>inb4 muh reddir bla bla bla
>implying that I do not give a damn fuck
Enjoy, anons! :)
Yeah, sure, it wasn't clearly released by the same developer who has been shilling his shitty linux fork all month right?
Why dont you go back there you faggot?
Cool concept desu, but I really have to wonder if this makes sense given a full blown Windows 10 machine is probably only $25-50 more. It seems like it has some minor compatibility issues with apps as well.
The Surface clone they have listed on their website does look very interesting though, and I'd love to see the progress with that. For the right price it could be a very interesting option.
Especially if Microsoft can get their shit together with the Windows Store, this thing will probably have trouble finding wide spread success, but a cool project either way
>read the description of this shit
>its essentially exactly what the priv os should be like
>helll, it's what BB10 should have been like
Itself is not impressive, but sweet God is this a perfect match for the trackpad keyboard. Just add the left and right click button and bam, Priv's keyboard makes sense rather than being redundant (swype works as or faster than it, niggas).
>Especially if Microsoft can get their shit together with the Windows Store
They won't. Metro-style apps are such crap on the desktop, that it makes no sense to use those in favor of "traditional" software. And at the same time, there's no reason for developers to put their software on the Store when users already know to go to their websites and download it.
I like the idea of Remix OS for tablets, where Android can be a bit annoying to use.
Well, at least from how they are describing it, actual computers that currently use Linux or Windows, which is completely retarded. This thing should run great in 2-3 gb of ram, and should allow for quite a lot of extra features in what previously was a email and word document machines. Hell, I can imagine a touch enabled Lenovo 100s with a better camera for 300 dollars working great with this thing.
yes it works
pic related running from usb 2.0 live
its more like kde desu
So why would I use this rather than just using Linux? The Android "app ecosystem" is inferior to the Linux one, particularly if you use Wine to run Windows programs. Every Linux distro I know of has ten times the versatility and power of this.
This is the wrong approach. Rather than dumbing down PCs by running Android on them, we should be fixing our phones and tablets so we can use them for real work.
Is it the official logo of the whole thing?
Looks like its just another shitty loonix with even less application support
>but muh app store
Pay money for applications or get bombarded with ads and botnets? This is what you want for your desktop?
>Who the fuck would voluntarily install a gimped OS on their desktop?
I'm tempted to try it just to see how poorly it runs when compared to a lightweight Linux distro so I can shit on Android more than I already do (my comparisons so far have just been with virtual machines limited to a single core and half the processor cycles to get to something that benchmarks close to phones and the lightweight Linux distros win every time).
>Implying any of those compare to the desktop equivalents
Yay you get MS Paint but also have to pay money for it. Microsoft and apple BTFO
You can repurpose an old laptop with it.
Massive dick coming through. Any scaling settings at all?
what's better: console os or remix os? I was gonna try console os one of these days but this looks neat too.
Ok Google IO devs. Look. You've been shitposting this over and over to get our reactions from a tough market.
It is android. It isn't windows, and you openly take statistics from people's phones regardless of what settings they use by circumnavigating legal terminology to get the same results via opened apps.
OS-X is like using a phone in quite a few manners and I already fucking hate it, no offense apple shills here on /g/, but this phone to desktop-feeling OS thing has to stop. It kills productivity and forces a machine to constantly have to update- which is good for devs because they get spying statistics and bad for me because my bandwidth with comcuck already sucks and gets capped. On top of that-fuck your stats.
>file is a 14MB .exe instead of 2GB .iso
Provide another mirror please (MEGA or something like that). I won't install some Baidu download manager rootkit just to try out an OS that will be released publicly in 2 days anyway.
Oh well I'll pass then.
-Easy to learn GUI
-keyboard shortcuts work (ctrl + c and whatnot)
-just like I thought: multitasking SUCKS. It's the same as android. sure you can have many windows open but they run the risk to be closed automatically if you ignore them for too long. Just what the fuck? that's unacceptable on a desktop OS. DEALBREAKER.
Anyway I recommend you guys try it. Just don't expect it to be a final everyday use desktop OS. it's not there yet, and considering it's android based it might never get there.
Found an alternative download link:
I have their remix mini. Cool device at face value. Have a couple complaints though.
Can't force an app to run in tablet or cellphone mode.
Multitasking needs work.
Can't use live wallpapers or widgets.
Some apps don't work right with input. ex: pew pew 2
>Lightweight versions of Linux would be better
Will it run lighter than debian+mate on my old shitty hp mini 110e netbook?
All i want is a way to run emulators without compiling them from source or installing windows.
