Oh damn, I loved that book.
Well, I don't WANT to have a central theme, that's even stated in the title. I want to provide lots of random information, my thoughts about anything that goes through my mind, spread out information.
It's what my mind is like and it's what I'd want to read as well.
But I guess many people prefer having a central theme to something.
Thanks for checking it out though.

Current system:

I'm thinking of getting:
- ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 for 95 euros
- AMD FX-4300, 3,8 for 80 euros
- 1x8Gb DDR3 for 40 euros
- Same video card because I'm poor as fuck

Am I overlooking something here? I feel like this would finally bring me back into somewhat modern times but I've been out of the upgrading game for so long I don't even know anymore.

If you can't see it clearly because of my shifty camera it has discoloration starting about half inch from the top of the screen downwards.

Yo, /g/. I've been in and out of here lately. I've lost a ton of data and managed to restore some of it. As of now I'm trying to restore my music library, and I was wondering if there's a program that allows me to see which folders in a directory have files in them and what size the files are. Seaching through each individual folder for the possibility of corrupted files is very time consuming.

Hi /g/, poorfag here, how could I cheaply upgrade my PC without having to not eat 4 months? many told me the graphic card should be enough for some years (is this true?) but what about the cpu?

thank you all in advanced.
>>
>>52248761
That whole thing is garbage. Literally none of it is salvageable. That CPU and GPU isn't even enough to emulate gameboy games, let alone real games.

The most important thing to start with is a new CPU/mobo/RAM/ PSU, then new GPU, HDD, etc.

>>
>>52248874
>is there a cheap way to get away with like only cpu or something?
Err there is but that means pooling your money into an obsolete CPU with minimal performance gains. It would be better if you just saved your money and did everything at the same time.

>>
>>52248874
The motherboard doesn't have to be expensive. The only expensive motherboards are the ones that come loaded with features(that most other boards also have). RAM is cheap(er). PSU is pretty essential, and you only have to upgrade that once or twice. If you don't have a lot of money right now, you may as well wait until you have a bit more to work with. Chances are your motherboard might not support many upgrades.

You're going to have a lot of problems ie bottlenecking from low RAM, but yes this is the best upgrade I'll recommend
>>
>>52249048
I got my Gigabye B85M-DS3H for about 40 bucks. It doesn't overclock or support SLI/Crossfire, but I can fit most upgrades on there. The motherboard is rather small, so just look out for that if you're planning on getting a heatsink/fan installed. Space can get tight.

What language would you guys recommend for simple file manipulation? I have a load of data from simulations, and I need to:

-rename them based on the structure and content of their file names.
-concatenate some of them into single files, with reference to a directory of other data files (primarily resumed simulations, so I check a directory if a simulation with the same parameters, found from the regular file names, exists, and, if so, check if the current object has resumed from the point that run stopped).
-generate gnuplot scripts for some of it
-possibly carry out simple analysis of some of the file contents, comparing between files, or generating new files (e.g., in a tab delimited data file, taking the 6th column from File A, and the 6th column from File B, and printing the difference between their values to File C).

I should be able to parse the filenames via regex, although their conventions are from years ago, and were not designed to be parse-able.

I don't have much experience with scripting/file management, and whilst I could write a more complete programme, I get the feeling pythony, ruby, or something similar might be a better choice - am I right in thinking this?

there isn't a problem really, I just don't need it and by the time I can actually use it (probably the summer), other options might be similar price

eg in the summer, a 390/390x might be $300, whereas a 290 will probably be $200 flat. if I sell my 290 for $250 right now, I can upgrade later or just get another 290 and save $50

I won't be using the 290 most of the time anyway so it seems like a waste

I'm not sure for the 950, for higher end cards you normally have adapters for 2*6-pin power to 1*8-pin, SLI bridges, and anything else you might need. I'm not sure if that applicable to 950s though.

Yes. My laptop used to last longer when I actually used it as a laptop. Nowadays it dies within 30 minutes and sometimes I get random percentages.

That's just anecdotal though. The only thing close to an official word I've seen is here http://www.wired.com/2013/09/laptop-battery which claims that the ideal charging cycle is 80% - 40% - 80%.

However, I remember someone posting a research paper here which showed that batteries will degrade over time on their own, and the damage caused by keeping it plugged in is not significant.

If you go looking you should be able to find plenty of 'kits', which allow you to compile derivative, custom, malware.

I'm not sure what you mean by trustable, pre-compiled malware will almost always try to botnet the computer you install it on, whilst providing you with the services you require.

I hope you have your 'hacked' PC as a VM, or in a suitably isolated DMZ, as it'll almost certainly try to send worms out over the network. Not fun if your PCs get infected, even less fun if the ISP notices, and thinks you're trying to infect the world.

