cleanliness of the air brought into the case by the intake fans. I have seen people use all kinds of filters for this, even microbe-proof HEPA filters. I've also heard of ePTFE vents which are liquid proof as well but I'm not up to date on the details of this and I'm not sure whether this would be useful; you'd have to shield all the openings in order to make the entire case waterproof, but the point of this setup is to seal those openings automatically without requiring us to even know of their existence.

>Platter to platter is fine to clone, there will be no issue with it.Drivers dont mean shit here.

But the old 1tb drive is the primary windows c drive of the old computer.

There wont be any issue with the ssd running windows as the primary c drive too?
Thats the only reason I wasnt considering direct cloning as an option. I'd basically have 2 drives running windows at the same time. Would I need to switch between them or could it handle having that?
>>
>>52407469
YOU STILL WRITE TO A FUCKING SSD YOU AUSTISTIC JEWISH SPERG
YOU MINIMALISM WRITING TO THEM THEM

just to clarify I have an Intel 120, Intel 80, Samsung 120 SSD up and running, all cloned and happy.
And a 2x240gb RAID0 array of Kingston SSDs, cloned, again.

The Intel 80 has been up and running top-notch for like 3-4 years?
The 120 is around 2-3 years old?
The RAID0 is also a bit older, I am posting from it right now.

Again, all drives bring benchmark speeds, have 100% health left in tools.

I'm done with your retardation.
Fucking install windows on your ssd
Dont be a lazy fuck and DRAG AND DROP all your fucking data to your platter. copy your fucking windows profile(name your fucking user the same thing) then copy it over to your ssd
If you cannot comprehend that, then fuck off

The shit I have is experience.
Several drives, same process, all 100% state.

> muh SMART
The only thing that shows data about SSDs.

By user experience all drives perform top-notch, no errors, no failures, nothing.
And file based tests bring the speeds.

What else there is to prove?

Never heard this bullshit before anywhere.
Not even on /g/, and that's something.

Well, thats what I was hoping to avoid, but if there REALLY is no easier way, I'll do it.

Im downloading the Acronis though, see if that can work.
If not, I'll just copy/paste all the stuff manually.

THE FUCK

I fucking hate twc and their bullshit. Has anyone had any experience with time Warner, specifically their fucking garbage arris modem?

Is there a reason why when I turn off wifi or disable ip routing, the connection becomes stable? Leaving wifi on becomes a nightmare and I have no idea what to do.

I should have bought my own modem right

Well i gave you a list fo things i already had, and I wanted to know what suggestions you might have. I know what actual applications I need for my university work and stuff, but i meant as in cool, niche little apps and such that might be nice to have.

Im about to go to /w/ and /wg/ to see what they have but I thought /g/ might have some ideas.

Educate me about something. When the drive/SSD/RAM/cache/memory device starts experiencing I/O errors, what does it do?

I mean, what happens? Does it correct the errors somehow? Does it alert the user? What should the user do about it

Do you know of a great VDSL2 router? My fucking ISP is using this for whatever reason and regular DSL routers don't seem to work. The one they gave me is garbage, I would also really like one with the aftermarket firmwares available
>>
>>52407757

The choices given are:

A.It is missing the following statement at the end of the code: break;
B.If you have multiple lines of code after an if statement, you must create a code block using curly braces { }
C.It is missing an end if statement
D.It is missing an else if statement

Otherwise I would have. I do have an external 1tb harddrive that could hold it
