While wanting to write documents with an IEEE format, libreoffice kept going shit, i dislike the UI (I think it got better, though), it's complicated and doesn't open documents made in M$ Office. Kingston is far better for me.

I'm pretty sure Kingsoft is generally better, although I personally use libreoffice. Kingsoft office isn't open source.

libre and open office are both excellent and widely used in academic institutions. They are somewhat easier to use and more efficient than later microsoft office packages in my experience

They are somewhat equivalent to Microsoft Office if you want to do basic stuff like bold or center your text.
They lack a /lot/ of advanced features that are used in the real world (i.e. not academics).

Maybe I should have highlighted >>alternative<< instead of good, but I was going for the troll. They are good software by themselves, good simple word processors, but they are no alternative to MS Office (and other editing software).

Any user who uses MS Office professionally will very quickly find that this or that feature doesn't exist in (Libre|Open)Office.

I don't use MS Words so much as I use MS Excel. But both the performances and the features of Excel are no match for any FOSS software (and I have tried all of them afaik).

So I've always wanted to switch to linux but this is what is holding me back. Can these suites on linux do what microsoft word can? Keep in mind that I'm studying mechanical engineering along with physics, and I need to insert a shit ton of equations with other stupid little symbols. Can this do that?

Maple, Mathematica, Mathtype, shitty Microsoft Math or just the built-in formula editor are a better option.

I advocate LaTeX for anything technical, no exceptions. It's oftentimes a huge pain in the butt with its nonsensical error messages, but the results are better than anything else.
