So was this the holy grail of cpus?
Anyone still running this bad boy?
I'm still running with it and it still holds up very well after 5 years.
I'm still unsure of upgrading to skylake this year. Convince me /g/.
Dont, the only reason why you'd want to upgrade is because you want less power consumption or a better IGP (which is fucking useless if you already own a dedicated GPU)
Also, check em
sure am, don't see myself needing to upgrade any time soon. Put the 970 in replacing a 570 just before Christmas.
>tfw 5 years of neglectable improvement on the cpu department because of AMD's incompetence.
As someone who also owns a 2500k, is it worth upgrading to a 6600k? Been pondering about it for weeks.
>Also modern chipsets. Z68 is showing age.
I never looked into chipsets, whats the benefit of newer stuff?
I know fuck all about motherboards in general actually.. Normally just get the cheapest pretty one
My cousin works for Intel and says the I7 is a fantastic chip set and you should upgrade.
Okay. I am kidding. Though I do have a cousin who works for Intel and was telling us about the I7 and I ended up getting one. Though I really should have spent more and upgraded other shit like a solid state and new graphics card instead of just buying a super CPU.
I bought a PC from a friend with an I5 and it runs just as good.. nah.. probably better than mine because he is a comp sci major working for Oracle and knew what he was doing more.
This was a successful meme
Look at the all saps that bought into the 2500k+560ti meme
>Hey you should skimp on GPU power so you can overspend on double or easily more the processing power!
>What? a year later you couldn't get 60 FPS on ultra? But your CPU usage is only at 30%!
Make sure you get your MINIMALIST case that looks like a mini fridge and a 600+ watt PSU for the SINGLE video card! Falcon said so!
What is this shit. A K chip and overclocking MB would have been like $50- 80 more, hardly enough to go from a garbage GPU to a great one.
When paying more for power supplies you generally only get the nice features like fully modular, silent mode, longer warranties on the higher watt units.
>mfw an idiot gets tricked into buying a pre build pc with a high end i7 with 32 gb of ram and it has either an integrated or 750/950gt graphics card for like 1200$
>calls it a gaming machine because the salesman said so
>mfw I got a 4790k for 280 dollars last black friday.
Totally a high priority for first time builders with a budget that just wanted a good deal and not to be memed at.
>Get a modular power supply in a close screenless case we demanded you get and a CPU soo over the top powerfuk that could quad SLI most GPUs on the market in its day!
>But should he get a top shelf GPU?
>NOOO!! its not a good DEAL!
The guy who sells those computers get paid to shill them
/g/ did it for free and honestly thought they were not going about it retardedly
I also have one R9 280.
Runs all games with good framerates, with this processor MSI Afterburner show 95% Gpu usage running some games.
Should I really need to upgrade? I don't like Intel so much, this pc is for Gayming and programming.
Too bad the 2500k will be left in the dust once DX12 comes out and the lack of hyperthreading/4 threads will finally finish the cpu off.
The 2600k however does have hyperthreading/8 threads so that cpu will last a bit longer.
CPUs run at faster frequencies, but at a much lower TDP these days. It's all about the mobile market, not because of AMD's lack of competition. Right around 2010, Intel rightly decided to focus on tablet/laptop-focused designs to prevent their sales from stagnating and declining due to the fall in popularity of the traditional desktop computer. Battery life, heat output, and performance were the three key points of Intel's new designs post-Ivy Bridge.
Please help me
i have a i5 2500k and it refuses to boot up, it worked fine for 4-5 years with no issue.
i overclocked it a bit and it worked just fine until i lowered it a bit but now it's acting up for no reason.
is there a way to reset my bios to stock settings? i can't even get into my bios because my monitor isn't get any signal and the leds on my keyboard is all lit up for no reason
Microcenter here in Columbus has great prices all year round.
no. the 2600k was. 2500k was for fucking poorfags. fuckers who own this probably bought an e8400 instead of a fucking q6600 back in 2008 too, claiming they would never need more than 2 cores LOL
I love my 2500k. 4.6Ghz, doesn't go above 70C.
