Was just about to post in old thread. I joined the HD800 master race today. Time to pick out an amp and DAC. Have an intermediary amp already but definitely need a DAC.
>>
>>45613014
Just keep in mind that DACs have the lowest cost efficiency in the audio chain.

The performance increase from a $100 DAC to an $800 DAC is marginal
>>
Reposting cause I didn't get a response in the old thread.
I'm looking to get an amp/dac soon, but I'm stuck between a few options and I wanted another opinion.
I'm choosing between:
Audioengine D1
Mav-Audio D1+
Schiit Magni2/Modi2
Aune T1

The amp/dac will be paired with HD 558s, I have no idea which of these to pick.
>>
Looking for advice on new pair of headphones around 50 dollar range. Will be using with laptop for general use but music will be the most frequent. The only headphones I've had before this point are HTF600's which have broken after a year and a half. I would have just bought another pair but they seem to have doubled in price when I wasn't looking. Looking for something that I can wear for 8 to 12 hours comfortably.

If I have to pay 60 for the same ones I had before, I will, but I would rather not.
>>
>>45613129
Audioengine D1 if you wish to run speakers off the RCA out in the back. You can sometimes snag them on Massdrop for a good deal. I've got one and like it.

The Mav is good, but doesn't compare to the Schiit stack. Any tube amps with DACs are going to be shit in your price range, and the Aune T1 has a tube pre-amp, not a tube amp.

Your HD558s should be good with a D1. You don't need much else. Though a Schiit stack would be the next option--the O2+DAC the next.
>>
>>45613227
That's pretty in line with what I was thinking, thank you for the input!
>>
Y-yo does the Modi work alright on Linux?
>>
>>45613129
D1 is trash
D1+ uses tubes
magni and modi 2 are fine
t1 is a fake tube amp
o2 and odac are fine
>>
>>45613286
From what I've read, the D1+ only uses the tubes for the speaker out, and is there something wrong with it using tubes? I've heard many people say good things about the tube out.

Just got some Shure SRH840s today. I like them, they're pretty good.
>>
Been looking for some closed headphones under a $100 and I ended up with the HD 280's or the 7506's. I want them to listen to jrock, jpop, rock and alike.

I also found the HD 380 on amazon at $115, but I don't know how they compare to the 7506's which are $80 atm on amazon.

Any thoughts?
>>
>>45613286
>>45613314
The t1 is NOT a tube amp. It is a tube DAC. There is nothing wrong with tubes it's just they are known to produce a more warmer sound along with a slightly larger soundstage.

Compared to the m&m stack, there have been reviews where the t1 sounds and potentially has the capability to sound better than the stack with a proper tube.
>>
Can someone explain what a soundstage is in simple terms to me?
>>
Heading out shopping tomorrow, think I'm going to grab one of the bottom tier STAX.

need a recommendation, I'm a total noob

looking to spend up to 150$ preferably less.

Sound quality should obviously be good but I'm far from a snob.

Need to be compatible with Pc, ps3, ps4, vita and mobile/android. WIIU would be nice, as much as possible really.

Tonal balance doesn't matter to me

would like at least some isolation

need the things to be reliable, I'm here because i'm sick of 30$ headphones breaking every couple months.

Needs to be shaped like the apple ones or generic sony buds as nothing else fits in my ears, open to headsets if any are decent, a mic would be nice but this is more for music than gaming.

my music taste is fairly varied but I do like some heavy stuff, industrial, alternative, baroquecore, but also stuff like cash and classical.

I'm in ontario Canada

thanks in advance.

>>45613488
Sense of spaciousness. It provides positional awareness, for example, if someone is walking behind of you on your left side, etc.

Headphones with a "small", "narrow", etc, soundstage will sound more as if the sound is coming from within your head. Headphones that have a "big", "wide" soundstage will sound as if sounds are coming from the room.

Most of the new Lambdas are worthless. Better hunt for second-hand units in Yahoo JP auctions.
>>
>>45614074
Not him, but why are the new Lambdas worthless?
>>
>>45614079
The older, discontinued models sound better and they lack the infamous STAX etch in the upper mids/low treble regions.

The new stuff is also quite overpriced I feel; the SRS-2170 system costs around $700 for example and just for a bit more, you can get the HiFiMan HE-560 which blow them out of the water.
>>
>>45614134
If by $700, you mean $470, then sure.

That's not the point. Do you understand anything about actual tube amps?

That's a grey market price though. Official price of the SRS-2170 through authorized distributor elsewhere is around $700.

