What's there to laugh at?

Now you have one port for everything, rather than like 2 USB ports, 1 headphone jack, 1 mic, 1 HDMI slot, 1 VGA slot, 1 SD card, 1 Micro SD card, 1 charging port, 1 disc drive, 1 USB port. It's a waste of space.

Also 1 port looks better than many ports.

the overwhelming majority of laptops these days don't support docks the way you're thinking of (the 90's and early 00's era dock that locks a laptop in).

I interned at MSR over the summer and they issued me a Thinkpad Carbon X1 or whatever. The "dock", such as it was, is just a USB hub. That's great, but it's fundamentally the same idea as Apple uses with the Macbook in the OP.

If anything, a dock connecting by USB port means that I don't need to worry if the "dock"ing mechanism will work with my next laptop.

It's unfortunate that the Macbook has one port. I wouldn't have designed it that way and I wouldn't buy it if I was in the market for a new laptop. But in this one instance, the idea of a single peripheral that plugs into the laptop that gives you Micro/SD ports, USB, charging, etc... is a good move.

I wish it had Ethernet, but I have niche needs for ethernet.
>>
>>52284531
It's weird that it only has the one USB-C port. I mean, it's obvious why - no native USB 3.1 in the Intel Skylake chipset - but it's still silly. Hopefully the Kaby Lake refresh chipset fixes that: I gather AMD's chipsets for Zen will.

I have a 128GB flash drive on my keychain. Have had it for at least 6 months (I had a 16GB flash drive for several years before it).

I used neither of them more than once in the last 3 years. I study CS and use multiple computers every day - my home setup is actually two computers (one laptop and one desktop that drives a few 4k monitors), so it's not for lack of opportunity.

I'm not saying nobody anywhere ever uses flash drives, but Apple made a bet that there are lots of consumers who won't mind not being able to transfer data from one flash drive to another, and I think that wasn't an insane bet for them to make.

If you want to illustrate the limitations that a single port introduces, this is such a weak one to choose that I'm just now realizing I might've missed that you were joking. Were you?
>>
>>52284611
OR, you could plug 1 hub into 1 port while still having 5 other ports. Why do you need to be restricted to 1 port in order to use a hub?
>>
>>52289643

So you don't have to plug each individual thing on each port of the hub? Nice magic device you have there. All you're doing is adding up a useless step AND charging for it.

>have to buy hub
>have to plug in hub
>have to plug in each separate thing on each separate port on the hub
>if you were already using the port and wanted to plug two things you have to take disconnect it, then plug in the hub, then replug everything

vs

>plug in each separate thing on each separate port that already comes built-in in your device without having to buy anything separate or having to wonder where the fuck is your hub in case you need it
>>

>>
I used to get pissed off at the existence of the MacBook, but now that I think about it I'll never buy one and other people who do aren't my concern as long as they don't try to force me to use the thing. There will always be systems for those of us who need more.
>>

>>
>>52290149
are we going to compare the amount of effort it takes to align and press down a laptop versus plug in a USB cable?

because this is real high level shit if that's the case.
>>
>>52290149
A docking station is pretty much the same thing as an adapter. Just more plastic. My points is, one port is enough if you have a docking station/adapter. In return you get amazing mobility. I'm glad Apple released the MacBook so I can pick up a single port Windows laptop in one or two years when everyone plays catch up.
>>
>>52290177
