>>43064140 Well are you living in a dorm or off campus and is your set up single room or double?
If you're living in a single then it's fine but if you're worried about your stuff and you don't know your roomate then I wouldn't risk it. I remember I was debating bringing a bunch of expensive stuff to my dorm so I tested my roomate by leaving a few dollars next to my bed and they were magically gone the next day so I didn't risk it.
>roommate brings over sketchy friend >leave to go to class >xbox360 is gone when i come back >roommate to high to notice > the controller is still there >make a plan >when night falls, i go door to door trying to connect my xbox controller to my xbox >finally connects >get the RAs to open the door >roommate's sketchy friend's room is filled with reported missing items >tfw when you help bring down a kleptomaniac
>>43064218 My uni is pretty far from where I live, though, and it feels like a waste to not bring it after spending $700 on it I just hope locking it or chaining it to the floor or something will be good enough >I tested my roomate by leaving a few dollars next to my bed That sounds like a genius idea though
>>43064249 If they've ever done it when I'm not around, they've always managed to return every bit of my stuff properly. I make my beds and I keep my stuff clean. My roommate was respectful and not a retard so if it ever happened, I've never caught them.
>>43064429 Yeah, except the overwhelming majority of dorm thefts are crimes of opportunity. If someone is walking around looking for open rooms to steal from, they aren't going to specifically go after the locked laptops, because it takes more work and dramatically increases risk of being caught.
If they're that determined to steal your stuff, there's not much you're going to do about it.
>>43064319 has nothing to do with being a bully. Im actually a nice guy that treats everyone the way I would want to be treated, but I come from a different place and if someone doesnt treat me the way I want to be treated I react fiercely. The US was a weird expierence for me, for example people insult each other without fearing consequences. I mean wtf, you can't for example just let someone call you an asshole in front of 10 other people, what will they think? So you gotta teach them not to do it. but anyway, I think it's really fucked up to steal from students. I mean if they steal shit from some wealthy kids, alright.. they can just buy another one but stealing from a struggling student is just fucking ridiculous. only niggers do that kind of stuff. I feel sorry for these victims.
>>43064676 if you don't beat someone up just because you fear prison you're a piece of shit and you didnt answer my fucking question. why do people insult other people in the first place? in my book, actions have consequences
>>43064743 they don't do harm? First of all, they do psychological harm why do you think homicidal maniacs exist? And second of all, if other people witness you being insulted, they don't treat you with respect anymore and this is how you people become betafags.
>>43064727 So you like getting anally raped by guys 400 pounds heavier than you named Trixie? You must if you don't care about going to prison for petty shit like somebody calling you a name and you physically assaulting them. Which by the way doesn't prove you're strong or anything. It just means you're unstable and probably belong in prison anyways. Also people probably insult you cause you're a ape brained retard that punches things out of frustration instead of using your intelligence to rationalize things.
>>43064766 >psychological harm Caused by your terrible upbringing. why do you think homicidal maniacs exist? See above.
>And second of all, if other people witness you being insulted, they don't treat you with respect anymore and this is how you people become betafags. No, I'm pretty sure they were already betafags if some guy insulting them destroyed their ego that much.
>>43064776 True, This! Beneath the rule of men entirely great The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold The arch-enchanters wand! itself is nothing! But taking sorcery from the master-hand To paralyse the Cæsars, and to strike The loud earth breathless! Take away the sword States can be saved without it!
>>43064766 Words don't drive you to murdering somebody. Mental instability does. Also punching shit doesn't get people to respect you. Being a honest sincere person with reasoning skills and not a fucking psychopath gets people to respect you and not treat you like a "betafag".
>>43064788 >So you like getting anally raped by guys 400 pounds heavier than you named Trixie? You didn't get my point. I said you're a piece of shit because you don't assault someone that insults you, only because you fear prison, not because it's wrong. I don't feel hurt if someone calls me an asshole but it's a different thing if someone calls you an asshole in front of 10 people.
>>43064835 >Words don't drive you to murdering somebody. Yes, they do. Bullies laughing at fat kids etc etc.. It does psychological harm.
>Also punching shit doesn't get people to respect you. Yes it does.