Honestly, if you're asking here, you should probably spend some more time reading up (and learning how to write) malware, /g/ isn't really the community. There are some visible blackhat malware communities, and plenty white/grey hat malware/infosec communities.

What can I do to improve this?
>>

No/unlikely. Unless the graphics drivers offer a utility to do this (and change the GPU to a pass-through of some sort) you can't easily. Older laptops with VGA (analogue) input/outputs can be directly used as second monitors, with suitable drivers.

I seem to recall you can also use Macbooks as second monitors when connected to another device running OSX, although it might just be iMac->iMac.

If you're really interested in it, you can hack a solution, which would require you to remove the laptop screen, and solder in some sort of switch to the screen, either connecting to the laptop, or to a digital input - not sure how simple this would be (if possible at all).

If you don't mind a bit of latency you can set it up as a psuedo second screen over a network, there are some existing programmes for this, but I've never looked at them in any detail.
>>
>>52250689
Oh, I had it backwards. You're trying to connect it to the monitor alone? I'm not sure how that'll work.

Hello!

So I'm browsing porn and opening images in tabs as they load up. A few minutes go by, and I choose then to save the images to the Desktop, but they start download all over again as I do that. It seems that the browser, or server, or whatever else can only store the image for so long before it has to download it all over again.

I'm just wondering if someone can explain this to me.
What is it exactly that causes the image to re-download after a set time?
Can I change it?

Here's an example link!

Sorry.
I open a link containing an image in a new tab. The image loads, and then I choose to open another link containaing another image. I keep going and open ten tabs. Then I choose to download the first image in the first tab by dragging it to the desktop. Normally, dragging it to the Desktop would save it instantly presuming the image was loaded fully. But a few minutes have gone by since loading the image, and because of that, the image needs to be downloaded again.
I don't know why this is. Is the browser, or the website, or something else.

It's the exact same resolution. When the image is successfully downloaded, there's no problem.

What do you mean? No it's the same image as the one chosen to download.

So I found this old PC case in garbage.
It booted fine, but the issue is it have two optical drives.
When I press the eject button or use the eject command, the optic drive bay don't open, it makes sound as if it tries to open but it doesn't.
I can open it with pin though.
Can it be salvaged?
>>
>>52251360
Okay, really odd then, as you don't have to reload the page in order to see the image it's necessarily cached.

It's not a sadpanda thing, as I just checked on my side. Could it be a user script, that's using its own caching rather than the browser caching, so when the browser looks for a cached image it can't find one? If you have webcomic viewer, or another viewing addon installed disable it and see if the problem persists.

On a different note, since when did you have to wait 5 minutes to re-authorise your 4jew pass after changing networks/IPs? Really irritating.

>>52251477
Probably, take off the casing and see what the issue is. If you can't be bothered, give the drive a helping hand and pry it open a bit whilst telling it to eject, most likely just just friction, which a bit of oil will solve.

Yes.
To further explain it, I open a link containing an image and it loads up in a matter of seconds. The image doesn't go anywhere of course. It just stays there on the page. If it were to wait a few minutes and then drag it onto the desktop, it should save straight away as the image has been downloaded. But it re-downloads again - this time, onto the Desktop.

I can't explain it.
Have a look at my add-ons. Using Firefox v38.
>>
>>52251602
What about greasemonkey scripts, anything there that could be causing it? Say, something that precaches sequential pages into its own cache?

Otherwise see if the sadpanda thread on /a/ knows anything, weird issue.
>>
>>52251680
There's just the one greasemonkey script - 4chanX.
I'll try disabling it sometime in the next few days to check to see if it's the cause.
If not, I might try the sad-panda forums.
Cheers.
>>
>>52251602
What's the size of the cache? Is it even enabled?

Also, as usual, try with an empty profile and report back.
If it's working properly, it's most likely a problem with a preference in your profile.
>>
>>52251773
Wouldn't be 4chanX. Sadpanda forums are a shithole, check /a/ first, they do offer techhelp sometimes.

Double check your cache settings, see if it's set to flush frequently or something.

As:
>>52251776

Says, make a clean profile and see what happens.

Might even be worth making a clean install elsewhere on the drive, firefox installations can break in the oddest of ways.

Is Youtube video playback seriously this resource intensive?

My FX 8320 gets nearly as hot as when I'm playing muh vidya while playing a 1080p 60fps video.

Pic related is after about 30 minutes.

I don't really care about lifespan, everything is backed up and I can just replace the drive. It's 5 externals (2 in a 2-bay enclosure) here adding up to around 10TB storage so it's hard to replace them all with a single drive without spending a bunch.