What makes it trash compared to the other low end solutions like schiit and O2? This has highest on my list of DAC wants due to having the complete set of inputs.
>>
>>45614208
If he were really in Japan then I would still hunt for second-hand units at Fujiya Avic. If you're lucky you can probably get a Lambda Pro and SRM-1/MK2 combo for around the same price.

I have some sort of mental wall with buying a product manufacturered by a company called "Schitt".

Yeah I'm really debating whether I want to get that involved higher-end headphones. I can't really tell if it's bullshit or not and I don't know anyone who has a setup I can try for myself. But my current headphones, although sounding well enough, are hurting my head. Feels bad man, probably just going to buy some $100 IEMs.

Didn't know where else to post this, but i figured this was a good enough place, because there are probably enough audiophiles lurking this thread.

Does anyone else here experience ASMR? I just found out about this today listening to the radio but ive been experiencing this since I was a kid when ever I heard certain beautiful songs. It isn't triggers by weird noises like some people, but with really complex engaging songs, and listening to beautiful music through some nice headphones really triggers it as well.

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this phenomena.

>>
>>45615050
Was just curious if there was something super awful with it. Seems like the differences between most DACs are minimal anyway, so it seemed surprising to see it singled out as a problem child.

I've only locked my eyes on this one because it's one of the few systems under $400 that supports both usb and optical inputs, still has rca outputs, and isn't running off usb power. Seems understandable that this could be a "too good to be true" package.

More or less. The single difference is the material of the headband cushion, which is a fabric on 558 and a fake leather on 598. The fake leather is probably easier to clean off the oils your head leaks, but you won't feel a difference unless you're bald.

Welcome to the club.

First off register the headphones and request the certificate for freq response ( if you want to EQ for perfect neutrality ). Second HD800 is not very hard to drive. Try a schiit stack if you are from america as i think its pretty inexpensive. I wanted to originally go with a schiit amp & dac but import cost was too much.
I think the schiit stacks match HD800 very well.

Also if you are not going to use EQ i would recommend tubes over solid state for HD800.

I finally got my KZ ed3 a couple of days ago.

Bought it for 7$ from aliexpress.

I am quite impressed with the build quality of the housing.

It's metal and it feels very solid, without being too heavy.

But the cable feels a bit flimsy and thin.

I'm not an audiophile but i guess it's a little bass heavy.

And the drums sounds thin? compared to my dt880.

Overall , 8/10 would buy again. It's fucking cheap and looks nice.

The 518 is open, I'm looking for a closed one.

Any one in here with the HD 380's? Differences between this and the 7506's?
>>
>>45619421
never heard them but judging from every other sennheiser headphone, it won't have the harsh and sibilant highs of the sony, but it will also be worse in every other aspect. bass, detail, build quality, comfort, all worse.
IMO it's not worth buying sennheiser until you get up to the 558, many other companies do cheap stuff better.

hey guys, probably a dumb question but I could use the help. I plan on picking up the beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium 250 ohm headphones and I'm just trying to decide which dac and amp to get.
Up until a few days ago I was going to get a magni/modi schiit stack, but now there are "uber" versions of both.

My question to you all is: is it worth it to get the uber versions of either the dac or amp (Or both)? Or am I fine with the basic versions? I plan on doing most of my listening through my laptop. Thanks so much for your help.
>>
>>45619644
The basic versions are good enough.

You could even skip the DAC entirely and just get the amp.
>>
>>45619418
You could've just gotten a balanced cable from Forza. The Sennheiser one is overpriced as fuck anyways.
>>
>>45619744
whys that? I though getting a decent dac was really important
>>
>>45619803
Chances are that the laptop already outputs transparent audio quality. Most modern realtek cards are sufficient enough to be used as inputs into amps. They just suck at powering headphones directly.

>>
>>45619774
I got the Forza cable before I acquired the HDVD 800. Besides, all my other amps are single-ended anyway.
>>
>>45618069
A well made splitter shouldn't deteriorate the quality of the signal significantly enough for you to notice.

I've heard good things about the WA7, but take that with a grain of salt. At that price point, most of the buyers will be self-proclaimed "audiophile" retards.
>>
And the ignorant placebo retards have arrived.

I'm out of here.

Be a good goy and get that DAC to go with your Schiit stack anon.
>>
>>45619893
>this irrational hatred towards Schiit

I don't understand this at all. They're probably the only company based in the USA which provides reasonably priced gears across the various price points; instead of castigating them more companies should follow suit.

