How well does a X200s perform in 2014?

Tempted to buy one for internet/1080p films/music

Is the ULV CPU utter shit?

What kind of battery life can I expect under Windows or Linux?
>>
I want that.
>>
I use one with Linux. I don't use a bloated desktop system and use it for batch downloading, light browsing, etc.

I get 5 hours of battery life with a knockoff 9 cell

You sound like a faggot, so you probably won't like it.
>>
>>45387171
Well the resolution is shit so it's pointless to get 1080p films instead of 720p ones. Colors are also washed out, this is coming from a guy who has been using shitty panels for ages but these laptops just stand out. Performance is good if you're a programmer, if you do any 3D graphics programming then don't bother, Intel keeps their APIs at low versions.
The x220 is currently the best in that world.
>>
>>45387310
I'm not going to be doing any 3d shit on it, it's purely simple tasks.

>>45387306
Which knockoff 9 cell did you go for?
>>
>>45387171
Still great for the basic shit like web and movies. Slap in 8gb of ram and a ssd and you should be good. Battery life is ok in windows, 4 cell-2 hours, 6 cell-4.5 hours, 9 cell- 6.5 hours. Cool thing is there are options between a 1280x800 affs panel or a 1440x900 tn panel.
>>
>>45387441
I don't even know. It was $20 shipped on ebay and I figured I've spent orders of magnitude more than that on both marijuana and /tg/ related figurines..
>>
>>45387450
>1440x900
>£300 for the panel on ebay

Fucking hell

Anyway, looks like I'm going to spring for it.
>>
>>45387486
the first one that popped up for "x200 battery" looks like the same one
>>
>>45387450
>slap in 8gb of ram and ssd

Yeah. I didn't even do that. I left the 2GB chip there and have never even broke 60% of that.
>>
>>45387492
Just look out for a dead x200s with that res. Hell theres one now for $80 buy it now with that 900p panel
>>
>>45387573
and for some reason I get a HDD lock password icon whenever I try to swap the HDD. I'm going to try coreboot next year, when I have some spare time to fuck around with such madness.
>>
>>45387583
>tfw prices for hardware in europe is double/triple that of the us
>>
>>45387171
I have a X200 tablet.
The battery life is decent if you have a new battery.
Plays well with 1080p videos, linux, and even Windows 10.
Also old vidiya like Portal.
>>
>>45387875
Thanks anon.
>>
x200 here. The screen really is a piece of shit. But the replacement AFFS is pretty great.
Battery life 6-8 hours. Runs pretty fast with the SSD too. Never felt any stutter or performance drop. And the batteries go for $20 (check out laptopz-outlet on ebay, he was recommended here before), so that shouldn't be a problem. I had one for 6 months and it lost only 4% of its capacity.
>>
>>45387967
Is the screen really that bad?

I'm in the UK so I'll look for the same type of battery.
>>
>>45388053
Honestly, I prefer it over the glossy 1366x768 screens you can see on most of the consumer laptops these days. But the outdoor visibility is pretty bad with its low brightness. But aside from that I really think it's a great portable/dev machine. I can't speak highly enough of the keyboard though, and the general feeling it leaves with pretty much everything else. Maybe, but just maybe, the only better option out there (that's similar to it) is the x220, which has an IPS display, better battery life and it still retains the amazing keyboard feeling the older models had and the newer ones seem to have lost. No libreboot though, if you're into that whole freedom thing (it was a pretty big deal to me).
>>
>>45388172
Not in to freedom, but the keyboard is a big thing for me.

Quite a few listings I see are without chargers.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-IBM-Lenovo-Essential-G500-59370339-Genuine-DELTA-19V-3-42A-Adapter-Charger-/331196178406

Do you think this will work?

I'm not really a fan of buying generic chinese chargers, and the 'genuine' Lenovo ones are expensive.

Delta are a good OEM, am I right in thinking that Lenovo use the same 20v charger and jack across all of their older laptops?
>>
>>45388213
>Do you think this will work?
I guess. I mean, how hard can it be to make a charger? You're already buying a chinese battery since you don't really have a choice, so if it's going to explode it will explode anyway. And I don't know if they use it on all of them, but they sure do on my x200 (it came with an original charger). It's marked 65W 20V.

