New Stupid Questions Thread

Why do I have to mount my partitions to mount when installing arch? I understand mounting glues it to the files system, but whats going on beyond that?
>>
posted in the last thread but it died ;_;

Can someone please explain to me why haskell has a problem with this

[ do {print x; putStr "\n"} | x <- [1..10]]

it should just print the numbers 1..10 out with a new line between each
>>
>>43473027
Whats the error.
>>
>>43473061

No instance for (Show (IO()))
arising from a use of 'print'
Possible fix: add an instance declaration for (Show (IO ()))
In a stmt of an interactive GHCI command: print it

I think the list comprehension has some default print that's interfering with the do statement
>>
>>43473106
Try adding deriving show to the end to turn integers into printable strings. (haskell beginner myself)
>>
>>43473143

From anything I can find, for macbooks, you hold down option when you first turn it on, then anything you can boot from is shown. Like the screen will show any storage with a boot able os or os installation cd, but the screen only shows the hdd with windows installed on it.

Well, thats what I'm confused about. You're not copying the contents of the USB. And you can clearly use the contents of the USB without mounting - I selected the install arch thingy from the menu and was able to use partitioning tools provided. So what is it doing exactly?

>>

if you're running the installer from the usb then the usb is mounted, after partitioning you need to mount the disk you're installing too so that changes can be written to it

the installation medium has it own set of tools. the installation target is a separate partition. you do things like partitioning and making the filesystem without needing to mount because they act on the block device, not the contents. at the point you need to copy system files to the target partition eg with pacman, it needs to be mounted so it knows where to put the files.

I don't even know what this is called but it pisses me the fuck off because it interrupts the way I write.

Libre Office -- Writer

I write a paragraph. I then move my cursor into the middle of a sentence to add some more words to the sentence. What happens is these words start erasing everything to the right of my cursor when I'd rather have it just preserve everything I've already written. It's not like in a browser where I type something and can click in the middle of a sentence to add length or a new adjective.

What is this called? I'm unsure of what formatting tool needs to be ticked or unticked.

My Asus 27" lcd monitor just stopped detecting my laptops HDMI out signal after it has been working fine for 6 months. When plugged in, the laptop acts like it has connected and switches to dual monitor extended desktop mode but the monitor just says HDMI No Signal. I tried my desktop on it as well to make sure it was the monitor, same thing happened. This happened after I did a routine plugging in or unplugging (cant remember which) of the HDMI cable from my laptop while both the monitor and laptop were on. I've done this hundreds of times with no problems.

Anyone familiar with this problem and know of any fixes?

IDK what you're actually trying to do....

Do you mean in the address bar?

>>43475545

This is probably what you're looking for. You have to name the input. that variable doesn't make sense in syntax.

<?php //Test GET
if (isset($_GET['testTXT']))
{
echo "The value was submitted as: " . $_GET['testTXT'];
}
else
{
echo "Test.txt not found";

$variable = 'test.txt';

echo <<<_TEST_GET
<form method="get" action="testText.php">
<input type="hidden" name="testTXT" value="$variable" />
<input type="submit" value="Get Some Text.txt File" />
</form>
_TEST_GET;

}
?>

Notice how the $_GET collects from the name of the hidden variable I placed as name="testTXT".
I think this is what you're looking for, but if not, please let me know.
Hope this helps.

I want to upload a video to youtube, and leave a pre jewtube compression version available on my vps.

Is there any way I can upload to youtube via a direct link to the mp4 on my site? Alternatively, is there any convenient way to just upload to my vps and then upload too youtube via SSH from my vps? I have a really stupid question: I have a local server with media on it, and like to find the drives on the network (the server is my media PC with W7) and watch video over the network from other house computers. Accessing shit is fine with other windows PCs. But I would very much like to have one laptop with linux (preferably a *buntu) also be able to do this. Is there a way to put a shortcut on the desktop of the linux laptop that will reliably open the media PC video locations? Because so far I have failed to make that happen.

