How the fuck is this possible when I pay for 60mbps internet?

>straight from the modem is about 20-25 mbps
>wifi is this

Should I call charter and bitch, or is it really this shitty?
>>
That speed is not a garantee. Also, wifi sucks for fast and stable connections. Learn to read contracts before you sign them and use a cable for fast connections.

Check phone line or coax.

Mostly those cables are causing problems.

There is a loss of around 65% of bandwidth with wifi, the current technology doesnt allow more

Stop using a shitty router.
>>
>>52381841
Is it because you're too far from the amplifier ?
Is attenuation messing up with the speed ?
Do you have a VDSL plan ?
>>
>>52381841
>>straight from the modem is about 20-25 mbps
Try http://speedtest.charter.com/
If that gives you the same results then you have grounds for complaint. If not then you do not.

WiFi being terrible is not unexpected, that's why you should never use it if you have the option of using a cat6/5e/5 cable. Only idiots take the advertised WiFi at face value because they come with the usual caveat of "up to, when the router is beside the device, there's nothing else using the same frequency and the planets have aligned in alphabetical order"
>>
>>52382238
I have a fucking Netgear N900 dual band router
>>
>>52382282
The amplifier is in my room
>>
>>52382340
Thats what I meant by "straight from the modem"

Speedtest straight from the modem is around 25-30 mbps
>>
>>52382375
Again, try the official speed test from your ISP. Speedtest.net may not have a server close enough to you or the may be giving you a dodgy server. You could also try going back to speedtest.net and trying a few different servers to see if the results vary.

Question:

Do unmanaged switches behind the router help? Does disabling router wifi when its not in use speed up wired transfer throughput?

If I have two devices doing a file transfer, each connected to a different unmanaged switch box, and those boxes connected to my router, do those switch boxes save my router any energy? Better potential throughput?

Also is it better to have a hard ware firewall upstream of the outer, between it and the modem, and disabling the routers firewall? Further saving it energy, so it can focus on routing.

Do you have tv service through charter? Might be a bad spliiter. Could also be that the modem is going bad. Make sure you have a home run from the service line to the modem.

Yes you need to call and bitch, they'll send a tech out to clean it up. If that doesn't work then your neighborhood might be over provisioned.
>>
Anyone use a NON-ISP DNS? I consider google but worry about botnet. Or do some people use multiple DNS? Or rotate their DNS use? On one hand it splits your info up, on the other, you are that much more exposed to info collection
>>
>>52382632
I doubt it's the router because I have the same one and pull 80ish straight from the router. WiFi is like 15-25
>>
>>52382684
Have you checked wifi up close to the router? Really with 2.4ghz I would not expect anything better than 50Mb/s, usually 20-30 at distance depends on interference.

So this is just a wifi issue, wired is fine?

Is your home filled with concrete, brick, or other metallic objects especially around the modem? Is your service connected via coax or cat 5, or god help you shitty ewire? If you're getting not even half of what you order, at least in california with att they have to fix it. Good rule of thumb though is to call and make sure they arent sending slower speeds from their office. If a technician noticed you had shitty wire thyley might have lowered your speeds since your shit cant reliably carry anything faster. Lots of factors op.

Bumping these questions not OP
>>
>>52381841
You also need to make sure that you have a docsis 3.0 modem. I had to change out an old modem bcak when I upgraded above 20Mbps. All of the other replies thus far are very valid. Even check the cable ends and the cables themselves to make sure they arent damaged or kinked, as that can cause a drop in signal. Have the tech check the cable tips and the cable drop outside for damage from weed eaters etc. I should mention that I used to work for TWC as an insatller.

Every spliter and amplifier will reduce your forward and reverse signal some. You should NEVER have more than 2 two way spliters or one three way spliter between the modem and the tap outside. Signal amplifiers raise all of the signals even the noise floor which can be terrible for your internet speeds. Signal amps also cut the return signal as they only amplify in the inbound direction this can cause issues as well.
There are tons of possiblities.

I pay for 30 and 5 Mbps and this is what I get. All hand made cables short cat6 to and from the router.
>>
>>52381841
Call charter for good measure. Usually give you a faster plan for a month, maybe some free channels, or some other nice thing. Not like you're doing anything more productive while waiting for people to reply to you on gee
>>
>>52381952
This is is wrong... so wrong.

I use wireless AC for my 50 mbits down 4 up connection and I get the full bandwidth even with 50% signal strength.
>>
>>52382580
I live in rural North Carolina and get 108 Mbps down and 5 up....

Thats plenty fast and certainly more than most.

