Don't use GCC, use clang/LLVM. The debugger is also MUCH better and using LLVM will force you to stick to the C specs instead of using nested functions, VLAs (optional standard and being phased out!) and so on.

On windows GCC is much easier to set up and get running (for a newb)
on Linux I would most certainly use clang.