I'll push it further one day, but don't see the point at the moment.
Is Sandy really that bad? My $285 poorfag rig is faster than that. (Full load for 1 day 11 hours, thus the temps)
The only real difference in our scores is in the Multi Threaded part.
The 2500k is also more than two years older than your 4670k. Goes to show that not too much has changed since then. I would like to see the score clock for clock though, seeing as you're running at 4ghz.
I'm not clocked much higher than him, dunno why my multi-threaded score is so much higher.
Sandy really isn't that bad at all, CPUz just seems to not like it in benchmark scores.
That's weird, not sure why my (>>52285021) multi-thread score is so much lower.
I closed everything that was running and I got the same score. Motherboard maybe? Windows 7? Might just be the silicon lottery.
Dunno, your RAM is faster but higher timings, I doubt motherboard would cause that much of a difference.
Here's mine at 4.5... weird.
+ 560ti master race. Z68 broke down on me in 2012.
Will be upgrading for better gpu this year.
2011 was the best year to upgrade ever.
That's weird, I didn't know OCs could be unstable in that way. I ran Prime95 for about 3 hours to test stability. I'm not the best as OC'ing yet, I followed a pretty comprehensive guide when I did this OC.
I'll check my clock later, as I can't be bothered now, but if my multi-threaded score does come up when I lower my clocks, what should I do from there? Would it be a voltage issue?
>shit talking the Q9550
>suggest the Q9450
>not just getting a Q6600 in the first place
Even when AMD was competent the gains were negligible, we passed the point of diminishing returns for everything but gaymes and enterprise(TM) bleeding-edge shit in PCs years ago.
I am not the most tech savvy guy but why the fuck?
For most jobs nothing's really improved since then, the Q6600 was especially a sweet spot.
I'm posting from one right now, in fact. I'd be daily driving it if I wasn't rebuilding a dual X5450 box instead.
>shitty gigglebyte P35 board
>shitty "duel" BIOS
>MFW i took it from 2.4 to 3.2 on stock voltage
>100% stable for ever
You could be thermally throttling.
I wonder if the branch predictor or prefetcher can shit themselves with the CPU otherwise working.
I believe the cache has ECC. Possible if you're getting bit errors that you're taking a performance hit there.
Good to see at least some people are enjoying the eternal age of diminishing returns.
I'll just be over here with the GOAT chip
That's good to hear!
I have a brother with some shitty motherboard that won't let him overclock the damn thing.
Was thinking about getting him a new board for it.
Something cheap, used, and with two PCI-E slots so he can crossfire down the road.
>had 8GB of DDR2 RAM
>anyone should know that 2GB DDR2 sticks were generally god fucking awful at overclocking
>B A S E D Asucks P5Q Premium board
>took that sucker from 2.66 Ghz to 3.8 Ghz on stock voltage
>mfw the motherboard died a few months ago and I was forced to upgrade
Worst day of 2015. I miss my P5Q Premium, that board was ballin'
I'd have to say when the i7 launched in 2008 that was the best upgrade at the time and I ran the 920 all the way up until 2014 when I retired it for the 4790K. Before that was an Intel Pentium 4 965. That was the extreme edition I won at the PDXLAN convention in 2005.
Hands down on the i7 920. Was a major improvement over the Core 2 quads that didn't phase me much. I held onto that processor as long as I could. It ran windows vista.
oh the nostalgia.
I had my lapped Q6600@4ghz stable on a Maximus Formula for about a week. It was -30 out and I had some ducting blowing cold (and probably humid lel) air onto the CPU cooler.
It's retired but It still works to this day.
Possibly, dunno what exactly failed on it. I tested the CPU and RAM in an older semi-defective P5Q (this one just wouldn't overclock at all), and decided to sell the CPU, RAM, and dead P5Q Premium.
Some guy bought them who's apparently into component level repair and wanted to try fixing the motherboard. I hope he got it working, it really is a lovely board.
I just finished building a cheapo build for my parents, it was my gift for them for NYE.
