hey /hpg/

i'm about to go to bed, but i wanted to write down a couple things.

I am the guy that a few threads earilier was complaining about his headphones sounding unbalanced.

I ran several tests with my Cantatis' jack output, my intergrated soundcard output and my vinyl player connected to an external amplifier and my Cowon C2 PMP for good measure.

My AKG K712 (received yesterday), DT880 and SRH440 all sound less potent on my left ear.
What i make of this, i probably have hearing damage on my left ear. I tried listening for an hour and my right ear started feeling really odd, so i think i may have fucked my eardrums or something. Also, horrible, horrible tinnitus everytime i listen to anything at a decent volume.

Doctor visit is tuesday and i hope it's nothing serious. If it is, it means i'll have to use speakers permanently and abandon the threads.

Just here to say: fucking take care of your ears. Don't fuck around with Q-Tips like i did because i'm a massive fucking faggot. You won't miss them until you start hearing like 0.00001db less on one ear and then you'll be sorry as hell.

Godspeed anons. I'm off.

Hi I'm new here and I know nothing about headphones.

I use in ear earphones because they're small portable and I don't like other people hearing my music when the volume is up.

My problem is, every 3 months or so one of the earphones (usually the left) gets quieter and eventually stops working. I don't throw them around I try to be gentle with them but it keeps happening. Because of this I'm scared to buy expensive ones because they'll probably die soon anyway.
1. What am I doing wrong that is giving my earphones such a short lifespan?
2. What are some durable ones I could buy
3. Should I keep replacing them with cheap under -20$ ones or would investing in a more expensive pair be worth it?

>>
>>45393992
Do you twirl the cord around your fingers as a habit?

Yes, it's worth it to make the jump to something more expensive. I bought cheap Bestbuy trash for years. The increase in audio quality was enough to make me giddy when I put some research into getting a decent pair.
>>
>>45394094

sub bass is meant to be felt throughout the body and not just localized to your head.
>>
Why are there no good closed headphones $500 - $1000?

wearable subwoofer + open headphones like HD800 and ma900 should bring us headphone listeners closer to experiencing listening to 3-way tower speakers without bothering roomates & neighbors.

it sounds stupid on paper but you have to experience it to believe. It's fun showing it to friends and watching their faces when the bass hits.
>>
>>45394295
That's really depressing. The t50rp is junk, no matter how expensive the mods get.
The th900 brings mixed results over the discontinued D5000/D7000. The Fostex dynamics and Sony headphone offer little isolation.

Why exactly would it need a crossover? This is not a real subwoofer where it puts out audio your other equipment can't it just lets you feel the low parts via transducers and does not put out any audio on its own.

It doesn't. Or it's got one built-in you cant adjust, I don't actually know how it works. Freq. response is around 5 - 120hz.
It's very tight, if you listen with a stereo and a sub you sort of forget it's even there and it just feels like you've got you sub really loud. It's great.

Some high end headphones already can produce decent sub bass.

Now imagine if you own planar magnetic headphones... this current breed is the best when it comes to producing leveled high part of sub bass. If you own a high end planar magnetic headphone with subpac... you should be able to set subpac crossover to 30hz (mid to lower end of sub bass)

But why would you want to stop your headphones from outputting anything they can and hand that off to a device that you only feel and can't hear? This is what setting a crossover would do.

>>45394539 basically says the subpack has its own high frequency cutoff and lets your headphones do whatever they do on their own passing all the audio off to them.
>>
>>45394607

Did I read that right?

Subpac has its own cut off? Does that mean the end user has the option of setting cut-off? For example, I don't want the Subpac to leak beyond 100hz
>>
>>45394675
I'm still thinking you don't even understand what this device does.

It makes no sound but is a bunch of transducers that are used to vibrate your body giving the FEELING of a powerful subwoofer. This is why it works with your current audio system, be it speakers or headphones, and does not replace any part of it.

