Posting this question again.

What albums do you use to test new headphones?

Has anybody made a guide of recommended material?

I know that things like Rage Against The Machine's debut are often used.
>>
>>43366367

Aren't the akg 701's meant to be used exclusively for studio recordings and shit to pick out very particular sounds, hence the nobass.
>>
>>43366411
No, AKG K701s are for people who watch K-ON and other anime.
>>
>>43366406
Avoid stupid EDM stuff generally, and listen to anything that involves physical instruments.

I use Farm by Dinosaur Jr personally, the album is very loud.

>>
>>43366431
Electronic music is excellent as long as it uses crisp sounds and a real bass, just remember that faggot who won't listen to me.

Not you, that other guy.
>>
>>43366434
I saw that, just hadn't had the chance to reply.

Anyway, I wasn't asking specifically for recommendations, I was asking what people used.

Different types of music are going to suit different types of headphones aren't they.
>>
>>43366444
Fuck you, I'm glad CG is not here.
>>
>>43366457
Yea, but those three songs in particular are great at testing how a pair of headphones reacts to a wide array of sounds.

If you know how you like to hear those songs, then you'll know whether or not a pair of headphones is good or not.

Also sad but true by metallica is a really, really good song to use due to the high production value.
>>
>>43366472
I've bookmarked them for later listening. There are lots of bands that I hate that have rock solid production on there albums so I'll check that one out too.
>>
What does sterile sound mean? Isn't that a good thing?

>elmer'sglueymotics
>post headphone collection with timestamp to disprove CG
>oh looks it's the permavirgin CG blahblahblah

>>43366522
i would think it means nobass nomids just treble
>>
>>43366522
Do you want your music sterile or full of life like you're there?
>>
>>43366522
I think it means it has no character. Like it's so pristine that you aren't listening to a band playing, you can pick out individual instruments with such ease that it becomes almost clinical.

Might be wrong though. I listen to a lot of noise rock and production values are often raw and I like the roughness of the sound. Some bands prefer a clean sound and I just can't stand it.
>>
>>43366551
I'm in the same boat. I guess I'll have to avoid sterile headphones then.
>>
Anyone knows if the Koss PortaPro fits well on a head while running?

They are in my price range and seem to be what I'm looking like, I just wanna know if I can also use them while running.

Have a 2D girl as a payment.

>>43366522
Sterile = Etymotics

Google the two words together
>>
>>43366576
yes i use them for that.
>>
>>43366558
A good comparison I often use is Catch 22 - Keasbey Nights, which was then rerecorded with better production values years later. I hate how clean the new version is.

for metal: cephalic carnage - exploiting dysfunction.
that album has an amazing array of sounds that you'll find to some degree in many different kinds of metal. for example it has bass drops which is good for testing sub-bass extension but it also has very crisp cymbals so it's good for testing the high end too. it has electronic/noise elements, different vocal styles, sampling, even production shifts within the same track.

>>43366583

>>
>>43366551
You're pretty much right, but it's important that people recognize this as a subjective perception that is basically a buzzword. Alot of people would associate this perception with rolled off bass and highs, or with a headphone being "too neutral". some others associate it with a soundstage that seems artificially wide.
"lifeless", "dead", and "artificial" are other words people use to describe similar perceptions.
Personally I think most of the low-end Sennheisers sound this way.

The is the best way to think of it is like this. CG is angry, jealous and poor. If he hates something in the threads, it's because he wants it and doesn't want you to have it. CG hates the CD900ST, so I bought a pair and they are my favourite headphones. CG said the K701 were tinny with no bass, I bought a pair and was extremely happy with them, they are great modern headphone to use with vintage amps. CG said Etymotics were shitty ear dildos, I bought a pair and I enjoy them daily with no regrets. CG said Schiit sell hiss monsters, so I bought an Asgard 2 and I have been very satisfied. When CG said the K712 was niggerbass and stolen bikes, I ordered a pair and I'm waiting for them to be delivered.

Thank you CG.

This isn't really related to headphones as such, but does anyone else have a small bit of tinnitus? I'm scared it might be ruining my musical experience. I want to get some nice headphones but I'm always believing that this tiny quiet ringing will drown out any details.

I have a little bit of tinnitus as well.

I don't think it affects my ability to hear the music since I don't notice the tinnitus when there's a little noise around me or when I'm awake and concentrating on something else.
The only time I notice the tinnitus is when it's completely quiet around me (like when I go to sleep).