I'm seriously thinking of using a Pentium + SSD exclusively from now on, even a shitty NUC with an i3 and just lots of RAM.
CPUs are quite a bit faster. Just not for average users. There just hasn't been a significant architectural overhaul sense Sandy.
12 core Haswell-E Xeons shit over anything from the sandy era in properly threaded applications.
If you don't think you need to upgrade, then don't. The Phenom can bottleneck your 280 in some games, but it's usually not severe. You can wait for either Zen or Kaby and go from there.
>mfw bought a core i7 920 in 2009 and it's probably going to last me until 2019 if not longer

>Games don't demand that much more CPU power
>Even CPU tasks are fast enough to not want me more power
>Intel answers by lowering heat dissipation and considerably better power consumption
>I dont have to have to invest in a heavy CPU heatsink and more case fans and my electricity bill is a bit smaller
I'm okay with this, let the 2011-3 fags deal with the performance arms race.
>it still holds up very well after 5 years.
I mean this single image obviously isn't the whole picture or a perfect representation, but the 2500k is pretty dated at this point
I've been looking to upgrade from my i3-2100 and my mobo which is currently a LGA 1155 socket, should I go for AMD or a new mobo with a LGA 1151 socket? I'm tired of Intel stealing my money and always changing socket types.
It's pretty accurate package temp is about 4 or so over hottest core for me. I haven't delided it so I've still got the garbage TIM which doesnt help.My case is 70ºc+ most of the time because of rendering and lol ATI so I'm fine with it sitting there.
It's probably time for a cleaning though
>Sandy really isn't that bad at all
SB is King. it was the first major jump in intel cpu performance this generation. everything else since then has been incremental. in other words SB owners have been enjoying great performance since 2011, while stragglers have only been getting 5% boosts since then
why the fuck would you own a Q6600 and not overclock it to 3.2 the day you bought it. that was the whole fucking point of the Q6600 back when G0 was released in late 2007. you've basically wasted your entire ownership of the processor
Yes! I listened to /g/ 3 years ago and it paid off. I still use it as a daily driver. Works great on even new games. Has some hick ups but can't complain.
Do you think this can handle vr with a 970 and 16gb of ram?
>Do you think this can handle vr with a 970 and 16gb of ram?
970 is your bottleneck at higher res with vram.
Although I'm running a 4k monitor off one and it runs most things fine.
you did read the >>52288799
i have an ASUS PB279Q (27", 4k, 60 hz) and 2 titan x in SLI. GTA5, FO4, Witcher 3 and MGSV all drop below 60 sometimes. and that's not even at absolute max settings (except MGSV).
2600K mustard race
>2600k -> 3770k -> 5820k master race
>I spent $300 and have a CPU that's only 20% behind the 6700K
>You've spent just under $1000 (plus the extra motherboards and an extra set of ram), and have a CPU that's only 50% faster in applications that fully utilize more than 4 threads, and 0% faster in anything else.
Seems like you enjoy pissing money away desu.
Mine an heroed after it decided it didn't want to have a bios anymore
>Drop the multiplier by one and start cranking that FSB boy
>MFW i paid 85$ for 2GB of DDR2-800 with super tight timings
Guys I have 8gb ram and i'm expanding to 16gb because i'm getting the GTX 980 and I think it's autistic to otherwise upgrade to 12gb in total so here's a question.
My previous ram memory was a crucial card which is an 8gb DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24) card.
Does it matter what kind of 8gb ram card I should get and does it need to be ddr3 cl9 as well at the same speed?
I bought an used i7 3770 and an itx board for it last year coming from an fx 8120 and I couldn't be happier. I seriously don't see myself upgrading in the near future at all, this shit is outstanding. Also itx builds are amazing.
Still using mah 3570k oc @ 4.6 ghz and dont see any reason to upgrade as im only gaming so fuck the i7's. Gonna need to upgrade my gtx 770 though but no clue on what to go for.. Most likely waiting for pascal
Why do you need 16/12? Are you maxing out 8?
Also if they are different speeds it they will all run at the lowest speed. Latency is the oposite I believe.
