Go compare it (k-lite or CCCP) side by side with VLC. Seriously, do it.
Find your favorite anime, preferably a decent BD rip, and pause at random places at the same time in both players, side by side. It is so blatantly obvious.
VLC mangles the image, and can't reproduce decent coloring.

Windows users are clueless plebs. It's mostly placebo.

MPC:HC "properly set up" will do the exact same as MPV right out of the box. There's no difference.

So go with the simpler, lighter program. MPV plays huge bitrate files full speed on my shitty laptop. MPC:HC lags on it.

>>

You won't notice as much improvement with already bitrate-starved re-encodes, beyond enhancing their artifacts.

mpv is mainly recommended for its colorspace conversions, scaling, and other renderer aspects.

I think MadVR looks ever so slightly better, and is more configurable, personally. But when you start getting into this upper end, you reach a point of diminishing returns. mpv's main advantage is that it provides the same high quality processing and output, while being much lighter on resource usage. Also runs on most OS.

I read back my own words and sound like a marketer. That's a clear sign of retarded (literally, suppressed) neurological function, as far as wider branching awareness. Oughta just kill myself one of these days.

madVR's main advantage these days is that it has stuff like NNEDI3, jinc, flash3kyuu or whatever cancer built-in by default.

If somebody would care about having any of those in mpv, it would help if you filed an issue with the specifics of the algorithm you want. So far, nobody seems to have really cared.

madVR's main /disadvantage/, of course, is that it's 1. closed source, 2. the author has said he might charge in the future, 3. it only works with DirectShow (the cancer of all media APIs), and by virtue of that, Windows (the cancer of all operating systems)

And this is taken with mpv. I just used the built in screenshot functions, obviously. Don't feel like printscreening.

They're quite similar. If you were to compare them directly, most differences showing up would be dither patterns, differences between spline and jinc for chroma upsampling, etc.

>>45800061
All advantages are potentially a disadvantage, when viewed in the right context. Most of em, anyway. NNEDI3, while being a good neural network based interpolator, and being great at diagonal hard edges, often produce an output that too synthetic. As far as I'm concerned, unless you have a top of the line card, it's better off just being used as a field-based interpolator, for video editing. (Orphaned fields, etc). That's just me. It runs poorly on the highest neuron count, so maybe I haven't been able to test properly, and maybe I'm too used to jinc.

I'm not sure why you're complaining about having a built-in debanding algorithm, that can easily be switched on and off with hotkeys. It'd be nice to have a good realtime, shape adaptive, deblocking algorithm as well. Something that is passed information about the source format's compression settings, and can make assumptions based on that. Or would that be cancer as well?

MadVR beingclosed source is unfortunate, but the guy can do whatever he wants to with his project. It's not hard to understand non-malicious reasons someone would prefer this way of working on something. It isn't the future yet, so people can start ditching it when or if that actually happens. People run Windows, people will use good renderers for Windows. What is your point here? The world won't always, or honestly, won't ever truly work how you see as intelligent or ideal. I suggest you get used to that, and slowly go mad internally.

These two files should look identical:

709_2020c.mkv
709_2020nc.mkv

Ideally, both should also look identical to 709_709.mkv but that's probably just the case if you have color management enabled.

The other files are less important (2020_2020c and 2020_2020nc should also look identical, and 2020_709 should look fucked up no matter what)

Close enough. mpv has no function to seek to an exact frame, and I don't feel like screwing around with it. Has generally all the same composition, and illustrates the point.
>>
>>45800398
Probably because the file isn't tagged correctly. Not your fault, almost nothing on the internet is, and most programs won't tag by default.

The unfortunate implication is that, out of practical necessity, modern video programs have all ended up guessing the colormatrix based on resolution - 720p and other HD resolutions get mapped to BT.709, and anything below that (SD) gets mapped to Bt.601.

So if your file isn't tagged correctly, the downscaled content will get interpreted as BT.601, even though it's technically still the same content (which should be BT.709).

Converting from BT.709 to BT.601 manually fixes it.
Tagging the file with BT.709 would probably also fix it.

Try playing both versions (large and small) using mpv --colormatrix=BT.709 and seeing if they match up.

CONFIGURATION FILES

You can put all of the options in configuration files which will be
read every time mpv is run. The system-wide configuration file
'mpv.conf' is in your configuration directory (/etc/mpv), the user-spe‐
cific one is ~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf. User-specific options override
system-wide options and options given on the command line override
either. The syntax of the configuration files is option=<value>; every‐
thing after a # is considered a comment. Options that work without val‐
ues can be enabled by setting them to yes and disabled by setting them
to no. Even suboptions can be specified in this way.

Human perception is typically more sensitive to brightness than color. If you were to compare them by their exact RGB values, a large number of pixels would be very different. Probably with many around hard or contrasting edges. I don't have the program to do those direct comparisons, if anyone has something viable, feel free.

Point remains though, at the upper end, you hit a point of diminishing returns. Typically, there's little perceptible difference unless you study the two, and then study them in motion.

Noise like this is much more likely to have come from dithering, which literally adds noise.

I think madVR should dither by default. mpv only dithers if dither-depth is set (which it really ought to be, I'm surprised opengl-hq doesn't have this by default).

I was lucky enough to get some IPS panels from Korea when they were cheap and it has no backlight bleed or dead pixels. Next year will be good for monitors too Freesync and maybe even better refresh rate monitors

VLC.
All the issues with VLC that people regularly complain about were fix years ago and/or are only present on Windows.

MPV is laggy trash that over-saturates everything, barely has a GUI, and has no where near the feature set of VLC.

MPC-HC

Now you're not even trying

MPV is literally the only video player in existence that has correct color management and rendering.

>>

MPC-HC: View --> Renderer Settings --> Color Management --> Enable
>>
>>45801480
Hahahaha oh right, I forgot they added their shitty excuse for CMS to EVR CP. (which also doesn't come close to madVR in terms of IQ, btw, which is what you SHOULD be using mpc-hc with)

Regardless, there is one point I absolutely cannot lose on, no matter what:

BT.2020 support

Every player other than mpv will get it wrong.

VLC used to have a lot of issues with rendering, dealing with different fonts for subs, banding, and it always looked really saturated.

It doesn't have those issues anymore, I think. But it's still bloated and inferior at 1080p to madVR and LAV filters.

Or get KCP, an optimized MPC-HC for anime.

If you want the custom osc copy this https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/player/lua/osc.lua to ~/.mpv/scripts/ and change line 31 to layout = "slimbox" and r=0 in line 876

Copy the rest from here or change them as you see fit, you can see the line numbers in pic related