So worrying about audio cutoffs and how its going to affect the rest of the way your system sounds is pretty silly.
>>
>>45394675
It has a cutoff but you can't adjust it.
It doesn't matter though, there won't be any clashing frequencies because it doesn't really make soundwaves, it vibrates your body.
>>
Should I get an audio card or something for my computer? I bought MDR-V6's yesterday when they were $50, and plan on using them for gaming and some music listening (nothing high quality), but I'm worried I'll get them and hear background noise and shit I don't want to hear not related to the headphones.
>>

Lets sound in, blocks out no noise. Sound leaking out of the cups, they let out a fair bit of sound, like a set of laptop speakers at low volume

>>45394495

That price range gets you a bunch of bass-heavy earphones from China. Some are built better than others, some are more bass heavy than others. I don't think they get especially nice until the 100 dollar mark, that gets you some removable cables and a decent sound quality.
>>
>>45395232
As a rule, earbuds sound worse than headphones. They're meant for portability, not quality. You can keep them in your pocket with your phone or MP3 play, which you generally can't do with over the ear headphones. If you don't need portability, then you're better off with a quality pair of headphones, especially since it's easier to get decent quality headphones in the range of $40 to $80 than it is decent quality earbuds.

Thanks. Those AKGs look pretty nice.

Is the cable on those things durable? I've seen people have problems with their headphone cables before, though those might have been on cheap headphones.

okay so looking to pick up a new pair of headphones so looking to see some input.

I came from a pair of refurb v-moda crossfade lp headphones. Honestly those were my first audiophile type headphones and I was incredibly impressed with them.

One of my biggest draw was build quality. Because I'm pretty notorious for breaking headphones (catching cables on surfaces, dropping them etc) I really appreciated that the v-moda are pretty much indestructible.

was thinking about going them again, but I figured I'd see if I could get some comments and thoughts.

I already have a pair of corsair vengeance etc for comp gaming, and other headphones I've liked in the past were a much older version of the sennheiser HD 203

budget: would be under 200 but prefer more like 120-150

source: Computer, phone, laptop. Going to be using these mainly for my new travel job. so they will odds are be plugged into a nexus 5 or 7

Isolation: I'm less concerned about me hearing things around me and more concerned about sound leaking out

Size: Full Size over ear

Tonal: Overall preference is balance, but If I had to pick a specialization. Mid-range (the xfade lp were pretty good imo)

Past: xfade lp: Loved quality tough build, Loved the customization, loved removable cable (is a must), disliked how they sat around my neck while not in use, disliked how with some voip programs people's voices would almost sound like it was vibrating a loose part (I think it might have been the case because I remember it not always being like that)

Music: I generally listen to doujin music, ranging from jazzy vocals, to eurobeat, to a lot more electronic, drum and bass, game OST (IIDX), anime OST
ex: http://youtu.be/Bivx4yUsgjY http://youtu.be/kX248L0f6NU http://youtu.be/p82DqcWlzzY

Location: USA

If left to my own devices I'd probably step up to m100s on v-moda. I'm only replacing them because they were stolen.

What is a comfortable pair of headphones that sound good?

I'm using 250 ohm DT990 & DT 770 Pros and they are comfy, but the shape of the cups and the clamp force makes them pretty bad after 4+ hours. I wear headphones all day, everyday, so comfort beats sound quality.

I'm setting my sights on HD 558's since the cups are more ear-shaped and lighter due to the build quality. I realise HD 598's are probably gonna be better all around, but I'd want to see what else is out there before I make a decision.

Just picked up HD598's after the sale, and I am comparing them to my DT990's...bass is a lot of smoother for one. The build feels a bit cheaper, and while they're equally comfy on my head, the Beyer's definitely do feel like fluffy with clouds with the velour pads.

As far as sound differences go, does anyone have any experience with these?

HD558 have the same drivers as HD598 and sound negligibly different, so get the HD558 unless it's one of those rare times where 598 is cheaper like briefly on Friday. They're the only full-sized headphones in your budget which can be accurately described as "balanced" sounding, and they're very comfortable.

