Sometimes I wonder who was mad enough to make all the crazy designs. The only one that's cemented is the 700T which was apparently designed for some firm which needed something of such a form factor, just that it also went to market.

I doubt I'll ever get ahold of that IBM unit, maybe one of the other printer laptops of that time.

700T was an odd looking machine, 500 was quirky too, especially with its hinge design, twas too edgy.

Uploading my R400 and T400 bios fucked video at the moment.

If you guys see a unit that is stuck at the ThinkPad splash screen and doesn't get anywhere else after that. See if it has a broken USB, a chance, one of them are contacting metal which like stops it from booting and electrical shock.

Pull out them prongs or just make them not contact anything and you got a booting ThinkPad with a broken USB.
I wouldn't try resoldiering the vertical USBs, they are way too pricey, just get an expresscard USB instead.

This might be a retarded question, but the rubberized lid of my x220 is all sparkley. Do all Thinkpads have sparkley lids?

I think its this:

I'd just get a new ThinkPad if I were you. Replacing the motherboard is basically buying a new computer, except that it might fail the same way again.

T420 or T520 is probably the next best thing for you.

I don't usually use a laptop, but I got a thinkpad about 2 months ago and I still cannot get used to the trackpoint or touchpad. It makes my fingers hurt and it feels way slower than a mouse.

Say if you bought a T400 or T500 with a cracked screen, you can replace that panel with your dead T61's

Though its not as simple as a lid swap, T4/500 LCD cables are a bit wider than the T/R6x

TrackPoint. It felt slow to me at first as well. I'm not sure what to tell you. I guess you start to realize that it's fine. I've got the trackpad disabled in the bios now. I know with the bumpy T420 sticker it really did hurt my fingers to use, and after peeling it off it still wasn't very comfortable. I've never been a big trackpad guy anyway, though.
>>
>>45714346
Just watched your USB video that ended with the bios lock. I think the videos are a good length, around the 10 minute mark, you've also been uploading way more frequently than I thought you would. It's no worries if you slow down man, take your time with it.

I'm interested to see if you're going to try shorting the bios to remove the password. Otherwise, like you said, it's just a for parts machine.
>>
>>45714380
Thanks!

I originally thought the camera I had was shit, a Nikon S6300 but with lighting its OK, but it sucks being close up.

Man, choosing a laptop to buy is rough right now, with broadwell and skywell both looming on the horizon.

Is a t540 a good buy right now? Can be had for 800$ from the outlet, new. 1080p screen and 4800 haswell.
>>
>>45714575

Nah man. Wait for the 2015 stuff in a couple months. At the very least, you'll be able to get all the 2014 models cheaper and then put the old style ultranav button keyboard in them once the w541 comes out and you can swap its keyboard in.
>>
>>45714575
four years from now we will still be recommended ThinkPads - except for Haswell gen ThinkPads. Everything else will be fine though.

As in, T540's are shit, don't buy that. If you need a 15" workstation get a Dell Precision.
>>
Hey /g/
I've found a thinkpad T430 for sale for (an equivalent) of 409 USD. HD+ Display, 320GB 7200rpm drive, with the i5-3380M processor and 4GB of ram. Is this a good deal?

>>45714696
Solid advice, thanks.

Unfortunately I have to get something right now, I'm in America early january and I want to buy the best thing I can before I return to socialist utopia european prices.

I will be doing a lot of FPGA compiling with this machine, which calls for a quad core and generous amounts of RAM. My trusty old T61p is not up to that.

Inspirons seem awfully expensive, is there a deal I'm missing?

that feel when I have a computer more powerful than any thinkpad but want to have a thinkpad again

back when I had a thinkpad, interacting with the machine was a pleasure in itself, merely lifting it and feeling the matte magnesium cover wotuld make me smile, I would sometimes fondle it for no reason, admiring the ruggedness of its design

Now I'm stuck with a consumer HP model which disgusts me
>>
>>45715423
I've been down the road you're on, and it gets ugly. First you get a Model M because it's cheap and rugged and awesome. It's loud as sin but feels fantastic.

Then you see how cheap some of the cherry stuff is and buy a few $20 boards to try out a couple switches, maybe even the capacitive Topre sort of stuff. You drift toward tkl and 60-75% because the mouse really is so comfortable next to it and a mechanical numpad is less than twenty bucks if you know where to look.