>Being a honest sincere person with reasoning skills not in this world, esp not in the US
>>43064872 >Cause every important figure in history is remembered for punching shit? No they're remembered for murdering people and Gandhi was a racist and retarded, he thought his nonviolence shit would stop the nazis if they invaded.
When I moved into campus I was placed on the ground floor on the nig side of town facing burnt down old apartment buildings with shadow people still living in the remains.
Within a week everyone had their games consoles + laptops stolen from niggers jumping in the windows. I pretty much kept my windows locked and closed even in the winter and locked my door at all times. Hid my stuff too. I was the only one who left without being nigged.
The only reason you all get robbed is that you didn't give a shit in the first place because mummy and daddy replaces whatever disappears.
>>43064964 >Had a large part in breaking up the largest empire humanity has ever known. And he did it without punching anything. More than you've ever accomplished. I love how retards always fall back on stupid shit like this when someone points out how stupid they are. >W-WELL WHAT H-HAVE YOU DONE >Y-YOU DO IT BETTER THEN! More people and attention is given to people who murder and have started wars in history than anything else.
>>43064964 >I just called you an ape brained retard in front of hundreds of people. I don't care it's an anonymous board. >Prove it http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/far-from-being-harmless-the-effects-of-bullying-last-long-into-adulthood.html
>>43064964 >That could be said of every single person every remembered by history though. My point is that Gandhi's activism worked because the situation was right, not because his activism was inherently effective. Non-violent activism was a strange phenomenon that would amount to death for anybody who lived in the age BEFORE the end of British colonialism. Gandhi pulled his stunt at the end of colonialism when the empire was changing its imperialistic policies and great social changes were happening.
I live in a 5 person suite. Someone is pretty much always around (usually me) so even if I didn't trust my roommates, they or anyone else coming into the room would have a hell of a hard time sneaking by anyone. If I'm going away on a break I lock my shit up but otherwise I pretty much always leave my shit running and never really log out or otherwise lock my account on my desktop. Only time that's been an issue is when one roommate went on #RizonIRPG channel I've been idling and sent a bunch of messages from my computer getting me a bunch of penalties.
>>43065023 And how many Martin Luther King Jr's were there before MLK? How many Hitlers were there before Adolf Hitler? It's not like he invented the idea of hating jews or conquering the world. Everybody that's remembered by history is remembered because they were in the right place at the right time. Not just Gandhi. If Einstein was born in the 1600s when the prevailing theories of the universe were that the Earth was the center of it do you think he would have gotten much attention for coming up with an idea of special relativity?
>>43064197 thats not his actual picture and it turns yellow and white ish if you leave it out for a long time even if its mostly clear when it comes out. That just means its been sitting there a long time.
>>43065141 My point isn't about the celebrity of people, my point is about the effectiveness of non-violence to garner respect. In the past before Gandhi's time, non-violence would simply mean death because "I am stronger than you and you are disobeying my commands".
ive been to prison. i got in 7 fights in 2 years on street. last year no fights. i break my hands on peoples skulls. and keep going btw there isnt much raping going on anymore in prison. being gay in prison really isnt cool
>>43065304 MLK jr's time was around the same era as Gandhi's - it was a time of social change from "the age of strength and might" where the men ruled and niggers would keep in their place. Before this age of great social change in the world, the world was ruled by leaders who commanded the people and the only effective form of resistance was by matching strength. We still see this mentality in Africa where the leaders are not respecters of people like the west are. If Gandhi tried civil disobediance in the context of today's warring Africa, he would simply die without having any effect.
>>43065353 Fucking hell man, fuck pedos but this dude didn't do shit. Here I was feeling cool about U.S. for dunking ass in watching Ninja Warrior (I don't know why I'm watching but it's cool), but this is fucking bullshit.
The basic principles: 1. Conceal how valuable your stuff is to avoid becoming a target. 2. Make your stuff difficult or inconvenient to steal, either by locking it up or by hiding it. 3. Conceal the fact that you've done 2, otherwise you have failed 1. Locked-up and hidden stuff is desirable.
Most laptops, desktop chassis and monitors have a Kensington lock slot, use it. Get high-quality thick ones or don't even bother. Insulated black cables are easy to hide because they look like electrical wires, they should be unnoticeable when well-managed.