According to remix's website,
"Minimum System Requirements
A USB 3.0 flash drive that supports FAT32 format, with a minimum capacity of 8GB and a recommended writing speed of 20MB/s.
A PC with USB legacy boot option. "
Which means a lot of uefi tablets aren't going to be included. What a shame.
oops that's right, I didn't bother to translate the text, here is what google says:
>So finally the Phoenix system deleted heard Remix X86 will be released this month on the 12th beta version, we hope Remix X86 can bring after a better experience
Android on x86 is a major thing because it would allow developers to create cross platform apps easier and more consistently without needing to cross-compile for many platforms..

Interesting, let me give this a shot.
64-bit cpu, not sure on the uefi, but its very likely you're on a pure 64bit system.
>64-bit cpu, not sure on the uefi, but its very likely you're on a pure 64bit system.
Yeah 64bit CPU but the UEFI is only 32bit. Can't boot 64bit Windows but Grub makes it a non-issue with mixed mode.
Eh only 2GB of RAM so for Windows there's not much use even if it could boot 64bit. Even Linux there's not much use for the 64bit install other than keeping my environments consistent.
I'm not one to accuse every thread mentioning a product as a "shill thread", but these RemixOS threads are pretty blatant.
OP, please just buy an ad on 4chan. It's a self-serve system, easy to do, and everyone site-wide can see them. Rest assured, your advertisement will go into the rotation fairly and you'll get the exposure your company needs.
I had a laptop with an athlon ql-60 dual core.
Newest atom chip I own is this:
athlon was faster.
Also did work on a single core athlon last weekend, still faster.
(Same guy working on his tablet)
I just download all unknown torrents into a fedora system hosted under KVM. I have SELinux set to Fedora's defaults which are extremely restrictive. After I scan the torrent and test it out to make sure it's safe I copy the file too the host machine.
If you think on the bright side, android is a linux-based os and it supports a lot of games, usually people complain that linux can't run games and stuff ike that, with an android desktop port like this there's a chance to get more people into the linux area. You just need root access to customize android to your heart content after all. Though, I didn't install this remix os yet so I couldn't test stuff for myself, I'm just speculating for now.
I doubt we can already customise android because a part of it is closed source (?). Thats why we have things like Xposed. + the root in android isn't completely similar to the root in linux.
Android is a stripped down, googlefied botnet linux kernel with a somewhat locked down google java stack dropped on top. Nothing more. In other words, you're comparing a Ford Focus to a high end Ferrari because they both have four wheels and you know nothing about cars.
>I'm just speculating for now.
I agree. Full of speculation, you are.
I was able to do quite a bit of stuff with busybox on my shitty rooted android phone tbqh, if this OS doesn't come with any new restrictions, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to do the same on it.
>Minimum System Requirements
>A USB 3.0 flash drive that supports FAT32 format, with a minimum capacity of 8GB and a recommended writing speed of 20MB/s.
Why? isn't it a port for PC?
I'm downloading the torrent now:
but I prefer MEGA for many other reasons.
shouldn't it support most of the Android apps out of the box? if not it makes no sense, that would mean devs have to re-release all thier apps to make them compatible with this OS... I hope it's not the case, I'm gonna trash it otherwise.
Can i load this on a AMD system?
The site mentions Intel and Nvidia but no sign of AMD.
>leak of free OS
>leak of something no one cares about
>leak from people using supposedly high security open source software
>leaked straight from official forums
I don't know which part is the least believable.
For a lot of reasons.
1. Android x86 was already popular
2. People have asked Google for this for years
3. Muh material design
4. It has a brighter future than most Linux distributions
5. Muh apps
Exactly the same thing happened when Elementary OS released a new version.
> downloading botnet os
> doesn't run in virtualbox
> tfw cuck os doesn't even allow me to get botnet'd
Android generally is a bitch with VMs. I've a live Android disc and it works well without install but it fails when I try to install it, did you try running this Remix OS from CD?
And windows>all that
Just because android exist on x86 doesn't mean everyone will switch to it, everything exist in a proper pc fashion on windows already, and developers won't do anything until it reaches enough users, which will be never.
>GC to prevent retarded devs from fucking everything
>JVM is pretty damn fast these days
>Access to langs like Scala and Clojure that make software more fun to develop
I don't see how this is bad. GNU forcing everyone into C hasn't been especially productive or good for security. Few programmers are even remotely intelligent enough to use C properly, let alone for nothing in return.
So you're telling me that the developer of an Android port at least partially intended to run on portable hardware has waited until the very last days before public release to implement something so trivially basic and yet so vital as a battery level indicator?
