I am in the market for a think pad capable of watching anime at 1080p.

I was going to buy the x200 but cried when I saw that it had a 720p resolution and no optical drive.

What think pad is right for me?

I just checked them out; I am not looking to break the bank for some cartoons.

15inch screens are too big and the T series has a poor battery life.

The s series is right for me; however no damn optical drive!

What about a dell latitude e4300?
>>
>>45508747
the E4310 and E4320 are sleek looking laptops and are really good for their price, not thinkpad tier but they are rather close.

Usually i wouldn't post such things but i'm feeling generous today.

older T series (T6*) are very cheap though

you probably aren't going to find a <15" laptop with a 1080p screen for cheap

do you really need an optical drive? what for?

small laptops typically do not have optical drives because they take up so much space

if you get something like a thinkpad x201, you can buy a cheap dock that has an optical drive
>>
>>45508797

thinkpad x3* are 13" and have an optical drive

only problem is they only take shitty 1.8" hard drives

>>
>>45508969
Looks good.

What's the catch?
>>
>>45509009
It's not full HD. Apart from that, please give me a couple of minutes.
>>
>>45509009
CPU power is the catch, and it doesn't have an Ultrabase connector. It is about as fast as a T60 (some supported T60 CPUs are faster, but I'm not sure those were a factory option).
Anyway, if you desire the optical drive bay, you may find an Ultrabase acceptable. It is a module that is the same size of the laptop and is connected on the bottom. It provides some extra ports, and an optical drive bay. When installed, it makes the laptop thicker and heavier.
>>
>>45509098
Ultrabases are available for the X2** models.

I would suggest you to save to buy an X220.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X220
(non tablet because those are faster; you want to play that Coalgirls Hyouka OP properly; maybe the tablet versions are able to cope with them, but I don't know; actually, check if an X220 can play it with the other /g/entoomen).

I don't need to say that you should buy one with the fastest CPU option. X series have the CPU soldered on the motherboard, so it can't be upgraded.

The Ultrabase will give you a optical drive bay that supports, drum roll, Blu-ray drives.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_UltraBase_Series_3

You can buy if after you buy the laptop, so, there's no need to pay the full price upfront. You also must include the BD unit on the price.

People would complain about the 16:9 1366x768 screen, but since you want it for anime video, it is acceptable.
>>
>>45509193
I'm sorry but I cannot get a dock.

I just need a small <14" laptop capable of watching anime where ever I am. The dock is an inconvenience; small battery life is an inconvenience.
Build quality is mandatory due to portability.

I appreciate all these suggestions; but it would be awkward to bring a decade old laptop with a docking station around a girls house just to watch anime.

For a maximum of 150, what is my best bet? The x301?
>>
>>45508563

>Trinitron

hnnnng muh benis
>>
>>45509267
Most 1080p anime will play without skipping on the X301, so I guess that is your only sub 14" option with optical drive bay (it is DVD, not BD).
I'm not sure you will find an X301 for that price. Of course shop around, and another note: there are two CPU options, the slower one has 90% of the speed of the faster one, based on Passmark scores. Both are faster than my current T60, and you should be able to play most anime, even 10 bit, like I do here. Only some full retard encodes will lag.

Since I found no results on Rebecca Black Tech for this, I will post this here, for the benefit of the DIY /g/entoomen:
ThinkClamp: an Arduino USB controller for T60 keyboards (warning: firmware is closed source):
https://flashandrc.wordpress.com/2014/08/03/support-faq-customize-keyboard-matrix/

You can get an unpopulated board for it here (get the blue version):
https://www.tindie.com/products/rampadc/thinkpad-usb-keyboard-adapter-v061-rev-11-pcbreceptacle/

Look around for info on the keyboard connector, so that you won't need to buy a dead motherboard to get one.

This will be useful in the future, when we will need new hardware inside our gutted ThinkPad shells. Solutions for the panels are common. You can use LCD panel adapters and this keyboard controller to make a softwareless terminal using a ThinkPad shell.

Vintage TVs seem really hard to find "in the wild" these days. They show up on eBay once in a while, but shipping is expensive and working condition is always a gamble if you can't see it with your own eyes.

Also, you might not really want to use one of these, or any vintage television, for IRC. The effective resolution is only about 300x480 interlaced. The text would have to be pretty huge to be legible and then you wouldn't be able to fit much on a 9" screen. They can be nice for TV watching, old console games, and maybe vintage computing though.

Also mine picks up a ton of noise when connected to my old ThinkPads.

