Now you have one port for everything, rather than like 2 USB ports, 1 headphone jack, 1 mic, 1 HDMI slot, 1 VGA slot, 1 SD card, 1 Micro SD card, 1 charging port, 1 disc drive, 1 USB port. It's a waste of space.
>>52284596 >go home >plug in one hub >all your devices are now connected vs >go home >plug in power cable to power port >plug in ethernet cable to ethernet port >plug in display to displayport port >plug in display to hdmi port >plug in mouse to usb port >plug in keyboard to usb port
>>52284625 >putting up with dogshit tier laptop input when there is absolutely no reason to Yes, even the vaunted Macbook trackpad is shitty next to proper input devices. It's just less shit than the rest.
>Go home and plug one USB in because your monitor keyboard mouse are all plugged into pic related on the desk like a civilized human >When you're away from home you can still use USB, hdmi, vga and wired Ethernet without carrying around an adapter like a sad person.
>inb4 buy two usb-c adapters cause meme about buy two iPads for multitasking
>>52284611 >be out and about >can use a flash drive >can plug my system into a TV to watch movies or show a group of people an interesting video >can plug my system into a projector to give a presentation >can plug my system into a second monitor >can plug in whatever I want without having to drag around an expensive dongle and still be able to charge my system
>go home >plug my system into a dock that fits neatly on the desk and looks far nicer and more managed than some shitty spaghetti octopus lazily hanging off of the side of my laptop >all my devices are now connected plus I even have functionality beyond just basic ports that every human-style laptop has had since the beginning of time
>>52284961 the overwhelming majority of laptops these days don't support docks the way you're thinking of (the 90's and early 00's era dock that locks a laptop in).
I interned at MSR over the summer and they issued me a Thinkpad Carbon X1 or whatever. The "dock", such as it was, is just a USB hub. That's great, but it's fundamentally the same idea as Apple uses with the Macbook in the OP.
If anything, a dock connecting by USB port means that I don't need to worry if the "dock"ing mechanism will work with my next laptop.
It's unfortunate that the Macbook has one port. I wouldn't have designed it that way and I wouldn't buy it if I was in the market for a new laptop. But in this one instance, the idea of a single peripheral that plugs into the laptop that gives you Micro/SD ports, USB, charging, etc... is a good move.
I wish it had Ethernet, but I have niche needs for ethernet.
>>52284531 It's weird that it only has the one USB-C port. I mean, it's obvious why - no native USB 3.1 in the Intel Skylake chipset - but it's still silly. Hopefully the Kaby Lake refresh chipset fixes that: I gather AMD's chipsets for Zen will.
>>52285873 I can't tell you how much I hate working on these things. Normies keep spilling water on them and then blame us when we can't fix their completely fucked up rusty motherboards that look like someone smeared toothpaste all over it and let it dry.
Also, macbook batteries fuck up ALL THE TIME. they expand and then break the keyboard or touchpad.
>>52287207 Eh, I thought type c was revolutionary Well I guess them being reversible is pretty good improve over the Micro USB too Phones should start using it faster, even if 2.0, it seems like a much better connector than micro USB
>>52289347 wait... the new macbooks actually have ONLY ONE PORT that has to double for both AC POWER and USB? i thought it was a joke, guys. how can a company that always put hardware and physical first have done something so pants on head retarded?
>>52289488 pretty much, I glossed over any mention of eye-devices so as not to pollute my brain with useless information that could send me into cognitive dissonance. i'm still recovering from finding out about the Apple Pencil(tm)(r)(c) last week
>>52289545 >I glossed over any mention of eye-devices so as not to pollute my brain with useless information that could send me into cognitive dissonance. you browse 4chan. this is like eating junk food and drinking diet soda because you're watching your diet.
if you go into a frothing rage because of mention of a single brand, then 1) call it that; just cop to it 2) get help dude.
>>52286050 >be macfag >there's no true desktops avaliable, only screens with built in laptop motherboards, laptop motherboards in small cases, and very overpriced mid tier workstations with no expansion except for thunderbolt.
The funny thing about this MacBook, which is their worst yet, is that as soon as phones and everything starts using usb-c, Apple will stop.
>>52289583 >eating junk food and drinking diet soda ouch, how did you guess?
what sent my delicate psycho-emotional balance into absolute chaos was the bit on Apple's website about styluses being a revolutionary technology. i couldn't take it anymore. i snapped. i need professional help.
>>52289607 I have a 128GB flash drive on my keychain. Have had it for at least 6 months (I had a 16GB flash drive for several years before it).
I used neither of them more than once in the last 3 years. I study CS and use multiple computers every day - my home setup is actually two computers (one laptop and one desktop that drives a few 4k monitors), so it's not for lack of opportunity.
I'm not saying nobody anywhere ever uses flash drives, but Apple made a bet that there are lots of consumers who won't mind not being able to transfer data from one flash drive to another, and I think that wasn't an insane bet for them to make.
If you want to illustrate the limitations that a single port introduces, this is such a weak one to choose that I'm just now realizing I might've missed that you were joking. Were you?
So you don't have to plug each individual thing on each port of the hub? Nice magic device you have there. All you're doing is adding up a useless step AND charging for it.
>have to buy hub >have to plug in hub >have to plug in each separate thing on each separate port on the hub >if you were already using the port and wanted to plug two things you have to take disconnect it, then plug in the hub, then replug everything
>plug in each separate thing on each separate port that already comes built-in in your device without having to buy anything separate or having to wonder where the fuck is your hub in case you need it
I used to get pissed off at the existence of the MacBook, but now that I think about it I'll never buy one and other people who do aren't my concern as long as they don't try to force me to use the thing. There will always be systems for those of us who need more.
When I come home I plug in power, keyboard, mouse, 2 monitors and headphones in my laptop. On the go I never used any of the ports. Honestly one port with an adapter would work for me and I would even prefer it...
>>52290149 A docking station is pretty much the same thing as an adapter. Just more plastic. My points is, one port is enough if you have a docking station/adapter. In return you get amazing mobility. I'm glad Apple released the MacBook so I can pick up a single port Windows laptop in one or two years when everyone plays catch up.
>>52290177 >effort it takes to align and press down a laptop If you've ever used this sentence, you're such a morbidly obese fatass that the ideal thing for you is to destroy your computer right now so you get more exercise instead of sitting around.
>>52284483 What the fuck? did apple really move to the smartphone style "one port for everything"? I can't use usb with my phone even though the hardware supports it because charging ports are used heavily and get the shit kicked out of them and aren't reliable enough for data. I thought they understood this and that's why they had the big heavy quick-release magsafe connector.... Fucking apple has really gone down the toilet.
