I tried using windows 98 a few months ago, after having not touched it for probably a decade.

The directory structure was very clean and simple. Not at all like these "modern" "multi-user" operating systems that shit random files in a thousand different places.

And unlike Windows 10, the UI is consistent.

I tried that too. The directory structure was way messier than 98.

Briefly using windows 98 made the desktop make sense to me for the first time in forever. It's presented as being the top level of the directory structure, with everything existing underneath it. Way more intuitive than multi-user systems that bury the desktop in the individual user directories.

I spy Unreal/UT hiding behind that speccy. How does it run? My ATI graphics are shit so I'm lucky to manage 320x240 with good fps.

Why would someone use XP for a computer on the internet?
I like XP and still use it on a couple computers, my home media box and the laptop dedicated to uC's, neither get connected to the internet.

I put a clean XP install on the wifes computer and within 30 days, it was slowed down to a crawl from, I'd imagine malware. She doesn't even use it much, and when she does it's mostly youtube.
Slapped a different drive in it and installed mint for her to try, and 30 days later she gave me the go ahead to wipe the XP drive.

Is it just nostalgia?

Well sort of, as that's the only reason to use a Pentium II. Good luck running Windows 7 on a Pentium II. Linux would do okay with a very lightweight DE.

Try disabling Dynamic Lighting, Volumetric Lighting, ShinySurfaces and HighDetailActors in UnrealTournament.ini, also use 16-bit colour and low or medium quality textures.

The Rage Mobility you are using has better speed on Windows9X than on NT, 2000 or XP. Use the M series driver for best performance on a Pentium II.
