4690k or 6600k?

6600K
>>
>Older or newer?
What a fucking stupid question
>>
>>52334181
5820k
>>
>>52334204
older but with cheaper mobo
>>
>>52334225
You can't OC with a cheap mobo and why would you buy a K CPU if you don't plan to OC?
>>
>>52334221
Broadwell-E is releasing Q1 2016.

>i7-6950X, 10-core, 20-threads
>>
>>52334181
But to answer the question, you're better off just going with an i5-6600K and a Z170 board if you haven't bought any parts. If you currently own the 4690K, it's probably not worth upgrading.
>>
>>52335791
Non-wccftech source?
>>
i5-6500 $180
ASrock Z170-Pro4s $80
CM 212 Evo $25

There's your $285 overclockable Skylake platform once you get the Sky OC bios. At one time it was a beta bios, but now with no fanfare ASrock simply released a regular non-beta bios update that supports BCLK OCing of locked Skylake CPUs. Best of both worlds and huge cost savings.

Well shit...
>>
>>52336074
If it's legitimate, I'll probably be buying the 10-core for myself.
>>
>>52336114
Oh I will too but I don't look forward to dropping another grand on this machine lol
>>
>>52336114
>spending $1500 on a deprecated platform
>not waiting for Skylake-E in six months

Great plan, senpai.
>>
>>52336142
>Already waiting just a month or a few months.

>It'll probably be more than six.

I just bought my board. The next CPU after Broadwell-E will likely be a different socket. I'll happily buy this one and keep it for at least a few years.

>>52336133
>Dropping another grand.
What are you running now? It might not be worth the upgrade.

I've finally decided to build my own rig. Shit might go terribly wrong but whatever. Any way I can make this a few hundred dollars cheaper (i need windows so cant change that and won't pirate it)

Needs: I'll be shitposting, researching and doing some InDesign and minor Photoshop work.

6600k on asus maximus 8 and 32gb
>>
>>52336281
Don't buy a bronze PSU
Get the 6600 non k not the 6500
And no GPU?
>>
>>52336318
Is your most intensive task gaming? You probably are better off sticking to what you have.
>>
>>52336376
I don't play video games or do much video editing, I was planning on seeing how far the iGPU would take me then upgrade.

What PSU would you recommend?
>>
>>52336422
Platinum edition ;) bronze is like putting shitty gas in your Ferrari.
>>
>>52336422
If you don't really game, an iGPU is likely all you need. Which you again are probably better off with mainstream i5's.
>>
>>52334181
2600k

>>52336257
690
>>

>Broadwell-E

you mean Skylake-E

There's no way in hell they're going to keep using the term "Broadwell" in 2017. It's a bad dream for intel.
>>
>>52334181
4790k
>>
Might as well sneak this question in here.

Whats the best Bloomfield/LGA 1366 processor? They're almost all realtively cheap, specifically the Xeon ones, and I wanna build an inexpensive gaming computer for my little step brothers.
>>
LGA1150 is a dead socket at this point. The good motherboards are sold out and all that's left is cheap shit. If you're willing to go on eBay for a good motherboard then that's fine, but Intel isn't making LGA1150 CPUs anymore.
>>
So I read somewhere that right now, you can get better value by buying the Xeon equiv of current i5s/i7s. Is this true?

I'm considering building a nice workstation for myself and it'd be great if I could get Xeon+ECC this time around without jacking up the cost too much. It'd be my first proper workstation hardware.
>>
>>52334181
4690k for sure. The 6600k includes an always-on mic that listens in on everything you say around it. It will also use your own processing power to interpet the words you say to turn them into text before sending this information off to Intel.
>>
>>52339553
this
I got mine for $150 and it blew me away how much nicer it was than my oced 4670k
>>
>>52339625
>you can get better value by buying the Xeon equiv of current i5s/i7s.

Depends on the deals.

If the 4790k is $279 and below, it'll be a better deal than the 1241 (sub-$260). It's literally 20% better.