I have a X300 so it's close to the x301 and for me the biggest flaw is the non availabity of batteries. The chinese ones have shit battery time. However, It can play 1080 videos without any issue but I'm actually thinking about getting a X201 because it can last longer on battery, have a better cpu and have more readily available replacement parts.
>>
>>45509726
probably both
>>
Question, is the dock for the x200 series universal? Meaning, can I use the same dock on an x200, x200s and x200t?
>>
>>45509726
>Will it give me powers or cancer?
Probably neither.

One of my old friends I haven't chatted with in years bought one from eBay which ended up having an extremely weak, but usable CRT. He used it for a few months and it stopped working completely. Not sure what exactly failed or what he did with it after that.

Mine has been in storage for a while but I should get it out and power it up. Mine has a CRT so strong that it will hurt my eyes when turned up past minimum, but it has some purity issues and the picture is slightly rotated. Those issues can be annoying while gaming, but aren't usually noticeable during TV watching. Of course, live TV watching sucks because of 16:9, but it would still be nice for old 4:3 shows I guess.

Planning to install debian and making it into a servertop while a new CMOS is on its way from ebay. I'll look to get a new cell battery as a UPS eventually
>>
>>45508506
Prior to 840 G1 line, 8XXX have poor battery life even with 9 cell batteries, 2XXX have it much better because they are smaller models (11'' and 12.5'' so they only are 1366X768).
Based on Notebookcheck review 840 battery lasts through 5-6 hours of work, 12 hours idle.

Problem with HP is they don't offer a bigger than 50W battery, unless you want to use their 60w slice.

7XX G2 line has equal battery power but with even bigger power consumption.
Based on battery life alone I would probably rate it 2XXX > 840 G1 > ZBook 14 G1 > 7XX G2 > 8XXX.
Wiki article lists the models with their highest specs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_EliteBook

As for the Latitude question, can't comment really. Laptop durability question is quite important but I haven't found concise and trustable sources for this.

I had to replace the CMOS battery in my T23 around four years ago I think. They usually don't make it more than 8-10 years.

I put a generic eBay main battery in mine also and it's held up really well. They can be hit or miss but I really lucked out with this one. Lasts at least a couple hours and that's all I need.

That television is better than many of the late CRT PVM's. I dont know what happened, but QC on the early new millenial PVM models dropped considerably. Late 90's models are still very good.

Although you can enter nothing and still get into the BIOS, but you can not change anything.

There is also a power on password that pops up as soon as you boot up the laptop, that is different from a BIOS password. This can be reset by taking out the battery and CMOS battery and holding the power button down for a few seconds, draining the board from all its power.

Hey /g/

About to buy a new Thinkpad, replacing my slowly breaking X200.

I was going to go with the X220 but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? I have a deal for refurb X220 + IPS screen, and 6-cell for £340 (~$530 but shit's expensive in UK)

I like the IPS screen, long battery life, keyboard, and portability. Not a fan of the low res or 16:9.
I prefer xx20 series because of the keyboard and apparently better durability than xx30. Already have an SSD.

TL;DR: Need a Thinkpad for word processing, web browsing, programming, maybe light gaming. Recommend please.

Any X220 owners, complaints/other feedback?

Cool, thanks.

I just meant in the context of buying on ebay, does it mean that if there's no screenshot I can assume there's a password or is it just a not too commonly done thing?

I got a non-genuine one and it works fine, but has no pressure sensitivity.

how much did it cost you?, most I have seen on ebay they come with a few of them red thingies how do you take them out and replace?
>>
>>45511996
It is, I use mine to watch HD flash all the time, but remember you're on 1280x800 so why would you bother cranking it all the way up anyway?

>how much did it cost you?
Previous owner replaced it, dunno.

>most I have seen on ebay they come with a few of them red thingies how do you take them out and replace?
Beats me. I think you just pull them out...

No, those go on the bottom.

If you can't find the right thing, you could always just try using sugru or something similar.

Is CumPad meme only a ploy to bring the prices down or is it a real thing?

high demand = high prices

no it's real
>>
>>45513099
No it doesn't. High quantity demanded leads to high prices

Hard to say, I'd get the T400 if its integrated graphics, hell I sold one for about that much with a WXGA+ screen and broken USB bezel.

X201 and T410 can pretty much go toe to toe, with the exception of the T410 having a dedicated card or not.
T410 has the big enter key, X201 kept the original 6 row keyboard.

Even then, that X201 can be fitted with an IPS or a rare AFFS WXGA+ screen, get that if you see the Lenovo logo on the left side of the LCD screen bezel, if not T410 has an OK WXGA+ screen if you bump into it.
If they both got WXGA screens, I'd pick whichever had a better i5 or HDD size, T410 can be upgraded to quad-core CPU, X201 can't, it would need an upgraded motherboard.

Ha weird, maybe its due to the temperature.

>>45511693
Might just need oil in the fan or a whole new unit. Should be under $25 if you are in burgerland.
