What I want to know is why hasn't anybody made an ultrabook with the usual built-battery but also with the capability of bolting on to a 1/2 inch thick battery pack with the same dimensions as the ultrabook. It'd bring the ultrabook to regular laptop thicknesses while easily adding an extra day's worth (possibly more) of battery life.

Well there is no complex electrical equations there
If you have a fixed voltage you need more amps to have greater power
Higher amps means thicker wires so your cable doesn't melt

And btw it would be really inefficient to charge a laptop with 5V since they are 19V battery packs (at least mine)
