>>52331999 the first linux os i installed is arch and i was using it for whole summer, it was stable and cool as fuck yet i coulndnt get usb automount working since i was like 14 or something. If one can read , then one can use arch if one really wants to.
>>52331809 Openbox is a little tough to get started on but it's comfy as fuck once you do, plus it runs on like 0 system resources, very light weight >>52332172 But display managers just look nice, much more friendly and comfy than booting to a command line
>>52332411 The times have moved on, young man. It doesn't even take two hours for a full system recompile these days. There really is no excuse anymore. Apart from being complex as fuck, fuck that shit why the fuck can't you solve these reverse dependencies yourself? fuck you portage.
>>52332239 mate is good but it lacks a good compositor (vsync) and the startup thing when the theme changes is weird looking, and no compton doesnt cut it for nvidia. I wish gnome 3 had all these features/options/menus but i like the search in gnome/nautilus too.
>>52332461 i literally tried to compile core KDE 3 months ago , cpu is i5 4670. i lost patience after 2-3 hours. And im sure i told it to use 4 cores, but maybe i used too "good" optimization method (i dont remember what the setting was called but you choose something about opimization and i used the 1 slower than recommended so maybe i failed)
>>52332474 don't forget that its task manager just looks weird. I don't know how to explain it but it lacks something like a strong profile i guess. Not to mention the never ending memory leaks it suffers. The lacking wayland support is a minus too. Op should just go with free drivers and gnome wayland.
>>52332544 Yeah there are a few manual steps involved to make it hurry the fuck up. for example putting /var/tmp/portage on tmpfs and using --jobs=4 and all cores for makeopts. That alone should make it pretty fast. I don't use any optimization apart form -march=native. but i guess the best method to make it fast to have many cores. AMD is better in that regard, even if they share their cache.
>>52332556 they will add wayland support to MATE. It has good loading times and sensible desktop experience imo , but it gets behind in terms of some new hip features. It feels like using win xp in our era , but without the 4gb ram limit and with some stupid bugs that should really be fixed with high priority.
>>52331809 KDE Plasma >= 5.5 together with Qt 5.5.1. Any older than that, and you'll encounter crashes, but that combindation is rock solid. Don't forget to switch off Akonadi, though. You can keep baloo, it's actually very useful.
>>52332689 its hard to tell, i for one would get annoyed as fuck that the "programs" and "places" menus dont have the build in search thats in nautilus/shell. In other words if it wasnt gnome shell with classic mode put on top of it , but a classic mode with gnome shell functionality inside it
Every time i use gnome i end up using kde programs for the functionality. I don't get why they fuck it up so much with nautilus. Why don't they put more love in that, it is literally the only program more important than the shell itself. I like that you can actually theme gtk but that never holds me long and i am back to kde again.
>>52332826 i loved kde when it was mature kde 3 or 4 but right now im annoyed as fuck by it and the search in nautilus is really nice compared to dolphin. I also used nautilus long enough to forget what features are missing , but i deep in my soul that they fucked up.
>>52332855 dolphin can assign different views for folders and subfolders, and it sticks to them. The date column in all views behaves the same way, in nautilus sorting the files per date have different meanings in different view modes (one sorts for creation date the other for modify date but both named the same). I also make extensive use of the filter bar in dolphin, it is fucking satisfying to just type a little and get everything relevant in the current folder filtered instantly, you can even sticky the filter and navigate through the fodlers that way. Nautilus just fires up the search and presents you with a different view outside of the folder context. Not to mention it takes a few seconds for that to show up. That's most of my usage right there down the shitter.
>>52332986 The biggest advantage dolphin has is the built in terminal. So often you have to run a quick command in the folder you are in and having a terminal all the time is glorious. If you have never used that, try to press f4 and have your life changed.
If you want a cohesive, slick system, GNOME. If you want more eye candy, KDE. If you want more minimalism/performance, Xfce. If you want even more minimalism/performance LXDE. If you want ricing and tiling, i3. If you want a nice good old retro feel, MATE. If you want something 'familiar', Cinnamon. If you just want to show off, Pantheon.
>>52335131 This is a meme, I tried debian for like a week before using arch and I couldn't do shit on it, no packages and weird work around to get the sofware you wanted, AUR is too valuable to pass up might as well start with it