I used to have a great pair of K171's that went "missing" when I moved house and I've been tempted to pick up a set of K271's. I don't want to jump straight to AKG though and would like to try something else like I did with the HD25's.

I think for me it has more to do with earwax accumulation. I got a bad ear infection once by being dumb and using qtips to regularly clean out earwax all the way back to the eardrum and the infection got behind it. Had to go to a specialist to get it taken care of after my doctor was being a retarded hack and giving me overpriced diluted vinegar to treat an infection behind the eardrum as if that was going to do anything.

Specialist guy was just like "tilt your head" and stuck what must have been a tiny drill/suction behind my eardrum and drilled that shit out. Almost fainted from the pain, but afterward it was amazing. No ringing and I could hear better than ever. Kind of wished he had done the other ear because it was imbalanced hearing for awhile while I assume the eardrum healed.
>>
>>43367349
Maybe against other flagship models. They've tasted the best already so there's no need to justify it against models below it.

Boy, I'd love to get an ASBO for listening to music. It's bad enough with bookshelf speakers if you have a bastard neighbour who likes to call the police at 1 in the afternoon.

>>43367295
Sometimes, but if I see something else later I know I'll probably own it at some point.
Only headphones I've had buyers remorse for are some Audio Technica headphones.

I own a few AKG headphones K450, K81, K240, K701, K280 and used to own K171's. I'd like a set of K142's but you tend not to get buyers remorse if you have a reasonable idea of what you're getting. I don't think the K271's would surprise me too much if I bought them, and I'm not stupid enough to run out and buy the 702's Q701's or the K712's just for a detachable cable, colour, or earpad.

Compare that to something like the Audio Technica ATH-M50's for me, I've only had a few experiences with the brand and the sound. It'd be very easy to feel remorseful about these.
>>
>>43367459
I feel like I haven't listened to music until I've listened to some ATH-M50s. I've had Sennheiser HD280, Grado sr125i and Beyerdynamic DT770, but never the M50s.

It's an easy load, I can drive it fine out of my motherboard which has an op-amp in its audio section. The PM1 also doesn't leak out sound despite being an open design, pretty nifty feature.

>doesn't leak sound

That sounds weird. These HE-500s leak everything and placing ANYTHING near to the grills covering the driver will make them sound tinny because the leaking sound reflects back to the driver and to your ear. Say I stretch a bit and my shoulders get a bit close to the headphones, the difference in sound is substantial due to the sound waves bouncing off. There's no issue with wearing them on my head while I just sit on a chair but
>>
>>43368897
Hard to say, really different sounding though. I like the PM1 better than any Audez'e can with the sole exception of LCD-3F but I will probably take the PM1 as well because they are so much lighter and more comfortable.

>>43368967
>placing ANYTHING near to the grills covering the driver will make them sound tinny

Sound is unaffected if you place your hands on top of the PM1's grills.

I don't see many MC5 owners on /g/.

Are they good for a poorfag that wants a flat frequency response?

Same but I thought I saw some one recommend a decent looking pair that weren't in-ear before.

They looked rather cheap but people were saying they did the job well.

They're decent and certainly they're flat as measurements have shown.

Just kidding I own an ER-4PT, I find it amusing how quickly he responded.

CG's been dancing in the palm of my hand all along.

>hurr it's accurate to the diffuse field curve this means it's good
No: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/audio-precision-explains-headphone-measurements-and-head-related-transfer-function
>No known objective method produces a flat frequency response characteristic from an earphone which is subjectively judged to produce wide band uncolored reproduction.
>This film does a really terrific job of showing you that if you add up all the response curves of sound coming at you from every direction, you end up with a new type of response curve called the Diffuse Field Response. Generally, this measurement is made in a very reverberant room that gets filled with sound causing it to approach the head from every direction at once. For a long time after this response was identified it was touted as the best target response curve for headphones; some models even had "Diffuse Field Equalized" printed on the headphone. The problem is, it just doesn't work. Neither sound coming from directly in front of you in an anechoic chamber (Free-Field), or coming at you from all directions in a reverberant chamber (Diffuse Field), represent a good approximation of how you listen to music. This leads to the problem highlighted in the IEC spec, and the conundrum of subjective and objective measurement of headphone response yielding different results. I'll go on, but this would be a good time to watch the flick.

I called Etymotic today to inform them of the separation of the 3.5mm plug on my ER-4PT and to inquire about the RMA process.

I received the follow response back from a representative with the name of Neepsheep, his exact words: "lol."
