This thread was created to prevent anons from spamming new threads, for technology questions they have.
If you are that person, post your simple/small/stupid questions here

Stop with this bump nonsense. You're more likely to get sarcasm if you bump, so just don't
There's a sticky with helpful information in it.
Fucking Google your question before you post it.

If you see other anons posting questions outside this thread, ignore or redirect them here
Use >>>/g/sqt as a link to find the sqt thread

Fuck when did /g/ become reddit, forget /flt/ or any other subreddit, I'm sorry I even tried. There's like 20 or more fucking generals/threads

Why would you say that? Is there less of a benefit from things like games using an SSD vs the OS as a whole?

Whatever one isn't used for the OS will likely be used for games and I'm guessing the newer one will also be bigger.

Which should I get?
>Vostro 5470 (i5 4th, 4GB, 500GB, 830M, 1.53Kg) base
>HP Pavilion 14 (i5 4th, 4GB, 500GB, 830M, 1.98Kg) -10% base
>HP Pavillion 14 (i7 4th 2C, 4GB, 1TB, 840M, 1,98Kg ) +18% base

My main concern is that I know HP had a lot of overheat problems in "old notebooks", and I don't if they fixed. For instance, Vostro has 2x blowers on back and HP only have one on left side. Thanks.

I have an idea for an app that seems like it would take a lot of work to create and maintain, but it's got a fairly straight forward revenue model. I personally don't have any of the technical skills required to start the thing.

Got a ThinkPad off eBay a while back and it came with Windows 7. I wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu on it. I built my first rig, bought an i5 4690 (non K) and a Hyper 212 EVO, right now I have one fan on it blowing air towards the back (exhaust) of the case. My temperatures reach 60C on max load which is well under the limit for the CPU but cooler is better and I recently bought a fan controller and already have more than enough spare 120 mm fans hanging around so I want to make use of my new toys.

What I'm wondering is seeing as how I have to manually control the fan myself (with the controller), what speed should I set the "pull" fan so that it doesn't encumber the fan already pushing? I can't imagine it would be good to have a second fan on there that doesn't spin fast enough and ends up stopping air from being pushed out.

Why are people so bothered by applications with "botnet" features? (Using the current /g/ definition of the term, not the actual one.)

I can understand if your privacy was being violated or if it hindered your experience in some way, but for example I saw people losing their shit about some Nintendo patent to use some distributed cloud computing scheme to make games run faster on a gaming console, as if this was some heinous crime. Where's the sense in that? Something I'm missing here, or is it just people trying too hard to apply memes every chance they get? Why do some CDs/DVDs still freeze the computer in 2016?

I never have these problems with usb flash drives

Huh, it might actually be a problem with the drive's firmware or something then, or maybe some DRM program that got installed in the background. I think I remember hearing about some particularly nasty old school DRM schemes doing this kind of thing in the past.

hi, /g/, the other day, the mouse that came with the living room computer died after a good 7 years of service. So I bought an ots mouse, thinking that there would be no problems left after that. However, now it won't work either. I've tried the mouse on other computers with no issue, and am now just cycling through resets by manually updating drivers through the device manager. Annoyingly enough, my logitech g700s works perfectly fine on the living room pc, but it's the only mouse I have for myself.

I need to buy a replacement power adapter for my laptop but I'm a bit confused by what I need.

The website lists the power adapter as
>65W (19V x 3.42A) Auto-sensing ,100-240V/50-60Hz AC Adapter
But on the back of the laptop next to the serial number and other info it says
>DC 19V - 2.37A

So what am I looking for exactly? I dont have the previous power adapter so I can't easily replace it.
>>
>>52238610

You can still rock DDR2 and play GTA V on high so there you go.
>>
>>52238856

the adapter has a higher wattage than what your laptop needs. 3.42A is pretty much standard for most laptops so no worries there.
>>
>>52238920
So this adapter would work fine?

not even going to look at your shit but just know this - for laptop chargers, the amperage has to be equal to or greater than the recommended value, and the voltage has to be exactly the same, even half a volt off runs the risk of fucking your battery or motherboard
>>
>>52239075
I might beef the cpu up a bit, not too sure, but the gpu is definitely fine
>>
>>52238989

Yes, basically it goes like this:

Voltage x Amperage = Wattage

Available Wattage > Required Wattage = Good to go

Available Wattage < Required Wattage = Won't power up, can fuck up older batts.

Line Voltage =! Required Voltage = SHIT GETS FUCKED UP

>>52239172
Wrong. 4160 here, running recent titles (GTAV, FC4, MGSV, etc) with no problems and nowhere near CPU limited.

>>52239075
I think 4170s are going cheap-ish just now so see if you can bump it up to that for a little extra clock speed. The difference from 3.4 to 3.7 isn't huge though.

Build, you can upgrade later. If you're planning to upgrade though you might want to get a beefier PSU. 550Ws shouldn't be that far away and will run a long way if you're not overclocking.

Also, why are you wasting $20 on a cooler for an i3? intel's stock is not *that* noisy and you definitely don't need extra cooling solutions for that CPU.

I was playing with gparted and bcd editing in windows just to learn how it works and ran into a problem. Heres what I did.

-Installed W7 64 bits on a clean disk, then resized the main partition.
-Installed W7 32 bits on some of the remaining adjacent space.
-From the 64bit and first OS I installed EasyBCD, moved the boot manager and bcd list from both OSes to the current main partition C: and marked it as active, making it the new system partition, after this I deleted the remaining and now useless System Reserved 100mb partition.
-I rebooted and both OSes booted fine.
-I booted ubuntu from a live usb and with gparted resized the partition next to the initial free space containing the 64 bit OS and both OSes boot files so it occupied the free space before it.