I'm not hyper experienced with linux. I have dipped into various *buntu distros over the years but never really stuck with one.

How often do computer parts come dead on arrival. I'm thinking of ordering parts from across the border and I'm not sure if this is a big deal or not. Also, if a store such as newegg sells you something that's fucked straight out of the box, do they usually replace your item or do you have to buy some sort of extra warranty from the store themselves.
I'm thinking RAM, CPU, GPU etc. Not monitors.

Most places are pretty good about replacements. And most parts arrive in working condition. I'm wary of purchasing OEM hardrives from newegg because they frequently are just taped into several layers of bubble wrap (hello static buildup), but otherwise I don't have a problem with parts arriving doa anywhere. Sometimes you get unlucky and get a bad part. It happens.

>Anecdotes follow

Newegg has turned full cheapass in the past couple of years and asks you to pay for the shipping unless you specifically demand that they pay for it. Same thing with cross shipments. If it's within a few days of arrival they are generally more lenient, but past 2 weeks and it's annoying as fuck. Take pictures of fucking everything. They tried to claim a DoA motherboard I bought had bent pins, and I had pictures to tell them to shove it up their ass. I threw enough of a shitfit that they wound up giving me a 300 dollar gift card as well as overnighting a replacement to me when they normally send it 3-5 day.

Then again, asking a manager a bunch of information such as her full name, employee id, extension, etc and casually mentioning that I would be naming her in a small claims court filing while citing consumer protection laws tends to make those callcenter fucks twitch uncomfortably.

Meanwhile amazon will bend over backwards if something isn't right. I had some drives delayed and then ruined because Fed-ex apparently doesn't understand what zip codes are, then left the drives out in the rain after I asked them why the tracking indicated the package had randomly turned around and was on it's way to Kentucky. Amazon overnighted a full set of replacements without batting an eye.

The caveat is that resellers on Amazon are a mixed bag. Some are fucking wonderful. Some are god awful. Amazon itself tries to get it done and the people in the call centers speak natively.

You don't need to use a registry hack to do that. I use a program on my Windows machines called Autohotkey to bind Caps Lock to Ctrl (I am an Emacs user, but it's equally easy to bind it to ESC). Autohotkey is a scripting language for creating hotkeys and stuff on Windows machines. It's this easy to rebind Caps to Escape:

;; rebind Caps lock to escape
Capslock::Escape

This shouldn't be dangerous at all. Also you might not even want to do that. When I used to use Vim I bound "jk" to Escape in Vim, you won't usually end up typing that combination in Vim so it's perfect for escaping input mode. I don't remember how to do it but it seems like pretty common practice so it should be easy to find out how.

Don't download GPU drivers from the laptop's manufacturer's page. Get them from the either the AMD or Nvidia webpage. I see that your laptop also has an Intel one, so download it from the Intel webpage.

Either Remote connections are turned off at the other computer or most likely, that version of Windows doesn't support RDP.

Teamviewer uses its own protocol which is why it just werks.

You can try installing Concurrent RDP Patcher in the computer you are trying to remote to and see if that works. Otherwise, you are shit out of luck.

Also check ports, etc and all that jazz first.

She left the browser open on our laptop after he went to work this morning. I go to work after, so I usually hop on and do my own things on my real account.

Today, however, I was disgusted at what I found. My girlfriend is a troll. A really fucking nasty troll. She leaves horribly mean comments to all kinds of FreeBSD developers. They're filled with low quality bait, attempts at helping people with false info, she tears into unix beards, NEETs, etc. She loves to troll around places like #freebsd to discourage people from using ZFS, etc.

I was horrified. Completely horrified. My girlfriend is a nice, gentle girl who is supportive and kind. In our 2-year relationship, we've fought three times total. I never thought this is a behavior she would take part in.

But this is something else. It made me wonder what else she did on the internet, so I looked at the browser history to find her also harassing NEETs and relax otaku on /jp/. Telling them to "smoke weed", calling thier favorite touhous ugly and fat and stupid, etc. It horrified me to think this was the girl who I studied lisp with.