Then you wonder about the oddball switches and dampeners and limited custom keycaps and such.

Then you start customizing things to get them just perfect and throw different weight springs into switches and wire and solder everything yourself.

Then you wind up like me with five keyboards in the closet and an all custom monster built from the mechanical keyboard from a police cruiser.

Good scissor switches are fine. You don't need mechanical. They're very nice but it's a slippery slope.

Really what I want is the new Unicomp 75% if they will finally come out with it. Instead I've got my custom to be the closest thing to it until then, which for all the money and time I've poured into it does beat a lot of modern multi-hundred dollar boards but barely edges out my favorite old BTC capacitive I got for $18.

Only bringing this up because I finally got my Granite R2 Bonus in today with my blue enter and icon backspace that I've needed to complete this thing for months.

is a t520 with 1600x900 screen a viable option for a "work" laptop in 2014?

I can buy one for 300€ + shipping.

Will the sandy bridge i5 and 4gb ram enough to work as syadmin while keeping other stuff open like office or rdp session etc.?
>>
>>45712714

Can i change the display on my Thinkpad if it is the same display (same size, screw layout and connector type) BUT is made for a different model? I want to upgrade, but they don't do 1080p IPS for my model. Even if the display fits, will it work out of the box?

>tfw can't tell if serious or sarcasm
>>
>>45716785

Can you give the example you're thinking of?
>>
Yay
>>
>>45716866

Well apparently all of these laptops (S440 L440 T431S T440S) have the exact same display and therefore any of those models can use each others display. I'm just wondering if i were to buy a 1080p IPS screen, will it work with a laptop (s440) that previously had a 720p screen? I feel like it won't work, but it should because its the exact same display, just a higher res...
>>
>>45716896

Yeah, if the size and the connectors are the same. Just look up where the connectors and stuff are located so you don't wind up with something that technically works but needs a lot of work like a t430 using the screen off an x1.
>>
>>45716896
So long as the graphics chip can out put that res you should be fine.
>>
>>45716915
So will my laptop just... recognize that the screen is now 1080p at display at that res? What 'm asking really is, is it "plug n' play" or will I have to configure it from another monitor before use?

thanks for help.
>>
>>45716956

Yeah, it has an AMD something or other with 2GB dedicated.

What's a good ThinkPad to get these days?
I haven't been able to keep up on technology or the internet since around 2008...
I used to have a T60 but that's long gone...
I only have a budget of around $250.
>>
>>45712911

>>
Hi /g/entlemen. I have a t61 with a 2.0 t7600 and a nvidia quatro. I use it primarily in bed and honestly for the like $100 that I got it for, I love it. It's in good shape, has like 4 hour battery time and I have the dock.

I only use it in bed for web tasks and I usually throw a movie/animu up in the corner. It runs unreasonably hot. I wouldn't want it on my skin right now. Should I upgrade the CPU and replace a fan? Just get a new model?
>>
>>45718548
clean it and maybe reapply thermal paste
>>
>>45718147
I'm a slut for the X-series personally. X201 might do for you in that price range. Otherwise T410. Both of those are a bit under your budget, but anything more recent will be above it. You can take the difference and buy some RAM or something.

What will you use it for?
>>
>>45717852
I paid $245 for a near mint X300 when a 'decent' one goes for about $150-190

Yeah sounds like a great deal.
Power and performance is worse than the X200, but its build is damn nice that you don't care.

>>45718051
Given its GPU performance is lower than my W700ds and its processor is lower or equal, I'd say you can be OK. I edit audio with audacity, have Photoshop CS in the background while listening to music on Chrome with multiple tabs just fine. Video skips a but during preview under Sony Vegas, takes about an hour to render a 15 minute 1080p video.

1080p can be played on an X61 with 4GB of ram flawlessly, streaming it shouldn be fine on a T520.

>>45718357
I'm gonna sell that X61T after I do the fan swap.
Just gonna put it at auction for $50.

>>45718548
Probably just needs some thermal paste if dusting doesn't work. It makes a BIG difference.
>>
>>45718958
Thanks. I'm going to use it as my general computer.
The x series is a bit to small though.
My T60 was 1600x1200, so is there a 1920x1200 T410?
>>
If I were to buy a used X220, about 3 years old, how many years should it still have to live?