Hi guys,

i got these as they were said by /g/ to be good entry level headphones.. i have a few problems..

1) They are really quiet

2) They dont sound good at all ... I mean they sound like shit compared to my £5 in ear headphones....

3) They give me a HUGE headache/nausea if i wear them for even 20 minutes..

Are all over ear headphones like this ?

>V6=7506
For most purposes, yes. The only true difference outside of manufacturing variance is that 7506 has a separate ground for each channel.
V6 allows crosstalk, which supposedly sounds natural, while 7506 has isolation even between the channels.
>>
>>45402846
And those revisions may even be made in entirely different countries.
>>
>>45408005
The shared ground is the typical construction of a headphone and ground components per channel will merge together in the TRS connector.

I'm not inclined to believe that the crosstalk is significant in the V6, not more than any open headphone.
As another note, crosstalk "naturalness" doesn't operate in that manner, electronics will dump more noise into opposite channels in the higher frequencies, head shadowing of sound blocks out sound above the mid-range.
>>
What does /g/ think about a rockboxed clip plus + fiio e07k + Sony MDR 7506?

/g/ rarely says that HD201 is a good headphone. I have a pair and what you describe is familiar.

If you use Windows and have Realtek HD Audio, one thing to check right away is if they're connected as a "headphone" or "speaker". If it's set to headphones, change it to speakers in Realtek GUI. This might fix all of your sound related issues.

Other than that, you can use EQ. Start gradually boosting lower frequencies from 1000Hz to be +10dB at 100Hz and below. Reduce 5-7kHz by -11dB, 10-14kHz by -10dB. Don't use EQ in your audio driver software, use the one built into your music player. Needless to say you should keep all other "enhancements" disabled.

As for the headaches, their clamping force is pretty strong when new. Stretch them out by placing a few toilet paper rolls or something between the cups. Be careful as the plastic is shitty quality and can break very easily. Use the adjustments for cups to make them hover above your ears, maybe even sag just a bit.

Or you could just return them if it's not too late.

I'm guessing they'll start another one soon after, or something.

Very.
>I'm hoping for something comparable to AD900s.
Pic related is basically how they sound frequency response balance wise.
>>
>>45409955
They're not that bad, but on a good portion of tracks, compared to other more neutral headphones, it will sound slightly veiled. There's also a bit too much sizzle for my taste. They are less comfortable than the AD900 in my opinion. They clamp a bit more and put more force on the top of your head where the headband comes in contact with your head. The cushions aren't as soft as they look.
>>
>>45409964

Use earbuds with industrial earmuffs.
>>
>>45409955

Naw they're not veiled and they're a lot more comfortable than the AD900 which won't stay in one place on my head and has earpads which rest on my ears instead of around them, which isn't as comfortable as the 598 earpads which go around my ears.
>>
>>45409977
Thanks!
>>
>>45410017
You must have overly long ears and a not big enough head in relation to the model AT used.
>>
>>45410045
The pads do touch your ears on AD700/900s. How much they touch depends on how big your ears are I guess. They touch the bottom of my earlobes, but they still aren't uncomfortable at all. I have a big head and big ears.
>>
Hey /hpg/ I'm having this weird experience with my HD598. At around 7900-8900 Hz, the left channel is about 6 dB quieter than the right. When I hold that ear cup a tiny bit away from my ear, the channels become equal at those frequencies. What's happening here? What can I do?