Now, I tried booting again and for some reason the 32 bit OS installed on the unedited and now 2nd partition booted fine but the first 64 bit one with the edited partition wont boot.

My question is how comes the 2nd OS loads fine but the first doesnt? Boot files are where they should be and the mbr record appears to be pointing to the correct place seeing as I can boot the 2nd OS, just not the first.

I could just try running a startup repair and get it working but id like some insight on why that happened. I read many pages about the windows boot process and there shouldnt be a reason for one os booting but not the other, if both crapped Id think its a corrupt mbr but it seems it isnt. Or is it that windows has some sort of hash/check of its current partition and refuses to work by simply modifying it?

I recently bought a brand new Radeon R9 290 (an upgrade from a dinky GTX 650 ti) and I'm getting these weird vertical/horizontal lines on random occasions, but only when I've either been gaming or watching youtube, strangely enough. The audio will either continue to play or stutter, but It's basically forcing me to hard restart (except for one time I had a youtube video playing, the screen appeared, I think I hit backspace on my keyboard and suddenly it started working again once the browser's page refereshed.

The weird part is, I've played only 10 minutes before it happened, or sometimes I manage several hours straight.

I tested my memory, just bought a new 750w PSU, and I even tried rolling back my display drivers.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped and I only know just enough to be clueless when shit hits the fan.

Yea, I figured. It's probably my RAM then, I've been having a bit of trouble with that. I had to turn the paging file off to avoid a bluescreen and the crash only ever occurs when I'm playing Dota 2 which puts my RAM at like 3.6 gb / 4 gb with no paging file
I'm also fairly sure it isn't overheating, it might have been before when it peaked at 82c but I fixed things so it now only peaks at 75c

also, it's not like it just restarts: it crashes completely, as if it got power cut, and then starts back up

why is it that every w7 vs w10 gaymen benchmark video in youtube shows w10 beating w7 in fps?

i though there was no difference between w7 and botnet unless the game was made with dx12...

what the fuck is going on /g/ did i fall for the w7 meme?

Why the fuck is the internet so much faster than local file technology?

Why the fuck am I able to download files at 115 MB/s but only copy them to another drive connected over SATA at 15 MB/s if I'm lucky?

w10 is more efficient. It's just the way it is. Get 8.1. No difference between 10 and 8.1

I'm afraid you are mistaken about what SATA is or you've configured something incorrectly.

Hey /sqt/ need some programming advice.

I'm porting my anime manager to Emacs. The thing is, Emacs doesn't seem to have any good SQLite bindings. The main problem with this means no prepared statements, meaning I need to do string sanitizing by hand. I'm trying to figure out the right approach to this.

1. Pipe input directly to SQLite subprocess. Need to sanitize strings by hand.
2. Use a foreign function interface to call SQLite's C bindings. Adds two extra dependencies and potentially unstable and unfun FFI play.
3. Outsource everything outright to a Python server process. The Emacs part basically becomes a super thin client that proxies input and output to/from the server process. Needs the server program as an extra dependency.
Ideas?

I got my first dmca for a porn of all things (torrent, public tracker). Not a warning from my isp about p2p but an actual warning because of a dmca by the porn group or their contacted lawyers or whatever.

How do they know? Do they join the seed pool and just issue dmca to anyone they find in there?

What should I do to protect myself now that they've warned me?

For the future I'll just stick to private trackers because now I just feel paranoid
>>
>>52243911
technically you can't trademark porn, you're fine. There's nothing they are going to do. If you need to, just change your ISP.
And in order to know YOU did that, a lawyer actually goes in, downloads it from said torrent site, finds your IP and sends it to who ever. In bit torrent or whatever, it shows everyone there, so he takes them all down and sends them to whatever ISP. legally, they can't prove anything from your IP address. Once you delete the torrent, they can't prove you didn't own a copy of it at some point. That is why you can get away with downloading DVDs from kickass. you're in the clear essentially anon.

So on your mobo there are 19 pins sticking out like in the pic and your front panel cable has 20 female ends, right? Can't you just plug in it? There's nothing physically stopping you right? Or does it not work when plugged it?
Your case is modern one, it should have the appropriate USB3.0 front panel cable to plug in.

>Your friend doesn't care and you know it.

Actually he plays CS:GO and is currently using something called the "blackweb mouse". After the new update he dropped to the lowest rank, and felt way discouraged for even playing and was considering selling all his skins and quitting. He says his budget is 100 dollars or less, but he said he has his eyes on the g300s, so I wanted to get him a mouse with a perfect sensor at that price (30 USD).

And, this "friend" is not me. I have a Deathadder. I heard the g100s was discontinued, but it's still 22 dollars or something and I told him he could go for that, but I wanted to confirm whether or not the mouse he wanted had a perfect sensor. Also, I know shit about sensors, so thanks for the reply, and info. Cheers.

They aren't as bad as /hpg/ will tell you, but they are overpriced; only get them if they're on sale.
Also, unless your really care about the colour of the logo you can't see while wearing them, get Classic instead of Chroma. Literally the exact same product but with a blue light.

So my new computers motherboard only has one port for a case fan, but the case I've got has one built in 120mm and spaces for two extra 120mm fans. I've found a 4 port hub for cheap but after talking to my slightly more tech-literate brother he's worried about drawing power for 3 fans through the one port. Will it be an issue? Or can I go ahead with buying it? The fans I'm looking at are Venturi HF-12s.

Is there a totally standard keyboard that /g/ recommends? I know the Logitech K120 is heavily recommend, but I want a keyboard without any keys being warped. Like a mechanical keyboard, but membrane. Need it for muh games. All standard-sized keys.
