The guy who invented the method that taught me fluent Japanese is a Kenyan man who described his childhood as "running up grassy hills to fetch baskets of fresh vegetables". I don't know if he was born outside of a city but that sounds relatively rural to me. Especially for an African. I think he did a portion of his highschool in the UK, and then got his bachelors of Computer Science in the US, and then eventually moved to Japan where he started the project that I learned about him at.