Does cost $149.99 a month. unlimited though.
>>
"Up to", my good, good goy ;) Now pay up, because you don't want to know what "up to 30mbps" means, heh heh heh...
>>
>>52381841
For OP

Check your speed by plugging directly into the router. If the speed is good, then get a new router. If the speed doesn't improve, call them and bitch them out. Usually ISPs throttle your connection speed during "off times" when they think you wouldn't be home in order to save operating costs.
>>
>>52382683
Your ISP can still log all your requests.
>>
>live in ROMANIA

>Worried about info being collected
Look, you are in the system. We all are no matter where you live. If you have ever put information into a system, had a bank account, used a debit card, signed up for internet with your name at the ISP, applied for a job, rented an apartment, taken a loan, visited 4chan, walked into a store with cameras and internet. You are in the system there is nothing you can do. But here is the thing, you aren't special they dont care about you individually unless they need to. Have a brain cover yourself and stay legal as best as possible. They arent coming for you.

Get it together and move. This is what I get for $65 from TWC after moving away from a Comcast monopoly area that offered me 50/5 for the same price.
>>
Are you on Cable or VDSL?
>>
>>52384196
I only get 5 up on my 108 mbps down connection.

Why are ISP so jewish with upload bandwidth? Do they not want us running servers?

My 5 mbps is enough for me but I could use a lot more....
>>
>>52384047
True. But other dns servers are quicker.

I guess its either google dns for speed, or vpn and you use their dns, and your isp cant log them then
>>

Yeah I get 100 down, 10 up, 15 up would be real nice tbqh. Absolutely great HD from home stream that way.
>>
>>52384362
>so we only have 12 over a fucking phone line

How can you bitch about 12 mbps? That plenty fast for any kind of use short of streaming 4K....

I had 768k down in 2004 then 1.5 mbps then 3 mbps till 2014. Then I moved and got 108 mbps and I dont really use more than a few mbps unless im downloading.

3 mbps is enough for anything as long as you dont rape it with downloads.
>>
>>52384422
Depends if you are alone, and some 1080p wont work well unless good size buffering.
>>
>>52384422
Dude, we have 12 mega BIT down. That means I have 1.5 megabytes down as we speak. 250 kilobytes up.
>>
>>52384489
YES, I know. thats what I was saying.

mbps = mega bit per second.

3 is FINE. Dont bitch about 12.
>>
>>52384513
You don't know what you're talking about. There's no way the speeds at your old home were measured in bits. I refuse to believe that.
>>
>>52384085
Holy shit even the fucking roms have better internet lmao
>>
>>52384574
maybe he meant 3 is fine if you are the only single user on that line,
if you are living with your family 20Mbps could not be enough...
thanks god for upc and their cheap connection, currently rocking 150/10 for around 19euros/month
>>52385076
in Romania, they got the best connection possible, coz of all that cyber crime in there and so on, google hackerville
>>
>triggered

I work for a major ISP and used to work in the broadband department.

"Slow speed" issues were the worst calls. I hated explaining that wireless connections are usually pretty poor.

Also, we only guaranteed 65% of advertised rates.

>tfw I normally just turned the wifi on their modem/router off and then on again
>tfw that pleased most people
>tfw I disabled wifi on modem or changed SSID to 'rude' and hung up on customers if they were rude

Not gonna lie, America is pretty third-world tier when it comes to ISPs. Even though this is good enough for the what I use it for (Browsing, vidya, and streaming) I had similar speeds when I was on vacation in Nicaragua.

>>
>>52384574
How young are you? Jesus dude.

3 mega bits per second is still the standard for DSL in Western, NC.

If you are lucky you might get cable which supports up to 108 mbps here.

But yes, 3 mega BITS per second is VERY normal for copper DSL lines.
>>
>>52385337
You can actually sue those companies if they advertise having broadband. Last year the FCC redefined broadband to 25mbps down, 3 up.
Also, that other anon is an idiot. mbps is megabits per second, MB/s is megabytes per second.
>>
>>52385094
I thought it was because gypsies kept stealing all the copper wiring?
>>
>>52385304
Nah. Live in a small town that they had to lay cables through to get to the largest city in the state. I'm not sure if they're just not monitoring our town or what, because everyone here gets way faster speeds than we pay for.
>>
>>52385379
Heh, so thats why my cable ISP made a new "tier" that was 25 down 3 up which replaced their 20 down 2 up tier.
>>

I live In Lithuania which is one of the fastest internet. Inb4 I'm using 4mbps plan and I get mostly 1mb download speed and 67kbps upload speed. I pay 15 euros for this. People in cities can buy like 100 Mbps speed internet for the same price. On the phone I can access only Edge speed. My phone companies offers 30gb per month plans for 15 eur. Sure I get in city better internet but I'm living like 5 km away from city and my school is 3 km away too and can't even get better internet than edge help me poiple
>>
>>52385450
Dude you live in a third world county. Outside of large cities I would expect internet to be sparse or non existent other than maybe dialup.

Lots of people in the USA get only 3mbps from DSL since thats all thats available sometimes.

Just live with it man or if you are rich get a laggy high bandwidth satellite connection.
>>
>>52385573
we have one of the fastest Internets in city. But yeah. Just wondering why I can have max 1 download speed if I pay for 4mbps? I don't understand ISP pricing. I am using thought phone cable too