>>

Porn is actually one of the only things I don't really compulsively hoard, honestly. Mostly because after I jack off to something a few times I usually am not that interested in revisiting it again, and I don't really generate a porn "backlog" the same way I would for movies or TV shows that would justify collecting it.

Aren't you kind of forced to lately with all the reliance on gameworks they're pushing? It's real bastard tier shit but as an AMD owner myself I often wish I got Nvidia so I wouldn't be shafted so hard every time a publisher does this.

No most likely not. I think speedfan has such a stresstest.

Is it safe to increase the memory clock of my gpu? What possible consequences are there?
>>
>>52254530
I have a few videos that I kind of go back to if I can't find something decent.

They're mostly shots of women pissing while fucking themselves with a dildo at the same time. It's rare and muh dick becomes diamonds every time.
There's also one video where a chick opens her pussy with a speculum, drops a raw egg in there and then pulls the speculum out while the egg is still in there.
I don't even know why, but I cum in seconds.
>>
>>52254530
But internet. Want to watch something just download it. Why hold it. Rare stuff, sure. But fucking 10 TB
>>
>>52254578
Do it slowly and and only after you've reached the maximum core speed.
GPU overclocking is always core speed first and then memory.

>What possible consequences are there?
Frying it sooner than without overclocking. That's always the consequence. Might not happen in years, though.
I've always overclocked my stuff and the last build worked fine for 7 years before I replaced it.
The one part that finally died on it was the PSU and not the overclocked stuff.
>>
>>52254610
A lot of it is stuff I haven't watched yet. I usually delete it after watching, but I tend to download a lot more stuff than I actually get around to watching, so it adds up.

Would you know what would indicate the maximum? I know to use a benchmark test, but what should I look for besides I guess crashing during the test? Should I keep GPU Tweak 2 Monitor open and just keep an eye on that or is there a more direct route?
>>
How can I stream files (videos) from my windows PC through my phone to my chromecast?
>>
>>52254722
Just keep an eye on the heat and obviously crashing.

If it starts to crash under stress testing, go 5% lower and that should be your maximum.

Also:
Furmark is not a reliable stress test because it loads the GPU with unreasonable amounts of work.

Also2:
There is not direct route. Overclocking to the max is always a long road with many setbacks.
Just make sure to take small steps and do it over and over again until you reach the ceiling.

Win7 or 8.1. I prefer 7, but that's just a personal thing. You can always debloat 8.1 and be fine, but it's a bit more work.

>>52254814 again

Don't overvolt if you're not experienced. Overvolting is where you really begin to get into the smelling burnt electronics area.

It's tempting because it will give you stable overclocks where your system crashed before, but it also might kill your stuff if you're not careful.

I have a sticker on my screen that tells me not to overvolt when I'm drunk, because I've done it before.. Imagine what happened..

Doesn't 10 have better battery life?
>>
>>52254866
I'm not sure m8, I'm just speculating the most possible reason.
Speedfan has a quick SMART test that shows the health status of your HDD without putting it under stress. I think it also has a heavy stress test.
Otherwise there are enough tools that put your HDD under heavy stress.

390, unless you find the 970 for much cheaper. No point in buying old gen, and 3.5GB may be a meme but if you have the choice to buy an equivalent card for the same price that does not suffer from this problem, you should.

I'm going to look into overclocking more; before I was just bumping it up a little, matched with the core speed and things seemed okay. I need more power out my 380X so I don't have to choose between slideshow mode or potato mode for Planetmans 2.

Mac Mini owners anyone? Preferably any who run Plex or any sort of media server on them?
Apple likely have some new mac minis coming out, pretty much want to have one running 24/7 for streaming locally. The lot on the Plex forums go on a lot about processing speed for transcoding, but most of my stuff I've already converted to h264 anyway. There are also a handful of refurbished 2014 i5 models which might be up to task. Wondering if anyone was doing a similar thing with them?

So im looking to upgrade my GPU and ram on my desktop. My motherboard can accept DDR3 ram and PCI express 1.0 cards, would it even be worth it to throw 16 gigs of ram and a GTX 970 on it or should i just give in and buy a new motherboard? I also have a 750 PSU but im not sure if I'd need a new one. Any suggestions?

My mom had her wallet stolen out of her purse when she wasn't paying attention at Whole Foods yesterday, she's been pretty broken up about it so I've been helping her get her stuff back in order, anything you guys would recommend besides the obvious? So far gone down the list and called every credit card/bank account she owns to have the cards issued (inconvenient as fuck, wish there was some "freeze everything" number you could call) and issued a fraud alert with Experian so they can't apply for any new credit in her name (though I don't think they got her social security card) went in for a new license at the DMV this morning, will need to apply for new insurance cards and whatnot soon as well but is there anything else we should be doing to minimize the impact of this?
