I never use the clit thing in the middle of the keyboard. When would it be a better option than the touchpad. the fuck is this thing for?

All the time, the question should be when is a touchpad better than the clit?

If you can power the internal monitor, then can you also power an external monitor via the dock/ultrabase or through the VGA/DisplayPort ports on the laptop, and still get the Nvidia graphics?
>>
Anyone else have an issue with audio just stopping working? It fixes itself when I disable and re-enable the speakers in the audio devices panel, but it's kind of annoying to have to do that.

That and the dead pixels on my screen are the only problems I'm having with my T420.

I like mine. CPU is soldered so get fastest you can afford. A small SSD is an inexpensive and excellent upgrade since spinner drive is bottleneck.

Arctic Silver works fine. I've done ~14 Pads with it. Link us to the sale thread when they go up.

Also, if you can flash them with a no-whitelist BIOS they are more desirable. I make a boot CD (USB works too) and install Middleton without a hard disk.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/459591-t61-x61-sata-ii-1-5-gb-s-cap-willing-pay-solution-8.html#post6501443
>>
>>45840854
Get the SSD!

Old spinner notebook drives suck. Fast recent spinners are better, but pointless since SSDs are cheap. If you have Ultrabay caddy put spinner there. Also flash Middleton BIOS for full T61 SATA speed.
>>
>>45840922
WIn8 works fine on my test T61 with 2GB and an SSD. Internal WLAN on T61 not supported though. I didn't bother fiddling with the driver since I mostly run Linux or Win7 on them. Later supported WLAN adapters are cheap on Ebay and easy to install. See Thinkpad Forums if you care.

Of course Linux support is fine.

I live in Brazil and I'll be selling them for 200 BRL each (got them for free) and that's below the market price, I don't wanna be too jewish. I've got 53 working Thinkpads, some twelve with the odd problem.

> tfw was driving past and saw a literal pile of Thinkpads on a dumpster

What variant of Artic Silver should I use? Or are they mostly the same?

They get hot pretty quickly, even with nothing there. And it's slower than native USB 3.0

If you've got a lot of money to blow and a spare PSU/GPU, you can get a eGPU setup.
>>
So I'm deciding on whether to pick up a cheap ultraportable, I'm in the UK so prices are more expensive over here.

I've narrowed it down to either the X201 or X220.

Which one offers the most bang for buck?

Seems like the X201 is more of a 'classic' model than the X220 but it's slower and battery life is worse.
>>
>>45840247
On a semi-related note, which thinkpads come without a touchpad? I have an X200 and don't need that shit.

I'm just wondering what my options are.
>>
>>45843774
Performance jump to Sandy Bridge is pretty significant.

It can also take mSATA SSD's, 16GB of RAM (if you need it..), and the i7 models have USB 3.0.
>>
>>45843778
The X200 was the last one without a touchpad, though you can fit the X200 palmrest on a X201.

Usually a case of you get what you pay for. A lot of the cheaper ones won't explode, but you'll generally get less than advertised. Otherwise, some like to degrade quickly. The overall value would be about the same since you could buy multiple (but at that point, might as well just buy the lenovo one. ebay prices for them are obviously better than from lenovo in which case try your luck).

Whats a good price for a new and original 9 cell battery for a good t400?
>>
>>45846018
Despite how this website looks, it is legit and have nearly everything for good prices. You just need the model number of the display.

http://www.laptopscreen.com/

Also, when upgrading from 1366x768 to 1600x900 on T420's, you also have to replace the LCD cable, which you can find on Ebay for $20 or so.

Also if you want to experiment with a bigger upgrade, you could consider trying this;

Ah excellent. I had looked at that article too, but fucking around with the cable as he mentioned there doesn't sound particularly appealing to me, so I figured I'd settle for the smaller/cheaper upgrade.

Picked up a Thinkpad 755C today for free, along with the Thinkpad Dock II (It's fucking huge), the only thing missing was the thinkpad's power adapter, but it powers on just fine through the dock.

The specs are the Intel 486DX4 @ 75 MHz, 16MB DRAM, and the 340MB IBM HDD. The machine itself is in great shape, a few scratches and marks on the lid, but it's really well kept. There's some rust on some of the connectors on the dock, but the connectors on the thinkpad are spotless.

This'll be a restoration project for me, seeing about getting a new battery, cleaning up the keyboard and internals, seeing if I can source a 100MHz CPU, and cleaning up the Dock II. Let it be known: the keyboard on this thing is the absolute sex. It's amazing.

If you are going to use Linux at least use a distro that doesn't spy on you.
>>
did I fuck up /g/?
>x220
>$550

>>
>>45849477
Unless the first 5 in $550 was a typo, then yes.
>>
>>45849477
You spent too much, yes. Unless it had a 1TB SSD or something. But it is a good machine.
>>
>>45849477
You could of bought two of that price, Christ.
>>

I don't think you know what you're doing

To T420 owners, what's your idle temp?
>>
>>45849448
does mint spy on you?

I shouldn't have any hardware issues switching to a linux distro right? like my wifi and everything?
>>
>>45849534
As far as I know Mint does not, but I don't fuck with distros other than Xubuntu, so I'm not super knowledgable on the details.

my friend got the tablet version for half that price

Moron.

Or you know, just install Ubuntu minimal with whatever the hell you want.
>>
>>45849607
so ubuntu without the amazon thing doesn't spy on you?
>>
>>45849523
Depends on ambient temps, but 40-45C.

