Dick Smith thread, share memories good and bad or post memes I don't give a fuck
Buy company in a bullshit way so you essentially put $10mil into it, specifically while it's all stocked up
Dump all the stock it has with big sales so the profit sheet looks fucking superb
This attracts investors, and you sell all your stock off
Company is left with no stock and no ability to repeat the initial profit
You get delicious, delicious money while the other investors get to suck a fat dick
Bought for $10M, stripped of anything worth while then offloaded to clueless shareholders (i.e your super fund) for $520M.
Once people caught on that the gold nugget they had purchased was actually a highly polished turd they dump their holdings, share price collapses, banks won't lend to fund inventory and DSE winds up insolvent.
Good work if you can get it.
>not buying all your electronics from harvey norman
Fuck you just hit me with some memories, wish I could find a clip of the JVC grand prize of the end of the year.
Tandy ;_; dam this thread.
I'm not going to give this Jew a single shekel.
>Gerry Harvey fucking annoys me and I'm not even sure why.
Fucking cunt is lobbying the government to introduce GST to all online purchases including overseas. It's currently Tax free if you buy shit that's under $1000 overseas.
Have a friend that worked there, he said they dropped the price of a few hd TV's that were 30"~ to like $50 not too long ago, keep an eye out if you're interested.
I will admit the quality of DS own brand TV's is pure shite but $50 is still a steal.
They've been shit for a while honestly.
But I'll always have a soft spot for them being one of the few large brick and mortar stores that sold high end smartphones unlocked for reasonable prices.
They did a fire-sale about a month ago on a heap of stock to try and save the company/keep the share price high enough for a few days so all the directors could get out. Everything decent disappeared on the first day it was on sale. Employees where buying shitloads of stock for themselves to sell at a profit later.
Not that anyone really minded since they'll be out of a job soon.
I remember Dick Smith's back in the 80's (yes I am that old) when it was a proper electronics shop. A shop for people who actually wanted to think and create.
Time sure has changed.
Thinking and creating is unaustralian. Buy a house, mate. you'll be rich and it's risk free!
when you charge 30% extra for your items you deserve to die.
these guys have had it coming for a long time. they are the tandy of the south pacific and should have learned from the tandy collapse but like jews they continued to screw their customers por quality overpriced crap.
good riddance dse.
Theyre unsecured creditors so they're last in the queue to get paid in the insolvency. That's why it's generally a bad idea to buy gift vouchers I think- shackled money that can be taken away with the company.
>Buy a house, mate.
>you'll be rich
At best you might be even due to the fact that every other property has risen by the same amount or greater.
>it's risk free!
no mortgage = risk free
lose job = lose house (possibly)
Just bought a LG smart TV worth $1200 for $720 there including 2 years extra warranty from Dick Smith(which has gone down the drain now due to Dick Smith dying ).
Great TV with great quality picture for the price paid, sad to see this store go :(
Haven't been to Dick Smith in years.
Last I went there, it was to pick up a 256MB flash drive and some LED multipacks, but they didn't have the latter anymore. Disgusting.
Jaycar is slowly turning into the same thing, but they always had more components in the first place, so it will take a lot longer.
JB Hifi is just a ripoff, don't even bother. Use pricespy for consumer shit and find that PBTech or Techworld are usually better bets.
>focus on technical components
>branch out into consumer electronics
>slowly remove specialist products from shelves
>becomes another tablet/laptop/tv store, indistinguishable from JBHIFI, Good Guys and Harvey Norman
>prices arent aren't good so no one chooses them over the competion
They had it coming.
>seriously bought an extended warranty
>from a company gone tits up
Spent my first couple paper run payments on a funway to electronics set.
Ruined my childhood at school, all the experiments/things we did with electronics up to the age of 16, I had done when I was 5.
Never buy Extended Warranty ever again, Australian consumer laws make them redundant, even Apple can't make up enough bullshit to make AppleCare seem better than what Australian Consumer Laws offer.
>$190 Bluetooth speaker
You do know you can buy beatspill clones on eBay for less than 30 dollars that have decent build quality and great sound quality.
I have one, it's branded five star and works great.
Pic related, but I got mine for $29.
So much this. About the only thing going for them was their selection of batteries.
And I know the real reason they died. My local DSE has a wall of ink cartridges.
No one buys ink cartridges.
Into the trash it goes.
Man I worked there as a Christmas casual once. It was alright.
Gotta go work at DS tomorrow.
Have always done the best I can for my customers with the resources we were given, but seriously... if someone wants to start shit with me tomorrow they're going to get it.
I'm owed ~$2000
>go into DSE today
>the tablet in their fitbit display was upsidedown
I'd have cared more if this were 10 years ago.
Also I'm still mad about the time they were selling Nintendo DSi consoles for $20 a pop:
I walked an hour to my nearest DSE on the day of a sale, getting up early, and they sold three to one cunt despite the purchase limit of 2. I was the last one to the counter and the only one to leave emptyhanded.
Oh and regarding all those bullshit "super sales" where the employees bought up all the stock to flip on eBay before the doors even opened.
My mother used to work for Sanyo before Panasonic bought them out in Aus. We've got so many fucking Eneloop batteries from my parents place, they power every battery operated thing in my home. Fucking aye.
I've been going there since I was a kid, got all sorts of electronics kits, general electrical bits and shit. When I stepped up from plain switches and wires to, say, resistors, my local store scrapped all their electronics stuff, spare some soldering irons. Kinda moved on to Jaycar/buying smd shit online then, but I always liked dick smith.
Got my last few laptops there, I shop there just for the sake of it at least being semi-Australian (or at least telling myself it is).
I feel like going to my local store and buying all the "dick smith" branded stuff I can get my hands on. Just so I have it.
How long till the shops start shutting?
The Dick Smith of today is not the Dick Smith you remember. It's been used by greedy faggots who purposely destroyed the business for short term gain before they jumped out.
>Ruined my childhood at school, all the experiments/things we did with electronics up to the age of 16, I had done when I was 5.
This, this a thousand times this.
>but seriously... if someone wants to start shit with me tomorrow they're going to get it.
Elaborate for us drunks.
Which store you work?
>using chink shit
>using clone chinkshit
No thanks, I have some shred of self respect, and good luck getting a replacement when that inevitably breaks. I'll be enjoying my Logitech UE Boom while you do that.
I thought it was a little weird that I was able to get a screen protector and iphone case for my sister for $1 each.
Talking to the guy there he said they had 1,000 in stock but didn't sell a single one until they reduced them.
I thought it was just that brand that was a dud for them.
Man after years of shopping there the last thing I will have ever now from them is Alien Isolation for $20 on PS4.
I will always like them for selling me a brand new Xperia Z for $599 when the next closest price was 800 though.
What is this, 2003?
JB or online.
Fucking woolies for cables I guess.
IT'S FUCKING HAPPENING
RIP in piece Dick. Least shitty retail and most fun retail job I ever had.
Actual electronics and hobby stuff you go to Jaycar or online, otherwise there's a heap of places for A/V shit. It's funny because when they pulled out of components the only local competition left was Jaycar. They would've been better off sticking with what they were good at.
I-it's said that for years now.
It's not coming soon, is it?
Boy am I glad you phrased that as exactly as you did
I hope no one starts with you, it's not your fault the suits have the IQ of a retarded 4 year old.
