Basically they lost their shit trying tou kill Nvidia while Nvidia sat back and kek'd.

3dfx's business model was shit also. instead of releasing 1 top shelf card and a few budget cards, they released 1 top shelf card and that was it. meaning if you wanted a 3dfx card, you had to pay a bunch of money, while nvidia had a ton of budget-tier cards for only slightly less performance.

Basically 3dfx put all its eggs in one basket with each release.

I remember when new Pcs and equipment came with a pretty heavy operation manual, and you were required to know shit about computers before you started.

Now it seems they are more powerful, and made for a simple minded users, so it is possible to use tech despite being tech illiterate. That, in my opinion, only made the gap between the average users, and a computer expert much more wider to the point it resembles the grand canyon.
>>
>>45791165

it has certainly introduced people to computers who have zero business being around them in the first place.

is there any reason, any at all to ever use dial up again?

>other than power outage given the phone lines always on.
>>
>>45791386

Rural areas.
I set up dial-up for a family member in Montana recently.
The only other option was satellite which was out of his price range and had too high of a ping rate.
>>
>>45791434
What's the max speed a dial-up connection can have?

Good game. My gf loves it
>>
>>45791520

He's using a 56 kbps (kilobits per second) modem but he's getting only 42 kbps on average.
Some dial-up providers offer page-caching services that help a lot and I think it's possible to combine multiple dial-up lines for greater speed. I'm not sure what the max possible speed for dial-up is though.
>>
>>45791520
the max you can connect at is 53.3
this is set by the FCC (in the US, dunno about other countries)
unless the line you are using is in pristine condition, then you might get 56.

but the reason for this is any faster, and you start affecting actual voice communication

You could combine dialup lines when available, which wasn't common for residential use.
Download managers were vital. When I was in Korea in 1999 Kunsan AB only had dialup in the dorms so dat mean using download managers and hoping you stayed connected. Made downloading Linux .isos a joy...

All of these games are nostalgia to me. Juat packed them down the other day.

Heroes 3: Shadow Of Death was the first game I saw and really wanted in a game store.
Might and Magic VIII was the game that got me collecting.
Heroes 3 mapmaking is something I still do, Heroes 3 was the first burnt game we got, and the first game I played like crazy.

2007 is when everything went to shit. It was right before the economic collapse. Big Bang Theory airs on TV. Facebook, YouTube, iPhone and other garbage. Not only that, but in my own personal life everything went to shit. It was the year I dropped out of high school because of all the bullying. My relationships went to hell and I lost all my friends. I became suicidal and spent a few days at a psychiatric facility. It was the year my Depression kicked in full blown. I consider 2007 to be the start of the dark era of my life. The fact that not only my personal life and mental health went to shit, but technology did as well is just further proof that 2007 was the true turning point. Oh sure, you can find references to things being bad before them. Feminism was around before then and game companies were trying to screw customers earlier than that too. But it was 2007 when these things really skyrocketed and the terribleness of everything increased at a exponential rate.

How extremely true is that... I'm fairly young, born in '91, but I remember a bit of the PSTN era and a more pure internet in general. I guess me living in a backward ass country where everything seems to come with a delay was a factor in that too.

The biggest mindfuck for me is the fact that people who spent time online back then were sometimes considered creeps, outcasts by the mainstream population, yet nowadays it's considered totally cool to waste time on fb, twitter and other networks just because the concept of 'socializing' is thrown around.

this happens with nearly all geek/nerd things

i think the only thing that is still considered socially awkward is DnD, and even that is starting to make its turn toward mainstream with the new rulesets.

Nice. I've got mine from a collection set, so it didn't come with a box
>>
>>45794189
>Shame that Steam has practically just killed that market outright.
I guess that's the only legitimate downside of Steam. As a kid I didn't get to buy games in those big boxes, cause I started late, with a PS1 and got my first pc years later, but I specifically remember seeing the games at store walls or in reviews of magazines and fantasizing about playing them, what games they were etc based on the cover or 1-2 screenshots. It was a shit back then. I remember though, that physical cases got smaller even before steam got big. I guess part of that was due to a bigger market, which meant higher demand and publishers had to cut costs. I guess in a few years music albums will be a thing of the past and will replace present vinyl. That will be funny.
>>
>>45794336
Only that now, "geek" is considered cool and even a style, even if most people follow a distorted definition of it. Apart from that, is programming really considered so lame in current time? Back in the early days, I guess it did, but now I don't really think it does.

Probably my most memorable processor/pc upgrade this; the heat sink came with two 60mm fans; it was so loud and vibrated so badly you can only imagine.
It was also when that earthquake hit Japan and ram prices exploded; 128mb cost £130.

Was the friggin' days though, none of this bios overclocking nonsense... This was crazy ass butt clenching jumper settings on the motherboard madness

Underclocking.
Some badly-written programs which use CPU cycles for timing don't function as intended when using a processor with a higher than expected clcok rate. The turbo button toggles a lower cycle rate, so such legacy programs can be used.