If by idle you mean light usage, 4channing and music, etc. It'll be more like 50C~
>>
>>45849613
No it doesn't. It's not that big of a deal anyway, they never sent any of the info to anyone but canonical, the parent company of Ubuntu, and it never contained personal information anyway just anonymous search data.
>>
>>45849632
And they got rid of it when their users complained that they didn't like it.
>>
Just got my x220t today, this thing is great. Just wondering what you guys to configure WiFi networks in Linux (debian). I use dwm and never really had to bother with this on my desktop.

Christ, he must be running very low on space. My Windows folder alone is 16.8GB.

Plenty of space for a OS that respects your freedoms though.
>>
alright so i just got a t420 as my first thinkpad an it's pretty awesome for the price i bought it at.
Almost everything seems to run fine apart from the fan, which is constantly rattling and is really annoying. it doesn't seem to effect temps to much, 42 degrees with a webpage open.

so /g/ is the fan likely to die on me if i put the cpu and gpu (I have the version with nvs4200) under signifiant load? or is it just going to be annoying for the rest of the time i use this laptop.
on that note how hard is it to replace the fan/can someone link a guide
>>
>>45850539
If temps are that low (T420s tend to run pretty hot), it's more likely than not just your fan.

Search Lenovo's site for a service manual, they're pretty complete.
>>
>>45850296
He is. I run on 128 GB one. But yeah, it's pretty bad for him. He only uses this pc for webbrowsing tho. That and skype, maybe some writing from time to time.
I set up a homeserver for him so he doesn't really need much space. Also whole setup was dirtcheap and works like a dream.
>>
Ah. Sounds reasonable then.

I'll probably keep my trusty ol' X200 Tablet for a while. 8GB of RAM and the 120GB SSD make it faster than sanic despite the low voltage C2D.
>>
>install Xubuntu on X61t instead of ElementaryOS because eOS doesn't just werk

t420 here.

cpu goes up to 68-70°C when watching chinese cartoons with mpc-hc.
is it an okay temp?

no, it's not.
>>

I will on my linux partition.
does mpv perform well on windows too?
does it pull tons of libraries to install?
I need windows for work software and I am lazy to reboot everytime to watch videos so I installed KCP for now.
>>
So what do you guys think of thinkspot(dot)de?

I am buying a thinkpad next month here in yurop and yeah...they seem to be more expensive..

Any hints for some yuro buys?
>>
yuropoor here,

where can i get a cheap T420, except ebay?

and how hard is it to switch the display? thinking of buying a cheap 1366x768 one and upgrade it to 1600x900 later
>>
>>45852245
define cheap.
250-300€ is a daily occurence on european ebays.
even with 1600x900.
>>
>>45851901
mpv works well on windows

now delete the Linux communist virus
>>
Why is Realtek driver support so shit in Linux? Upgraded to kernel 3.16 and couldn't hold a wireless connection for over 20 seconds. Tweaking power settings did nothing. Gave up and got an Intel 6205 for $20 and swapped the fucker out.

Word of advice to prospective X220 buyers: stay away from "Thinkpad Wireless LAN" adapters. They're all filthy Realtek.

What's a better eBay strategy? Scan for listings for single units that are taking bids or just find a seller selling a ton of them at a single buy-it-now price? Looking at this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T420-4180-WND-14-WXGA-2-50GHz-CORE-i5-2520M-4GB-320GB-/251714824564

Is the T420 worth $250 or should I spend time scanning for a better deal? No I can't make decisions for myself.

there are cards for usb, firewire, ethernet, wireless, serial and some other stuff. new laptops wont benefit that much from such an extension since most of these interfaces are already present anyway.

Is the T420 the most commonly owned ThinkPad among /g/? I see it mentioned a lot more often than other tp's.

That's because most of /g/ consider the T420 as the last true ThinkPad. It's not, though, since it is 16:9.

What should the battery life be like on a t420 with a 3 year old, 6 cell lenovo battery, i5 processor and a fat neckbeard at the helm who uses his thinkpad to browse 4chan, watch youtube videos and download a bunch of files?

I mostly have the brightness way down at 2-6 with the "maximum battery life" profile on the battery manager , and i get 3 hours tops. Is this because the battery is fucked or because browsing the internet and streaming video uses a shit ton of power?

That will run 7, 8.1 or any Linux distro. You can install Rufus then try different OS on a USB flash drive too. Much potential enjoyment.

All the bot shit is twelve-year-olds memeing. The only place for a twelve-year-old is bleeding on deenda maddick. Nobody cares what you do as an individual unless your metadata trips the NSA and they don't need to be on your PC because they control the internet.

Mint can be had in various flavors and is an ideal distro to use while getting comfy. You can play with many distros. Distro choice isn't marriage.

Don't use the slider thing on the Power Manager. Click Advanced at the top right and adjust it yourself.

Also while in Advanced mode, go to the Battery tab. Compare the "Full charge capacity" to "Design capacity". That'll tell you the condition of your battery.

>streaming video uses a shit ton of power?
This does if it has a high bitrate, just open the task manager and see how much CPU you're using...
>>
>>45855930
The fact of the matter is that 1600x900 of the T420 is more than 1440x900 of the T410 and T400 and thus better.

You aren't getting anymore "workspace" or whatever out of a 16:10 display.

Yes, on a practical way it doesn't matter, but this is what the Free World has become. Somewhere in hell, Stalin smiles.
