What is the linux distro and why is it Red Star 3?
Daily reminder you're not using Best Korea's OS, running on Linux and modelled like Mac.

Willingly join Best Korea botnet? No thanks.
>>45864506
>A dictatorship using Linux
So much irony here...
They must have had the Chinese produce it for them
>>45864506
Good, they're still copying american ui design.
>>45864506
>KDE desktop
>mimicked Windows
>based on Linux, the open-source operating system originally developed by Linus Torvalds
>apps
2GB's?
Wow, well here I go
>>45864629
Apparently even windows 8 also dumped windows interface.
>>45864506
The Korean they use in the os is really old school there are almost no borrowed english words used
>>45864703
are you korean/do you know korean?
>oldschool
Is that the way they speak in north korea or you're saying they're purposely avoiding certain words?
>>45865062
Our dear leader probably refused to allow capitalist American pig words in His perfect operating system
>>45864606
>communists using GNU/Linux
no surprises there.
>>45865199
Apparently Kim Jong Un uses a Mac
someone find out what the font rendering is like
is it shit like linux or god tier like mac
the new osx lion+ login screen is probably too hard for them
he's probably in a prison camp now :[
So wait, most of you fuckers won't use Windows or Mac OS because it's "probably" backdoored, but you have no problem trusting an OS made by the North Korean government?
This is so rediculously mac like it's insane
If someone changed the language to english and got rid of the inevitable spy software on there it might actually be decent
I'm impressed
>>45865697
If I know I'm being watched by the North Korea government it means I'm probably not being watched by the NSA.
>>45865755
> trusting North Korea at all
> not using a Stallman approved free software distro like GNewSense or Trisquel
Trying to figure out if there's a hidden admin account for government officials, but it's hard with the korean, and the account it creates in the installer doesn't have sudo privileges
>>45865743
Shame it isn't free software
>>45865855
only great leader has such privileges swine!
Are they distributing the source somewhere or is this a GPL violation?
>inb4 the FSF takes on Best Korea.
fuck ye
>>45865901
Interested in this too

They aren't even developing this anymore. Retard.
(I only know because I came here with pretty much the same thread a few weeks ago, but the article I referenced was new, not a year old)
Kek, there are the TempleOS threads and the RedStar threads that seem to provide endless shitposting and very little humor.
>>45865901
The fuck is the FSF going to do? Run a black op mission on NK soil?
>>45865755
post of the year
Honestly looks like a better OS X clone than shit like elementary.
>>45866089
>You will never go on a mission with Stallman to free the people of North Korea from their camps and their proprietary software
>>45866140
this
>>45865972
How do you change the language?
Download link is 404. Please update.
>>45866166
Edit /etc/sysconfig/i18n and /usr/share/config/kdeglobals, change ko_KP to en_US.
I had to use a live CD of another distro to change them though, because dear leader doesn't let you have sudo privileges
>>45866184
Still works for me. But here's a magent link

