Is Windows 7 going to go the way of Windows XP? I really don't want the new bullshit in Windows 10 and my laptop has a discrete GPU that Linux can't detect.

KB3075249 – adds yet more telemetry, This update adds telemetry points to the User Account Control (UAC) feature to collect information on elevations that come from low integrity levels.
KB3075851 – makes “improvements” to the windows update client (really just more Win10 bullshit)
KB3080149 – adds yet more telemetry, The diagnostics tracking service collects diagnostics about functional issues on Windows systems that participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). Where can I find up to date lists that include botnet upates disguised as important updates? I havent installed any important update for a month now since they tried to push their shit as a critical update.
Check the out yourself.
Security updates are mostly safe to install, as they just patches vulnerabilities.
In the bottom you'll find Windows X updates that contains new and fixes to features.
Screw optional updates, they are optional for a reason.
Windows 7 EOL is in 2020, if you don't like the way Windows is going there is no long term solution other than GNU/Linux.
Worst case scenario is that we arrive in 2020 without a critical mass of users and developers on Linux because then we're fucked.
They labeled the updates that add telemetry to track you as a security update. So your theory or whatever that is, is wrong its not safe to install all security updates or recommended updates.
According to Microsoft no. Windows 10 is a rolling release which they will continuously update and a normal user will have little to no ability to refuse an update that increases the prominence of ads, or that restricts allowed software sources by default.
The idea that there will be a new odd numbered version of Windows is a fantasy much like the fantasies of people in abusive relationships that they can change their partner. Its not going to get better.
Worry not, Metro is even worse than classic Windows interface, software devs will keep it classic for the next ten years or so, and after that we'll probably all migrate to Linux because of bloatware overkill on proprietary systems.
Well actually, since the dawn of this win 10 bollocks they've corrupted the upate service so it consumes upwards of 1GB ram which can suffocate a low RAM system that would otherwise function perfectly.
The entire svchost housing it will be overcome with greed and start stealing ram until you put it down like a sick dog.
I very recently installed a x64 windows 7 ultimate on a machine and within minutes of telling it to begin the update process the mad bastards infested the update service, even now with all the tweaks does it struggle to fight off the madness.
Or you could just disable the service.
Besides all you need to know for linux is "sudo apt-get install [name]" and how to run it.
Shame ubuntu distro I used few years ago forced you to run terminal instances alongside applications that were executed by it.
combine it with a terminal multiplexer like screen or tmux and you begin to understand why linux has really comfy (and useful) command line interface shit.
dual boot or something, you're missing out.
>Now let's suppose that you have a program that is hopelessly hung (Netscape, maybe) and you want to get rid of it. Here's what you do:
> Use the ps command to get the process id (PID) of the process you want to terminate.
> Issue a kill command for that PID.
> If the process refuses to terminate (i.e., it is ignoring the signal), send increasingly harsh signals until it does terminate.
Maybe one day, when I am comfortable enough to leave that ever increasingly getting colder windows carriage to explore new environments.
will they still push this win 10 update when its not free anymore. I feel like they will never stop.
It's free now, will be mandatory later.
Looks like the 2020 EOL date of Windows 7 is pure theory, as by that date any Win 7 install connected at all to the internet will be forcefully "upgraded"..
>by that date
Long before it, actually. Windows 10 will most likely be force-fed into all 7/8.1 installations still in this year, with no opt-out chance.
>They've already sunk to lies and deception
>any Win 7 install connected at all to the internet will be forcefully "upgraded"..
>Microsoft makes a free as in beer OS upgrade
>"Just the next step in an Orwellian utopia"
>"In the future using Windows 7 will be punishable by death"
Grow the fuck up. I get you don't like Windows 10, that's totally fine, but just disable GWX and move on with your life like a fucking adult. If you know Microsoft is evil, why would you use any of their products in the first place?
The update descriptions and names are literally lying now to conceal windows 10 shit, some of them will tell you to your face they are windows 10 related, others are tagged important and labeled as entirely unrelated to win10 shit. They do not have a track history of actively doing this besides the odd bout of incompetence.
