32 gb or 16 gb or 8 gb of RAM?

64 just to be safe.

1TB

8

8 is plenty. Heck 6 is enough unless you hard-core gamer.

SSD more important.
>>
>>45407172
Just stick an SSD into the ram slot.
>>
>>45407172
Wait for DDR5.
>>
>>45407172
With most motherboards having 4 DIMM slots for RAM and 8GB ram sticks becoming more and more common, why not grab 4 GB sticks and stick them in your computer.

RAM drives are supposedly really fast
>>
1GB is more than enough. If you need more than that, that's because you use shitty software.
>>
64. Gotta have them tabs.
>>
>>45407172
8GB you fucking autistic pieces of shit. It would be plenty for over 90% of the general population - might even be too much in some cases.

This is like that audiophile 24-bit FLAC files or blu-ray mux archives - you don't need it.

>>45407172

are you running a server or a game rig? maybe a workstation? each has a different asnwer you dunce
>>
>>45407318
>inb4 muh gaming performance
No you dipshits - unless you made the unforgivable sin or buying an APU because you wanted to go full cheap on making a gaming rig then more than 8GB won't do anything noticeable.
>>
>>45407318
>you don't need it

but what if i want it?

32 or 64 bit OS?

Faster than the fastest SSDs.

>caveat, I use RAM heavy applications

Since I have four slots to work with, and a processor that can support up to 32GB, I went with 2x8. If I ever want to upgrade to 32, I still have the space to do it.

In other words, I'm trying to make the most of the slots I have.

>just bought some goofy gaymer RAM with heatsinks because cheap and solid reviews

I wonder if I made a bad choice.

Then I think you are an autist. I know that one day computers will require like 1TB of DDR8 RAM for your brain implant simulations and hyper-real virtual world simulations but you will be dead before any of that even comes close to research and development.

I've been running 4GB on my machine for the past 5 years, only now I'm starting to feel like I might need more.

>>
>>45407479
Useless unless you actually need it. 32 GB is the max you'll ever need to future-proof your computer, because by the time that becomes too little you'll need a whole new computer.
>>
>>45407172
8gb if you're a poor pleb

16gb if you want unlimited multitasking for any conventional use

You would already know if you needed 32gb
>>
>>45408209
64gb if your dick is bigger than a foot.
>>
>>45408370
64GB if you're willing to pay a 40% price markup on all parts because you're going to end up buying server equipment.
>>
Don't listen to 8gb poorfags, 16GB is a minimum
>>
>>45408414
I tend to buy used server equipment for machines that need a lot of memory.

You can pick up a slower 8+ core machine with a bunch of drive bays and 64G+ of memory for $500 or so.

If you have a problem that NEEDS that much memory, the slowness of the CPUs will be outweighed by the speedup from the larger working set.
>>
>>45407172
8 if you just want to play games, maybe 16 if you want to be super future-proofed and you have the money for it.
>>
>>45407198

>>
>>45407172
OP don't tell anybody but you can DOWNLOAD all the rams you need. The pirate bay has all the ram you'll ever need.
>>
16 if you're playing vidya and want to future proof your rig. If you needed more you wouldn't need to ask.
>>
>>45408612
What uses that much memory without bottle-necking the CPU('s)?
>>
here is a somewhat related question...
I have 8GB of DDR3 1600 and an additonal 4GB of DDR3 1066. Currently running 8/1600, would it be better to add the 4 GB and run 12GB @ 1066 or just leave it like it is with 8GB @ 1600
>>
>>45407482
Probably won't be dead when they need a TB of ram. When I was a kid 1-4mb was all you needed. Now it's 4-8gb. I'll probably live another 30 years. That's more than enough to hut a TB
>>
>tfw 4gb of ram still
Wish I bought 8gb 3-4 years ago while it was only $35
>>
>>45408682

>>
>>45407318
RAM is cheap and barely consumes any energy so why not buy enough of it? I'm talking about DDR3 to be clear.
>>
>>45408684
That's a lot of bloat.

Thanks JQuery.
>>
>bought 8gb 2 years ago for $45
>exact same ram I bought is currently $80

Even half the stuff on sale didnt dip below 50
>>
32GB if you can get it. Ideally, as much RAM as you can put in a system is the optimal amount of RAM for it.

