I couldn't tell you the specifics, but I assume it's because image file formats note their length, and any image viewer will only read that much of the file. All of the data after that can be whatever you want it to.

Is there a guide for deflating windows in terms of disk space?? Xp could get really slim (1g) and still be able to run applications but I struggle with win7/8