If you can just get the exact same ram, but it shouldn't matter too much (you may have incompatabilities, it varies).
I just called this store in which I was planning to purchase the ram and I asked this.
The dude told me it'd run on the highest possible speed so for instance, You own a cl9 ram stick and you add a cl10 stick, the cl9 stick will clock to cl10 and keep on the same timing.
Personally I think he's bullshitting me because i'm pretty sure ram has a maximum timing which it stays true to.
But yes i'll just buy 8gb more of the same stick I guess, thanks!
4GHz + 4.2GHz turbo
3.5GHz + 3.9GHz turbo
Still seems a bit much but that's probably it.
Of course this means nothing to anyone overclocking as the silicon lottery averages out to similar numbers for both chips.
If you have multiple sticks, excluding cases of overclocking, it'll run at the lower frequency and the higher latency.

>tfw it's done me proud for years and will probably have to do a few more
I'll miss him when he's gone.
I just wish that software devs and web front end devs would take note of this extended period of stagnation in computing power and stop bloating the hell out of their products because muh convenience. No, you really DON'T need those extra CPU cycles.
Shit pisses me off. I avoid bloat as much as I can in my own projects but there isn't but so much a single guy can do.
It's not really. Skylake actually offers some pretty impressive gay men gains in CPU-bound scenarios, but obviously you have to do something silly like have an overclocked Titan X for 1080p for it to matter.
It even takes the 4790K to school, which is clocked the same out of the box.
It's weird that Broadwell has basically been completely forgotten though. I know Intel sent it out to die, but it might be fun to see where it sits every now and then.
FOSS stuff is better sometimes, but there are some bits that could very easily be lighter.
LibreOffice for example, from a cold start creating a Writer document takes 120MB. Not horrible compared to other software these days, but it could probably have resource consumption comparable to Office 2000 if the team behind it made that a goal. Office suites really haven't changed much in that timeframe, so there's no reason for the increased usage.
WELL THEY DUN FUCKED UP SON
Yeah, yeah, I know there's actually less heat produced now, and things are only getting toasty because Intel is cutting corners, but I thought it'd be funny.... I'll go now.
i7s show some decent gains in more recent titles like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3. Games are finally starting to better take advantage of more threads. Whether it's worth an extra €100 though... probably not. You'd be better served stepping up to a 390X.
Amazon wouldn't. They give their returns a cursory glance and that's about it. I bought a Corsair K70 from their Warehouse section a few weeks ago, advertised as being in perfect condition. One of the legs to raise it up was snapped off and not in the box, meaning whatever jackass bought it originally broke it and returned it as unwanted.
Having said that, fuck you, Jamal.
Similar story here.
My dad wanted to replace his shitty pre-built Dell from 2010, so I advised him on building a desktop and assembled it for him.
Ended up with a Pentium G3258, 120 Kingston SSD, and 8GB of RAM inside of a Fractal Design Core 1100
He's currently running Linux Mint because he wants to move away from MS
Disappointed in your low-end i5 cpu.
it's more sad then my cpu cooler and my nvidia 8800 gt 512 mb video card for my hackintosh but you know what my Hackintosh only cost me $745.43 to build and it will do everything I need it to do and I didn't get stuck with Apple's meme hardware and I can upgrade anytime I want plus plus I didn't spend $1,500 USD on top shit tier hardware like Apple has.
so far just the cooler and the video card are shit on my build but its just to get me by till I have more cash later on.
2500k fag here. It's still running at stock, should I get a new cpu for about 250$ or buy a nice cpu cooler and OC that 2500k and go for another year or more?
Noctua, Phanteks, thermalright
pretty much most of the coolers that looks like that
Before you buy any of them, check up on ram clearance, which is more important than 1-3c lower temps
I RLY like this boat~
>I hate the haswell lottery
>OC my 4670k
>can only get to 4.4ghz before unstable because I'm a fucking noob
>turn down to 4.2ghz and never touch it again
I'm too much of a pussy to crank my shit up or delid.
Going to get a new gpu to replace my 760 and some more RAM then forget about it for another 2 years.