>>
Maybe you don't NEED a DAC, no one needs minutely better audio quality. But you can't say that a DAC won't help. Even if it makes a small difference, it's still a difference, and isn't that what being an audiophile is all about?
>>
>>45620354

>>
>>45620394

>>
>>45620402
I've got an O2, a Yamaha RX-V775 receiver, a Yamaha M40 power amplifier and a STAX SRM-313. You decide.

>>45620394
The issue for me is when people quite literally waste money on $1000 DACs and cables that do not improve the sound quality at all and then pretend it does because they are experiencing placebo.

The continuous stream of placebophile bullshit makes actual knowledge harder to obtain for everyone.
>>
>>45619943
The DAC is less than absolutely necessary.
Schiit can lower overhead by being direct to market with no middlemen. The downside is that it is harder demo a Schiit product.
I think they need a bit more thorough beta process, not as badly as Hifiman does.

>>45619863
Falls into the common trap of being audio jewelry that is more form over function.
>>
>>45620394
I'll acknowledge that there are diminishing returns when it comes to DAC/Amps, but within the >$300 range, I think that you'll get the most of your money when it comes to improving the audio vs the onboard audio.

honestly can't we agree the 600 and 650 are more similar than they are different? Imo, the 600 is too flat sounding not enough bass, the warmth and bass boost of the 650 just sounds more natural and better to my ears, sounds more realistic and has more life imo.

But really they are all amazing headphones. The 800's are so damn bright though the piercing treble gets to me after awhile. And i refuse to EQ that just gutts all sound quality imo.

I'm looking into getting a pair of the LCD-X. They will be for studio use, but I will of course want to listen to music through them. I'm going to have them going through an Onyx Blackjack into my DAW. My question is, will everything still sound flawless if I'm listening to FLAC through a media player on my desktop with the interface? The Onyx Blackjack is basically a clean, flat DAC and amp in itself, right?

Also, for those who have listened extensively to the LCD-X: I was hoping to get the microsuede cups instead of the leather. Someone mentioned that this reduces the sound stage, though, which I do not want. Can anyone compare the LCD-X's leather cups against the microsuede cups?

Dat comfort
Dat build quality
Dat low distortion
Dat soundstage
Dat imaging

The only problem is a 4-5 db peak at 6000 hz which is very easy to EQ down.

I definitely like bass most. Followed by treble. A U or V shape would be nice for me, with more emphasis on bass.

The only "decent" headset I've owned in the past is V-Moda Crossfade LP's

>Preferred Music
Mostly electronica. Various sorts of dubstep, drum and bass, combination of the two. Artists like Pendulum and Nero.
Some modern-day metal, like Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Bullet for my Valentine
And a bit of classical.
The rest is a combination of anything and everything, that is not often listened to.

Low impedance mean high current ratio to voltage, a more common problem with speakers. More likely to run into current limits, and most devices don't provide too much current to the headphone jacks. The latest LCD-3 is probably their easiest to drive headphone yet.
The blackjack has a fairly high output impedance, so about half(-3dB) of the power gets wasted before going into the LCD-X load.

Pretty good, mids and highs sound great, full bass but controlled (much better than the open-back version). Huge soundstage and detail, when I listen to classical music and I can easily hear the seperate instruments.

Many people complain about the wing support not fitting properly but if you use the shoelace trick it will fit perfectly (pic related). I've had them for about 1.5 years now, using it for +6 hours each day, and I've never had any discomfort.

Only complaint would be the non-detatchable cable but I haven't had any problems with it, it's just a nice thing to have.

A solid pair of cans for any type of listening.

I don't have either on hand to tell you that, and I don't have your ears either. Doesn't list current either so I can only make rough guesses.

I made a little error before, it would waste about 6-7db before going into the headphone load. There might still be enough voltage left over, but I wouldn't be sure of that without an ammeter, You could just buy a passable headphone amp with some of that LCD-X money.
>>
>>45622504
still butt cheap for what you get
>>
>>45621746
I feel a tad suspicious about your claim that the LCD-3 is easier to drive than the LCD-X. From the Audeze website:

"The LCD-X is an extremely efficient headphone that extracts the maximum power out of low-powered amplifiers and portable devices."

"The LCD-3 must be driven by an external headphone amplifier or integrated amp."
>>
>>45622725
I'm going off of measurements of the LCD-X and LCD-3. Measured sensitivity of the latest LCD-2/3 is 97-98dB/mW to the LCD-X 95dB.
It makes the simultaneous trade off being higher impedance so it needs more voltage, but the amp will perform a bit more efficiently into high impedance loads. Confused yet?

If you haven't figured it out, I haven't listened to the 2/3 for almost 2 years. They seemed passable off a phone, though I didn't have any spare headroom with power.