Someone explain how this is not a meme tier os to me. It's based off of Linux, of which there are many legitimate distros worth running on a PC, but also based off of Android which is designed exclusively for mobile. After basing their os on a mobile os, they are trying to make it work on a PC again?
Why the fuck didn't they just make their own Linux distro based off of something else? This just sounds counterproductive.
This is one of the most obviously marketed schemes I've ever seen
>it's like android... But better!
>hype it up at CES
>oops you'll have to wait til next week to try it out :^)
>:o it leaked! Get it now while it's hot :^)
Maybe I'll install it on a netbook or something or an HTPC and try it out.
>able to do quite a bit of stuff
Why would people settle for 'quite a bit' when we can do whatever we want right now completely unrestricted with just about every linux desktop distro available?
Giving up 100% total control over your operating system to be able to run a few mobile apps. That's the one and only selling point? The shilling... it's real.
This. I would actually think about using this if it came with a good terminal and the permissions of Linux. but it's basically Android for PC, and hence means it has all the flaws of Android.
Whenever I see these threads I get a little excited because I confuse Remix with React, and start to think that React OS is making progress. Then I start to realize that Remix OS is just Android, and my hope and optimism disappears.
I can appreciate the irony in you calling me that in defending one of the quintessential cuckold of operating systems, Android.
yea clit works but is different sensitivity than trackpad and there's only one setting for both of them lol
it's fun to play around on but resident mode fucks up, even tho i was able to install apps on guest mode shit just wouldnt work on resident mode
wanted to test out chromecast screen casting to my tv but w/o root it's not possible :/
Scaling is absolute dogshit in Chrome.
Otherwise it seems mostly okay, besides buggy. Loading from a flashdrive is slow af, anyway to install to SSD/HDD?
Here's that Eee PC running regular Android-x86 5.1
Could you turn this into a hybrid GNU/linux distro?
Run a conventional full linux install underneath but use remix for the window manager and have the java VM layer for android applications.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
I tried my laptop but it blinks black and white then goes back to booting with the logo.
I tried my netbook but it doesnt book. Gets stuck at "detecting android x86"
Alright, let's be honest:
This is fucking awful for desktops. It feels like a big ass tablet with a keyboard and mouse. No matter how you change the look, it is still Android, and you're not going to find any actually good software there.
Want to copy ISO's to usb? Can't.
Want to have an actually good file manager? Nope.
Browser extensions? Nadda.
Games? If you like candy crush.
Sure, it would be fine for a tablet... but it's outclassed on desktop by even the worst Linux distro.
Forget the hype and the UI. It's BAD.
The reason the first one doesn't exist is because nobody has had hardware physically capable of copying to USBs in the first place given the origin of the operating system.
Plenty of file managers exist for Android. I doubt they are incompatible with Remix. I think people are giving the operating system too much shit for doing something different and the fact that "X or Y technical thing that I need to do on desktops" doesn't exist is because Android has been technically incapable of doing them. I assume Busybox is somewhere in this system, so we'll see what people can make of it in it's infancy.
Note: I'm not defending anything besides this, I'm still interested in seeing how much botnet this thing packs and what the state of the internals is like.
This OS is pretty good. Don't let Windows and Mac shills fool you.
>quad core i7 vs dual core ARM
>turns out i7 is faster
>Run a live linux system from one usb port then use DD to burn the RemixOS iso onto the internal hard drive.
Sometimes I wonder why this website attrack children, and how even tough reddit's hivemind and down-boat system is dumb it actually helps you find a good answer.
website is so dead.
>Autism: The OS.
Lets build a OS
MFW its hard to make OS from scratch
To much werk, lets just use Android and skin it
>No android apps meant for desktop
>Android not meant for desktop
>Claim its the best OS since TempleOS
>MFW its nothing but garbage built atop android so there's EVEN MORE fragmentation
>Cant do anything better than a android tablet
It's aimed towards retards who want their apps (yes that includes candy whatever) on a laptop or mini PC.
Maybe someone will come along and make something interesting out of it, like make it more like Linux (lol standard binaries) that can also run Android shit. Who knows.
Trying to install, but shows this and then reboots, any ideas?
Might be allright for netbook use, but I could just use any other lightweight distro
No-one here's excited for it. OP has been shilling his lagroid + DE combo here for the last month or so
Don't even bother. VirtualBox lacks real GPU support so it will run like absolute dogshit regardless. Most apps won't even work. I've tried Android-x86 in VirtualBox and it wasn't even useable.