I understand trolling can be fun, we've all laughed at it once or twice. But this goes far beyond what I ever imagined. I don't know how to look at her. I've lost respect for the girl I looked up to and admired.

Good people don't tear each other down. People people don't do that in general.

I often open programs by typing their name in this text area. It's fast, I just need to press the windows/meta key and start typing.

But I have 4 hard drives, and non-OS drives are idle when not in use. This causes a 10-second wait for them to spin up (even though I'm not opening anything on those drives).

Is there a way to remove drives besides my OS partition from the index for this search?

Anyone actually let chrome run in the background? Aside from like, a few seconds faster of startup what kind of benefits do you really get? I don't think a few seconds is worth memory chrome eats up.

Just installed mint on an old laptop from 2008.
Everything seems to be working well, except video playback, because for some reason fullscreen becomes choppy while windowed mode always keeps a constant frame-rate without de-syncing, this issue is prevalent in VLC, Mplayer and "videos".
It also doesn't matter if the video file is 1080p 60fps or shitty old 320p, it all stutters the same.

Can I do something about this or should I just install gentoo?

thanks, i did get 2 sata cables with my mobo

follow up question

my mobo has a 4 pin connector for CPU while my PSU (corsair cx600) has an 8 pin

do i just connect the 4 pin side with the little notch that secures the cable so the other 4 are not connected at alll?
>>
>>43483326
There should be a seam in the middle so that you can break the 8-pin apart into two parts. If not, there's likely another 4-pin cable somewhere.

# Video
vo=opengl-hq:lscale=spline36:cscale=spline36:dither-depth=8:temporal-dither:scaler-resizes-only
hwdec=vdpau

Opengl has better quality and more options, hwdec=vdpau gives you the hardware acceleration.

>>43483344
yup its there. do i just connect any of the two?
>>
>>43483360
If it fits, you've got it right. Check the shapes of each pin and match it to the socket. Usually doesn't matter which one you use.

What's a good converter to convert videos for use on a PSP? My videos seem to have fine audio code, but the video codec is where I'm facing problems.

Alright, thanks.

The drivers are fucked

>>43483502
Probably, I'm actually scouring the net for linux compatible gpu-drivers right now. Intel is not making it easy.

thanks
ill give it a try. may still use the registry tho, so i don't need to keep running ahk.

betafag here. I have a monthly data cap with my isp. I was wondering if when i download a 3gb file through say a bittorrent client like uTorrent, would the download consume 3gbs of my monthly data?
>>
>>43484555
It will most likely use even more bandwidth because pretty much all torrent clients upload to other peers while downloading.
>>
>>43484678
Thanks, would a direct download be any different?
>>
>>43484796
Well, you won't waste bandwidth uploading to other peers if you use a direct download.
Some torrent clients let you restrict upload, but if the data cap is your main concern, there's really no reason to use torrent over ddl.
>>
>>43484910
Alright, so a direct download would indeed be easier on my data cap due to the fact that i'm not simultaneously uploading the same file to other peers, correct? But would a direct download be slower, and in turn use just as much data?
>>
>>43484954
Yes, correct.
It depends, a a download from a server with good uplink will be faster than a torrent with only a few seeders and vice versa.
But the speed at which you download the file doesn't have anything to do with how much data is used.

How to convert video to mpeg-dash?

Building a PC. For someone who doesn't game, but wants to generally multi task and do video editing, is a 64bit dual core 1.5ghz processor and 4gb ram alright? Probably going to be verging general purpose use most of the time. Current laptop has an intel i3 3110 and 6gb RAM but I think that's probably more than what I currently use that for. Never done any heavy video editing before.

>>43485067
Anytime.
>>
>>43485093
For a laptop that is fine

It's going to be my first desktop.
>>
>>43485333
Then you should be getting at least 6/8GB of RAM and a quad core processor. I'm sure what you listed is enough, however that is really the very, very minimum you need. Besides that, I don't think it would be that expensive to get something better
