Funtoo Linux. Its gentoo but the way it was ment to be before whiny man children got ahold of it. If complying from source isn't your thing find get something that doesn't support syatemdicks
>>
>>45618344
I just tried CentOS

It's much less of a clusterfuck that was Debian, so I'll just learn how to set up a CentOS server across a couple of old ThinkPads

I also run Mint on a T61p and am trying to install Gentoo on a X200
>>
I want a distro with a good blend of stability and up-to-date packages for day to day desktop usage. A package manager that doesn't break my system every once in a while would be a nice addition too (looking at you, apt-get).

Which distros would work the best like this?
>>
>>45618612
How much time does it actually take to compile shit? I'm using a i7-2600k processor, would it take hours to compile something like firefox or my DE?
>>
>>45618344
Arch linux
>>
Arch
>>
>>45618664
I was using an Intel atom and something like Firefox took about 6 hours. I think that i7 would be pretty fast. 30mins tops to compile something like xorg or kde
>>
>>45618664
If its your first time, set aside the whole day. Compiling everything from kernel to browser will take several hours, then you can use the rest of the day to sort out any problems.
>>
>>45618818
>>45618731
What about updates? I imagine I gotta compile all the updated versions of my applications aswell, so if Gentoo/Funtoo gets as many daily updates as Arch does (since it's rolling release too) can I expect do spend an hour or two a day compiling shit? Will I ever actually use my computer?

I'd love to try it, portage sounds amazing, but is the only reason to compile shit to get a ~5% performance increase?

I've don't have experience with Arch (been a Gentoo user for about 10 years now), but all my sync and @world updates haven't taken long at all. Usually a few minutes. If there happens to be a rather large update, I'll just do it before I go to bed.

>>
>>45618629

This. I use centos because well it just works. I also deal with servers ect. So it didnt hurt to learn it.
>>
>>45618886
>>45618886
I'm not sure about a world compile, never done one. I've heard people say they take an hour and others said they do them at night while asleep (5-7 hours)

I don't have a lot experience with it. I installed it cause I wanted to see what all the hype was about. The best and most exciting thing for me was configuring and complying my own kernel. A harderned kernel with just my drivers configured and all the sercuity
>>
>>45619083
It does work well. I stopped distro churning on bare metal and run CentOS on my main system.

Do you want a job?

Yes - > Centos

No - > Install Gentoo
>>
>>45618886
I think you can cache a lot.of your compiles which makes updating faster.
>>
>>45618886
Install ccache, and updates/recompiles will compile a lot faster.
>>
>>45619212
is centos really that good?
>>
>>45618955
ZFS and support probably. If openbsd ever ports HAMMERFS I'll move my server over in a blink.
>>
Happiest CentOS user of all time here! After several years of using it on my servers I've moved it to desktop. Best one in my whole computing experience.

Debian 8 Jessie or Sid. Not Wheezy. Very good OS
>>
>>45618640
Debian 8 Jessie (testing) or Sid ("unstable "). It really does not deserve the name unstable, but for you I would recommend Linux Mint.
>>
Manjaro Xfce

If I install Debian sid, can I just follow these instructions to get the proprietary ATI driver working? https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary#AMD_Catalyst_Legacy_13.1

Of course I would then change wheezy to sid/unstable.
>>
>>45618664
I have i5-2467m
Its pretty slow but first compile gcc ( about 20-30min ) then you will compile faster.
15 min maybe
Make sure that
MAKEOPTS="-j8"
Is enabled
>>
>>45619229
It's awful but it's actually widely in use so you can get a job with it.

FYI Ubuntu and other popular distributions are based on Debian sid.
>>
>>45618629
If you want to run a server, you can't really beat Redhat/CentOS.

Well, until they fucked over all sysadmins and forced systemd on us in version 7.
>>
should i use xubuntu or linux mint as baby's first distro?

im on wangblows 7 and i want to dualboot
>>
>>45619582
Also add parallel-fetch in FEATURES to not get stalled too much with deps etc.

And add --jobs=8 --load-average=8 to EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS.

(alternatively, get a binpkg for big programs like firefox).

Using gnome 3 on arch righ tnow. it's nice if your computah runs well. good on antergos.

There are plenty of differences. The software you want to use on your non-server computer requires deps that came out in the last month or so while the only packages you have access to are decade-old with minor bug fixes backported.
