I vow to finally use several boxes of parts, new and quality pulls, to build two new systems and overhaul two more.

Before April.

I would only need to buy trivial support parts (like a couple fans, a cooling block, thermal paste). Everything else is sitting there most of a year waiting for me to have time. Cases, mobos, RAM, hard drives & SSDs, etc. Could have a Phenom II Deneb 975 running by 10 Jan if nothing comes up. Could overhaul a Core 2 Quad 3 GHz machine, which needs some case mods in addition to RAM and a PCIe USB 3.0 card.

Etc.

2ndary achievement unlock: functional *BSD desktop environment to play & learn with. Haven't touched a BSD install in almost 10 years and want very much to see how evolved the modern ones have become. Hard Mode: PC-BSD looks very entertaining. The Core 2 Quad mentioned above with 4 GB DDR2 RAM and an SSD plus old GTX 460 GPU should rock a BSD hard & awesome.

Tired of my job, gonna just make an app or something and live off the ad revenue for the rest of my life.

I think these selfie-"narrative" photos (ie whether it's a picture of your body or of your room or whatever) serve to remind people to make themselves public. How they interpret that is up to them (I've seen some people relish in the disaster that is their room) but it's not altogether surprising that on a non-normative site like 4chan people take the "public" cue and go the "other" way with it. For the most part, battlestation and bedroom threads are the only things keeping people on /g/ from letting their homes, desk spaces, etc... from going completely off the rails.

The point is that the Pi is specifically designed to be a teaching device and that there are many resources designed for the Pi to actually make use of the Pi. Yes, anybody can learn programming on a x86 laptop, but you're not likely to make use of this computer's many features without some CS/EE graduate to guide your instruction. The Pi architecture is simple enough that the learning materials are small enough to guide you through the features of the Pi.

Also, there is no need to type anything or compile anything on the Pi itself. You can use a high powered desktop machine for the coding and compiling and then transfer the binary code to the Pi.

I think your imagination is too small to see the value of the Pi. The Pi is actually cheap enough that it's actually feasible to buy enough Pi for a class of 30 students for the students to muck about on and then keep after class. When you're writing software for the x86 machine in a school computer lab, these tend to be locked down. A personal Pi means you can mess up the software of the Pi as much as you want as you explore the depths of an unrestricted Pi.