>>45410337
You're experiencing the extremely normal phenomenon of shifting ear canal resonances as the position of the headphones changes on the head.
>>45410381
No, silly, it's not this.
>>
>>45410427
Is it possible to fix the shifting ear canal resonances? Adjusting the headphones every time I put them on and testing with a wave generator is too tedious.
>>
>>45410402

>>
Is today the last day of the Massdrop sale will we have time to at least check the Monday sales (if there are any in the first place) before the deal ends?
>>
>>45410458
>Is it possible to fix the shifting ear canal resonances?
Nope. This phenomenon comes with the territory when wearing headphones. The high frequency response of headphones will vary significantly at the eardrum based on the position of the headphones on the head.
>>
>>45410484
Perhaps in the future we'll have an automatic ear shape detection system that will compensate in real time by changing the direction of each sound wave.
>>
>>45410458
>>45410484
http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK701SampleB.pdf
This should show you what's going on here. Check out the raw frequency response here above 6 kHz and how much it varies from measurement to measurement, each one of which is taken at a different position on the dummy head. Response up there shifts a lot as the headphones move on your head.

What are you resting your headphones on?
>>
>>45410605
Just wear the headphones how they're comfortable and forget about the resonances. Those resonances will shift as you wear them anyways.
>>
>>45410570
It's for comparing the relative differences. At least if the result is consistent with the proper orientation then you can assume with reasonable probability that it may not be ear canal resonance. If it isn't consistent then it reinforces that conjecture.
>>
>>45410646
But the headphones are tight enough on my head that they don't move most of the time.

I've perused these threads for over a year and don't remember ever seeing the SRH 840s suggested (thought I do see them in the price guide). Anyone own these and have thoughts?

It's shit. Buy the DT880 (600 ohm version only), the HD558/HD598, or the M50. Don't buy headphones with exaggerated trebles, muddy bass, or lots of nigger bass. Also avoid headphones with recessed mids or hard to drive without spending $100 on an amp like that AKG.
>>
>>45410684
Even tiny, imperceptible movements will cause the resonances to shift.

>>45410832
DT250 80 ohm, unlike most Beyers, they don't have recessed mids.

I have to move the headphones quite a bit for the resonance at 8 kHz to shift noticeably, and I don't really care that much for the frequencies above 16 kHz.

Use: Music (electronic, alt. rock)

Price range: $200-$280

I am a fan of electronic music and so I would like bass and greaty all around sound. I DON'T KNOW IF I NEED AN AMP OR NOT. Stressing me out with all these different impedances.

I was thinking of getting the beyerdynamic dt-700 80ohms but why not get the 250ohm and get an amp? Same price, but I would need an amp anyways for the 80ohms, right?

But I found the AKG K272HD and they look like they have a good bass texture. The velour earcups the also very important.

I like velour rounded earcups.

I think I'm done analyzing the HD598 now after a full day of listening and EQ, and I'll stay with my previous opinion. They're good for $100, but I wouldn't pay more than $180 for them, which is what they were before. Compared to the AD900x, and after using EQ to make it more neutral, they are better with bass texture, and have more of a body in the mids, while the AD900x was a bit more snappy and detailed sounding. As for soundstage, the HD598 was the same for frontal depth, and better at giving spacial cues below you. The AD900x was better a reproducing sounds above you, behind you, and the depth to the left and right of you.

Overall in my opinion, the AD900x, while using EQ, is mostly better in sound than the HD598, also using EQ.

Good to know since I have an ad900x, and was wondering about it. I think people said akg70x have slightly better frontal sound stage, but I'm not sure if that was just placebo or not.

So if you had to rate the difference between them in percentage would it be like 5-10% difference where it starts falling into the law of diminishing returns?
>>
>>45412022
I was in a similar situation. Definitely go with higher ohms and an amp.
>>
>>45412165
I don't about AKG, but from what people say they probably do have better front staging. I use binaural test tracks to be sure of all of this, and I think the difference in the sound is large enough to tell without placebo.

Not too sure what you're getting at with the percents, but I would pay max $180 for the AD900x, and max $160 for the HD598 if it was just based on sound.

>>
>>45412307
Yes. But keep in mind that's due to the sound signature. If you EQ the bass and mids a bit, the "veil" will be gone. In fact, if you're used to the sound signature, it won't sound like a veil.