Based on this, you know Microsoft is evil, so why are YOU using any of their products in the first place?
>my laptop has a discrete GPU that Linux can't detect.
Well damn. What's the model, OP?
Not him but pretty much anything with NVIDIA Optimus is hackjobbed in Linux.
Also, interestingly enough, the Bumblebee project actually pushed out a batch of code that deleted /usr because they added a space.
>start download, upgrade later
>START DOWNLOAD UPGRADE LATER
if this shit doesn't make you realize that it's time to switch the OS asap then nothing can help you, holy fucking shit.
yeah I stuck around but it looks like he doesn't want help
Well, OP, if you ever come back, try out the Architect installer. It has pretty god GPU detection and helps you install your GPU driver.
I doubt it. I think the only thing that will save reactos is forking to specifically ignore windows compatibility. At most it should be a feature clone but not a API one because as soon as it gets any popularity, Microsoft will shut it down.
>I mean one day I'll wake up and be greeted by a win 10 screen because the Pc upgraded on its own so what's the point
Give up because you're a tech illiterate. Meanwhile I'm sitting here with a hard drive loaded with Windows 7 isos from digital river and 8.1 from MS' own creation tools.
It's not hard to block shit updates.
>That's the refugees job.
I'm pretty sure not all of us have jobs yet though.
Nobody knows what the EULA says because nobody reads it.
But, apart from the upgrades it also says , in effect, all data on a Windows PC is available to Microsoft for whatever purpose.
Spend a quiet day filling in all the o's in the EULA if you can'r bring yourself to actually read it.
>your files will be right where you left them
Yeah, bullshit. W10 wiped my entire SSD when I installed it because of """"compatibility issues""""
What do you all think would have to happen for MS to retract all their tracking and spyware bullshit? COULD anything happen that is bad enough for them to consider it? I feel like even if people gain access through one of their spyware updates and creates massive crashes throughout their userbase, MS will just say "No, we're keeping the spyware. We'll just look for the hole and patch it."
>only pedos avoid spying
Boy, I sure want to use windows 10 now.
It would prove I'm not a pedo, not into anime, not a terrorist, don't have a neckbeard, don't spend all my time ricing, and am a productive person.
Golly gee, why wouldn't I sell my soul to M$ or Google. It's not like corporations would ever do anything unethical.
I installed windows 10 then completely disabled tracking.
Whats weird is Linux fan base gets so butt hurt over this statement. They cannot fathom that people on the Internet, including an anti spying company, would make custom software to fix these holes.
Or maybe Linux fans do know that is true, and that spying can be disabled, but they're working under the table to suppress Windows users from spreading the information that spying can be disabled.
Anyway, use Spybot Anti Beacon and Windows will no longer spy. You can also use disablewintracking to remove some bloat.
You shouldn't have to use third party software in the first place, the options to disable tracking should be right in there. But until you block everything related to microsoft at the router level you will still get tracked regardless of what you have turned off or not.
See what I mean? "no its impossible to disable tracking! You must be wrong." Linux fans just can't wrap their heads around it. I've checked router logs, and with these software patches on the OS there is no data sent to Ms.
But no, they don't believe me, because somehow I must be wrong. It's like a cultists who can't be convinced that their warped view of the world is factually incorrect.
What is all this but a fundamental trust in the experience of being watched? Our trust is so strong that it seems to have found its own protective rationality, deeply rooted in Western consciousness. It's an addict's rationality, by which we're unable to refrain from making public a stream of intimate details of our lives and those of children too young to consent. One must wonder about the subtle, unspoken fear of the consequences of refusing to participate in systems of surveillance, or even to critique them seriously. This would be to risk isolation. It would be a trifle paranoid to reveal less -- a little eccentric, not quite rational.
I don't think it's trust so much as laziness.
>fuck it, I'm going to do what's convenient.
It shows with the win10 nagging. People are lazy and "upgrade" because it's easer than fighting back.
Even if what you say is true, what about the next "security upgrade" where they hard code IP's?
