i know and use Python myself and haven't tried Ruby, but from what i gathered, it seems as good as Python while being somewhat more powerful language (minus some of Python's simplicity).

only using "end" is ugly, but that is just a matter of taste (and i also considered using whitespace awkward before trying Python)

Python has more libs and it's community is bigger
Ruby community has better standards and I find the language to be more beautiful (specially when avoiding metaprogramming)

I think Ruby is the better language because you can almost do everything is with it (except macros but that will always be a Lisp domain).

The problem is that Ruby can never beat Python because every math academic has learned Python. The excuse for that is that "it is so easy". Therefore the students of those academics will learn Python again.