My only experience with Thinkpads was with one from the EDGE series and it was...not good (yeah, I read only afterwards they're shit)
>>
>>45719135
nah, T410 only goes up to 1440x900
>>
>>45719161
Are they at least IPS?
>>
>>45719153
Depends what your needs are.

I expect my X220, upgraded to an SSD and 8GB RAM, to last me at least 3 years.
>>
>>45719174
Nope. High quality laptop screens were really uncommon for a good few years. Not sure why, but everyone gravitated to low resolution and/or worse quality panels.
>>
>>45719135
1600x900 is the max, but a lot of models didn't come with it like that.
T410s all come with that standard.
I nabbed a T410 with that screen for ~$100 but with a dying 1 hour battery and no cord, they trend around $160-190 in eBay auctions.

Not IPS, only the X2xx came with an IPS option, you're better off getting a heavy dream color HP, I forget if Dell had IPS units.
>>

>>
>>45719230
Yes.

I usually treat my battery very well so that it has a better overall lifetime, but it will still go to shit eventually. That's probably when I'll decide to get a new laptop rather than new battery.

Otherwise, it's light and portable enough for me, sturdy, very fast and snappy because of the SSD, and the Sandy Bridge i5 and integrated graphics are plenty powerful for everything I do.
>>
>>45719269

>>
>>45719153
>Full voltage 2nd gen i-series dual core processor instead of undervolted
>Three places you can slap in an SSD

Pretty good.

But then the one I got recently replaced my ancient 2004 HP Pavilion laptop that I kept for troubleshooting anything wrong with my rig and for travel. That old thing is still trucking along and running XP. Still works fine for basic browsing and stuff. It's surprising how long some things last if they're build halfway decently.

I just saw the x220t with that sweet ips screen and went "For $260, I think it's time to retire the old bird"

also should i try getting away with JB welding a ThinkPads magnesium frame rather then trying to weld it?
I'm going to cut a 14.1" widescreen chassis to fit onto a 15" T60p unit.

either the R400 or T400 is going to go in there, but I am unsure how I will go about it, I have to cut the frame because when I modified the T60p's frame, it wasn't that rigid for the W500 and I believe it was part of the culprit that short it out.

I bought a T420 with an Nvidia GPU and a 9-cell battery. $350. Might have been a little overpriced, but my parents were paying, so I wanted to go with something quick instead of hunting around.

Did I do good? I got fed up with modern laptops when I bought a $300 Asus and the hard drive was utter shit and the battery started misreporting its charge and the keyboard lost a key and one of the USB ports went out leaving me with one.

I have no idea about Football manager (mine plays Civ V well enough if that's any help). You should be fine with DJing, video editing might take a while to render. I have a X60 and the other day I spilled my water all over it. I freaked out at first but then remembered it was a Thinkpad. I let it dry out and then booted it up again.

>>
>>45727561
I actually like the new keyboard keys, but I do not like what they did to the top row at all. The trackpad makes using the trackpoint an exercise in frustration and it's easy to brush the trackpad while typing and make the cursor jump (he said he has that problem as well and it's a common complaint around his office). It is far less user-serviceable than the X220. The RAM is soldered in, keyboard replacement involves full disassembly and repasting the heatsink. You have to take the whole back cover off to swap the hard drive. In this regard it's like a Macbookification of what was once great about Thinkpads. Its screen is pretty bad, though if you were to buy one personally you have the option of 1080p IPS which is good.

IMO I would not buy one even in the future when they are available used for >$300. I am hopeful about the X250, but afaik it just fixes the touchpad and leaves the serviceability in a shitty state.
>>
>>45727652
I guess different people use it differently.
Top row is a pretty small. Only thing that i didnt like was the end/insert key but i changed that with a registry edit.
trackpad is off so i havent had any problem with it.
I dont really get what you mean by less user serviceable. Just about everything you can replace is accessible by just popping off the bottom.
Ram is not soldered in.
Keyboard replacement I heard is more difficult but screen replacement was made a lot easier.
>>
>>45727412
alright just placed my order for the x220.
>>
>>45727718
Sorry, I had it mixed up with the X1 Carbon on the RAM. The X240 still has only one slot and a silly max of 8GB. Everything else still stands, and keyboards wear out more frequently than screens, so I'm not sure that comes out as a net positive.
