To this. Came out pretty good for a noob.

But now I need to deal with the server. Some old IT guy built it out of cheap parts almost ten years ago. Is there a /g/ guide to putting a simple file sever together? No real hardware demands but I want swappable HDs and a quiet case. Gonna be running Server 2012 Essentials.

I've never build an office server before. Only simple home stuff out of junk.

Nice job on the cleanup, should make it easier to trouble shoot.

I would look for a Dell r310 on ebay. Small and fast enough and pretty quiet for actual server hardware. I use one for testing and it runs great, raid 10 and 16 Gb runs a few hyper-v system just fine.

That's way overkill for this. They literally just use it as a server for Office documents, plus running some kind of membership database program.

It sits out in the open so I'm trying to go for nearly silent. I was thinking of some kind of mini ITX build.

maybe a pi would work for this

I think the HP Microserver G8 might be the best fit. It's small and takes 4 drives.

Also, look into scripting the 2012 essentials installation. It's easy enough, with a combination of autounattend.xml and cfg.ini.

Some other things to keep in mind - Are you flattening the AD domain? Do they even have one? Do you know what you need to migrate? User accounts? Shares? Any O365 tie in?

Stay away from the Dell R (R310, R610, etc) as they're rack mount. The T410/420's are nice, but may be a bit more than needed.

Why not just buy a new HP microserver? if its just handling file/print then even that is going to be over kill. Plus its going to have warranty and all the good stuff. Plus you'll get your hot swappable drives.
>>
>>45931561
You asked for swappable disks and then turn down a cheap server. Just use 3 disks, boot, data, backup. Run backup daily.
>>
>>45931648
dafuq? 3 independent spindles? To run an office?

What is... NO!

Backup or not, loosing a drive isn't an option...

And I'm not even OP.
>>
What rack are you using there OP?

Literally the best option for you.
>>
>>45931648
This is probably the best option.

OP asked for a server, but that quickly turned into a regular cheap and quiet office PC. Use an external HDD (maybe with eSATA) or a standard 5.25" HDD swap case.

i agree, used to have one of these.
They are reliable, cheap and if he is on a budget (alto they are already the budget option), ebay and craigslist should have a few cheap used ones.
>>
>>45931767
fuck just buy a new one with warranty. that are cheap enough as it is.
>>
>>45931204
>server 2012
yeah good one
>>
>>45931998
true, especially if not nonly the g8 but also g7 are in the picture...
>>
Look into special deals from OEMs for nonprofits on hardware and software.
>>
>>45931159
okay andrew
>>
>>45931591
They have no particular software needs. For their uses an NAS would work if they didn't have this database software.

>>45931707
Whatever was $40 on Amazon. It's a little light but it's fine for network hardware.