>>45388213
Another X200s user here. L9300 is a fine CPU and it plays 1080p Hi10p well. Remember to buy an SSD.

Try to find an used genuine lenovo charger from your local craiglist or something.
>>
>>45388313
I've done some calculations and by the time I buy a charger and battery I could get this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X200-Laptop-Core-2-Duo-2-4-Ghz-2-GB-DDR-III-RAM-160-GB-HDD-/151494051679

I would still need to get a new battery though.
>>
>there will never be a classic thinkpad with a good resolution screen with an aspect ratio higher than 16:9

I want a X61 with 2560x1920 or 1920x1440
or a X200 with 2560x1600 or 1920x1200

FUCK 16:9

FUCK THE NEW LAYOUT AND CHICKLET KEYS
>>
>>45388345
The price seems fine, go for it. Remember to get the SSD though (you might want to tell the buyer to leave out the HDD and reduce the price accordingly).
>>
>>45388395
That's a 4:3 machine and none of those resolutions fit. a 1600x1200 panel on a X61 would be awesome, but i don't know if such a thing was ever even made in that size.
>>
>>45388406
Really I just need a cheap ultraportable, it's not my main computing machine so wouldn't blowing money on a ssd be overkill?

though it would really make a difference i'm trying to keep it as poverty spec as possible
>>
>>45388053
No. That's probably some faggot with a stack of those screens trying to sell them on ebay.
>>
>>45388395
You can always make a frankenpad. I know people posted some pretty pimped out T61p's. I think there was something like that for x60/61 aswell.
>>
>>45388435
>That's a 4:3 machine and none of those resolutions fit

4/3=1.333...
2560/1920=1.333...
1920/1440=1.333...

?

These pixel densities would work assuming Windows scaling would get better. I just love these new high ppi screens and how clear everything looks on them. 1280x800 on the X200 feels so pixelated now.
>>
>>45387450
> Slap in 8gb

What model are you using exactly? The official spec says it takes 4gb max and it refused to work with the modules I tried.
>>
>>45388518
touche i did misread those resolutions. still, that kind of dpi didn't exist then and i doubt that particular size and shape is produced now, but i'm sure it could depending on how much money you are willing to pay for it.
>>
>>45388526
some corsair 1.5v 2x4gb kit. My x200s has issues posting with patriot rams though.

Well /g/.

Just bought myself a X220s in the end.

What to do now...
>>
>>45388697
*X200s
>>
>>45388681
Well shit, that's the same specs and vendor as the module I tried. I guess it's a lottery with these things.
>>
Does anyone know if these Kingston "Lenovo-specific" RAM sticks are supposed to run with the x200s?

http://www.kingstonmemorycards.co.uk/kingston-4gb-ddr3-lenovo-sodimm-ram-memory-module-ktl-tp3cs-4g
>>
I picked up a used T61 3 months ago to use for school.

It's been pretty awesome, good 1680x1050 screen, speakers, nice replaceable hardware, almost perfect linux support.
But the performance is lacking a bit, and the battery only lasts 2 hours (for a good conditon 6 cell).

I was thinking of maybe investing a bit more money, and getting something more recent, but from what I've heard, the quality of newer models has gone downhill. How does the T420 or X220 compare? Or X201 for the non-retarded resolution
>>
>>45387598
Can you access BIOS? See thinkpadforums about a no-whitelist reflash upgrade.
>>
>>45389040
An SSD can be moved to future notebooks. Old notebook hard disks eat leper anus.

New spinner hds are cheap and also run better, but if you don't need mad space there are cheap SSDs.
>>
>>45388875
As long as its DDR3 204-pin laptop RAM it should work with an X200s.
>>
>implying you need more than a pentium to do those shit

I have a X300 and the CPU is fine for those tasks
>>
>>45389370
I was actually looking at black Friday deals for SSDs, thinking of getting an Intel 530 240GB for dat reliability and low power usage in idle. Good idea?