You don't _need_ this much RAM, but any good OS will use extra RAM as buffers/cache for generally speeding up the entire system. Linux is very good at this.
>>
>>45407172
Yes.

It's more than likely 2x 1024MB and 2x 512MB sticks.
>>
>>45407435
>>45407485
4 GB is just enough, 8 GB is future proof. 16 GB if you can't close your programs while playing the latest Call of Gentoo while browsing the web with Emacs and checking your email with systemd.

>tfw 8 GB is not enough for my cousin

>>
Depends on your budget and how you will be using your computer.

8gb is a good minimum but I'd strongly recommend going for 16gb if you can afford it.

>>
correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't windows dedicate some of your RAM for VRAM? this is excluding the GDDR5 that is with GPUs?

More RAM in this case could be beneficial? Especially when going to a 3+ monitor setup
>>
Not using your RAM slots for SSDs.
>>
>>45410640
That is only true in the case of an integrated graphics card, if you have an external card it uses it's own VRAM, which may or may not be GDDR5 depending on the generation of said card.
Both AMD and nVidia are actually currently working on technologies that would allow graphics cards use system memory and vice versa, but that's a whole different story.

The ULLtraDIMM™ SSD connects flash storage to the memory channel via standard DIMM slots, in order to close the gap between storage devices and system memory. It can achieve less than five microseconds write latency at the DIMM level, enabling a new generation of software requiring ultra-low latency. ULLtraDIMM SSDs use SanDisk’s proprietary Guardian Technology™ Platform to meet the endurance needs of write-intensive and mixed-use application workloads.

Depends on what you can best afford, if you can afford 16gb though i'd say go for it, or at the very least go 8gb and when you can add another 8. I originally had 2x2gb way back on a previous system, upgraded to 2x4gb and kept the 2x2gb ran both kits for 12gb of ram, then got another 2x4gb kit when it was on sale, $35 bucks to double my ram was nice, so i have 4x4gb for 16gb of ram. It's also nice because i can run multiple programs before noticing any sort of slow-down and the ability for the system to cache to ram before using pagefile helps a fair bit, before when i only had 4gb i would start getting slowdowns when trying to keep web browsing and playing games, when i got 8gb i noticed it was much smoother, and 16gb has helped my system to run flawlessly. I will probably finally get an SSD some time soon and use my spinpoint f3 for more storage, currently it is my boot-drive, with my WD black for game storage.
>>
>>45407435
4Gb for now, Will buy 1-3 identical sticks int eh near future. For right now CS:GO and TF2 play just fine with smooth rates. Haven't tried video editing with Lightworks or anything yet, though

>>
8 is all you need unless your running a RAMDISK
>>
Since I've started doing lots of CAD and GIS work I find myself needing more ram constantly. I only have 8gigs

so go for 32
>>
>>45407222
For gaming 8 is enough, for video and picture editing you could need to go up to 64. I'm running out of the 16gb I got while processing raw images with lightroom and photoshop.
>>
>>45412773

Fuck that shit just go here: http://www.downloadmoreram.com/ and download more ram for FREE
>>
The only time I needed 12 gig was in 2012 running 10 instances of tf2 for the halloween gift event.
>>
>>45407318
You are the autistic one here. Haven't done much video or raw image editing have you? I've had Photoshop alone taking over 10gb of RAM while editing multiple pictures, creating panoramas and working with higher color bit depths. If you are just playing video games, browsing internet, watching movies or doing anything of such, 8GB will suffice easily but for many editing programs, especially images and videos having the extra RAM really is helpful if not necessary.

Right now I got Lightroom, Chrome, Foobar, Qbittorrent, Steam, Spotify, IRC, Skype, Thunderbird and Line open and I'm using about 6 GB of RAM out of the 16 I got.

Actually Star Citizen is looking like 8gb is the minimum spec, so for SOME things it won't be enough (mentioning it since main thing looking forward to).

Besides that agree 8gb is enough for gaming.
>>
>>45407172
I use 12GB because ayy triple channel but 8GB should be enough this days.
>>
16gb to be able to comfortably switch off your page file.

I play CoH 2 and still run it perfectly fine with 8GB