But once the 4790k starts hiking up past $310, then the 1241 becomes more cost-effective.
>>
>>52334181
why not a 5820k
>>
>>52334181
Neither.
>>
>>52339766

because the x99 chipset is fucking expensive ($200-$300 boards) and power-hog.
>>
>>52339793
you can get cheaper boards, as for power, i don't give a shit.

5820k > everything else > you.
>>
>>52339735
Cool, thanks.

Another dumb question: is there actually a difference between socket 2011 and 2011-v3 or is newegg being stupid?
>>
>>52334181
Intel 8084
>>
>>52339927
>Intel 8084
Fuck that, get the 4004
>>
>>52339793
This is why I opted for 6700k myself.

$300 for a decent x99 board and the house fire of haswell-e wasn't it worth it. I came from a house fire 8350 and didn't want to back into another one.

6700k build I got the same quality $300 x99 board for $200 on z170 with an updated chipset feature set, and saved myself $200 total. Didn't need as strong of a cooler so that saved money as well.

Price of Mobo + Ram + 3rd party fan is the consideration of Skylake which was made in Israel to jew you.

>6700k build I got the same quality $300 x99 board

oh wow

- u got 8 dimms?
- u can run 2 PCIe cards at 16x mode?
- u can easily overclock a 3.5ghz to 4.5ghz without even trying?

please tell me more about your mythical z170 board!
>>
>>52336257
690 is faster.

770 is a 680 with a beefier stock clocks. about 10-15% faster than a stock 680.

the 690 is two 680's in sli on a single pcb.
>>
>>52340391
>u got 8 dimms?
why do i need or want 8 dims? most people i see with x99 boards generally have 4 sticks at most. the ones with the shittier x99 boards that only have 4 dim slots (two on each side) only use two sticks.
>u can run 2 PCIe cards at 16x mode?
why would i waste money of multi card configs? i've had my fill of sli back during the c2d days and it was a mess.
> u can easily overclock a 3.5ghz to 4.5ghz without even trying?
yes actually. thats been the case apparently with all intel processors since sandy. they're all great overclockers.

question for you. can your 5830k hit 4.5ghz without burning down the house?

>At 4.1 GHz, peak power is +104W over the system power draw at stock, with another 40W at 4.3 GHz. This shows that Haswell-E can be a power hog from even small overclocks, and thus users must have cooling to match. If we add the 140W TDP and the +140W more from the overclock (it would most likely be more than this due to the change of efficiency in the PSU curve), then a mildly overclocked CPU is fast approaching 300W. One can imagine that a highly clocked 4.7 GHz sample would be nearer 400W, and thus users should purchase power supplies to match.

thats as bad as my old 8350.
>>
>not just picking up a cheap shitty intel quad core 4690k or not and waiting for zen to release so intel can get off their ass and release better products
>>
>>52340522
>anything over 1.25 volts requires a water/liquid cooling as a bare minimum, with up to 1.35V needing a triple (3x120mm) radiator setup depending on ambient temperatures. As with most overclocked setups, this means that the enthusiast user must decide between clock speed or fan noise for their machine.
>Another issue with Haswell-E is the current draw of the CPU. ASUS is stating that the standard current draw for the CPU can reach 25 amps, meaning that the power supply must be capable of supplying at least 30 amps on the EPS12V cable.

and they say amd is a house fire
>>
Q6600.
>>
>>52340522
i hit 76C with a 1.3V overclock which is the highest recommended voltage for haswell-e,. they're not really that hot. haven't found my max overclock yet but i will once i finish my custom loop. it's currently stable at 4.4/1.25v.
>>
>>52340623
Based Q6600 and Im still using it now

I hope AMD can compete soon with Intel

I miss the huge leap of performance between Pentium 4 and the Q6600

Haswell isnt that much of an improvement and most games arent CPU dependent to warrant an upgrade.
>>
>>52340568
Haswell-E also has DOUBLE the cores/cache as normal haswell

This is while playing GTA5 at 75 FPS with a decent level of settings. In case anyone want's to have some idea of how this CPU does.