>Like the previous version of Red Star, the latest version 3.0 includes Wine. That’s a package that allows Windows software to be run under Linux.
>The App folder structure also follows a mac structure, eg. the text editor lives at
>/Applications/SimpleText.app/Contents/RedStar/simpletext
North Korea created the best linux distro ever and no one uses it.
There has to be some way to recreate this without the botnet.
>>45866213
>mac clone
>best ever linux distro
Linus fags should just give up if that's the case.
>>45866213
They really need to pretty it up though. The Elementary OS guys should be taking notes.
Another: http://www.openingupnorthkorea.com/downloads-2
>>45866213
As expected from the best.
>>45866219
Apple has the best UI design in computing.
They're logical, easy to use while still being relatively flexible, consistent and nice looking.
Linux and Windows don't have that.
Android 5.0 and Windows Phone are pretty much the only other OSes that can say they achieve all of that, but they're phone OSes.
>>45866246
more like it has more effort put in because the people making it don't want to die
>>45866271
Someone whos life actually depends on it in a more immediate sense would probably always do their best.
>>45866271
>yfw the north koreans have cloned Stallman
hm
>>45866360
oh, and securityd is running? but this is linux not OSX. Good one kim.
>>45865199
>implying north korea is communist
They've completely removed all references to communism from their constitution over the years
Why would this have drop box?
>>45866601
Drop Box != Dropbox
>>45866601
A drop box is a directory that's world-writable but not world-readable, and has the sticky bit set.
It's for people to drop in files for you. Like a mail slot in your door.
http://media.ccc.de/browse/congress/2014/31c3_-_6253_-_en_-_saal_2_-_201412292115_-_computer_science_in_the_dprk_-_will_scott.html
This is a talk about a guy who taught CS in NK for a while.
The students used windows xp mostly. They don't use redstarOS as a daily driver- it's produced by KCC which is more about industrial computing, and redstarOS is given to industries with controllers and they do their programmy things with it in that situation.
Most people in NK use windows though, mainly because that's what cheap chinky computers are sold with.
ARM devices are android though.
Booted into a live CD, chrooted into red star to reset the root password so I could use sudo, and now I can't log in to the normal account.
I doubt there's a way to fix it. Oh well. Looks like only kim can sudo for now.
>>45866895
Ask will scott how he did it.
root access gives you access to NK disk encryption software
>>45866760
How the fuck do I get rid of the german over the top of it
>>45866916
Download the english one?
>>45866895
Looks like
Kim's honeydicking you
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>45866147
Because it'll never happen, given that Stallman is probably a great leader supporter.
>>45866147
Camps? The camps are okay so long as they don't allow the people there to use proprietary software.
>>45866905
probably added himself to the sudoers file, rather than resetting the root password
i should have done that in hindsight
Bump. I'm curious what applications/themes/packages they stole/used to make it behave this way. Is GTK even present anywhere or does it look like ass on there?
top kek, gonna try this botnet
>>45869011
It's one of the only operating systems on the planet that you know isn't backdoored by the NSA. Well okay that isn't completely true- it might contain backdoors that were put in OS X and just not picked up by NK's expert programmers.
>>45869045
> implying there are no DPRK botnets
Use Trisquel if you're so worried about that.
>>45869190
If you read my post more carefully, you'll see that I wasn't implying at all that there weren't any DPRK botnets.
You get that when I say explicitly that it isn't backdoored by the NSA.
>>45865199
Actually they use Linux to spy on their people, ironic because everyone says its used to prevent spying...
>>45869469
They take free software and repurpose it into a botnet. Google did the same thing to make Android and ChromeOS.
>>45869302
>You get that when I say explicitly that it isn't backdoored by the NSA.
You are assuming that because of its source, but you don't have PROOF for your assertion.
>>45869621
That's what the next part of the post is for, when I say:
>Well okay that isn't completely true
>>45866381
Don't try to explain that. Americans, in 2015, actually believe in creationism, citizen surveillance and counter-terrorism, And that Obama is socialist
>>45866213
>implying there is a botnet
That botnet would have to connect to DPRK servers, anyway
So I just noticed the os contacting an ip in China, I think it's a keylogger. Going to try and find out more
>>45870085
That's interesting, do tell us if you find anything interesting.
>>45870102
bumping for interest
>>45866360
There is no Stallman. All that you have seen attributed to this Stallman persona is really the life work of Kim Jong Un. He is all of our champion, the true embodiment of Freedom itself.
>>45870085
I was hoping that the botnet only worked in DPRK
"Best Koreas Linux distro"
Top kek :^) no thanks op, I'll stick to elementary os
I don't like this "best Korea" meme. Korea is a pretty terrible place, but NK isn't the "best" at anything.
>>45869699
>not believing in a Creator
>actually being foolish enough to think everything as it exists is just some cosmic accident
Blind leading the blind.
>>45864506
Thanks op I haver server edition redstar 3. Which doesnt have the full mac look..
Interested in this. Is the Install still a bitch or is it gui? The server edt sucked deciphering that moon language
>>45864506
>North Korea uses Linux
GNU/Fags, need I say more?
>>45871601
It's the best at brainwashing a population.
Even better than the US.
>>45869699
>Conservatives, in 2015, actually believe in creationism, citizen surveillance and counter-terrorism, and that Obama is socialist
FTFY
>>45871622
>believing in things with absolutely 0 supporting evidence
Even if you were right you belief is still based on completely unsupported fantasy.
>>45866360
>>45865972
>KDE
Well, we know that KDE can be made not shit somehow, at least.
>>45865755
>If I know I'm being watched by the North Korea government it means I'm probably not being watched by the NSA.
Thanks for the new pasta anon