If you don't have an OEM/sleeper case on hand, buy a boring, quiet case like a Corsair 330R. Stack books on it. Desktops rarely get stolen, but it doesn't hurt to take precautions. Use plain-looking peripherals, Model M / Intellimouse / cheap desk mic are ideal. If you have expensive headphones, carry them with you.
Avoid using more than one monitor, and keep it at 24" or below. Use DVI and a VESA-mount arm, the type that bolts to the desk.
Don't buy a $1000 ultrabook, buy an old ThinkPad instead. Nuff said.
Safes aren't useful unless they're either too heavy for a couple of strong men to carry, or they're bolted to the ground. Neither are practical in a dorm setting. Small safes are not worth the money, and besides, it is so uncool to be that guy who is paranoid enough to own a safe, jesus christ. You're honestly just better off keeping your valuables out of sight and not flaunting them in public. Small valuables can be hidden in a hollowed-out textbook, this is only modest protection against theft though.
Lock your doors and shit.
Keep an external HDD as backup, and keep it hidden. Alternatively, keep an encrypted archive of your stuff in cloud storage.
>>43063947 I lived in a dorm for a year a while ago and I had a decent desktop, four monitors and a laptop. At least at my school, if you did basic security shit like locking your door whenever you were out and closing and locking your windows you were fine. I was also lucky to have a trustworthy roommate who also payed attention to basic security stuff.
I'm pretty sure he's referring to DVI's thumbscrews. If you screw them in tightly enough, the cable is impossible to remove without pliers or a flathead screwdriver. It's deterrence through inconvenience.
Any other cable can simply be yanked out in one second (except VGA, but VGA is shit for other reasons).
>>43066268 It varies a lot. Just at my uni there are single rooms with their own bathrooms through quad rooms with one bathroom per floor. It usually depends a lot on cost and the age of the dorm in question.
>>43066268 Typical in American universities is two people to a room, but I feel like your roommate would be the least likely person in the hall to steal something like a computer since it would require them to be really good at lying and manage to hide something from a person who lives in the same room
If you have a roommate and they're a decent person, just establish ground rules on personal property and keeping the room locked or some shit.
If you have a roommate and they're a dickhead, get a cheap-ass used Thinkpad or a Intel-based Chromebook for $200 or less. The less nice and expensive your shit looks, the less likely they are to steal it. Even if they do, shit's so cheap that you can just buy another one. Shit, Thinkpads are so cheap that you could get one with an i5 for every day of the week and spend around the same you would on a brand new Macbook.
>>43066268 The university I'm transferring to this Fall has double and single rooms depending on which building you get put in, which is primarily determined by which year you are. Generally Freshmen get double rooms, Sophomores can get double or single, Juniors get single rooms, and Seniors are told to fuck off and pay for an apartment.
>>43066307 I lived in a suite setup, where two rooms with two people each share a central bathroom. I was lucky because my roommate was both a nice guy and a socialite, so he was out of the room pretty much all day except for sleeping and occasionally using the kitchen stuff. I have some friends who had awful experiences, like gigantic stoner roommates who would blaze it and then play shitty music on shitty speakers way too loud all day while being obnoxious.
>>43066319 >about to leave for class >roommate gets back from class while you're gone >takes and sells your laptop >get back >laptop is gone >ask roommate if he's seen your computer >"Huh? I thought you had it. It wasn't here when I got back. There's good news though. My parents just sent me some cash!"
Your college schedule is generally consistent. If he consistently shows up back in the dorm room while you're gone, it's entirely plausible for him to plan the sale without your knowledge ages in advance.
I mean how are you going to find out, short of going through his phone/Facebook/whatever service message?
Look, I'm not saying it's definitely going to happen. I'm just saying that out of anybody, your roommate would likely have the easiest time of stealing and selling your shit. They live with you for long enough to figure out how to pull that shit with minimal effort if they're so inclined.
the neighbors have visitors i guess and they alwasy slow down and peep thru my windows at me. i go outside and they drive off. tonight just now i went out with my maglite and screwdrive and walked over to the neighbros house down the road and started shining my lite in their windows and all over their house. some dyke came out and i yelled at her. she gave me bullshit excuse but i have warned her. i have a plan of wat to do next. im a savage.k may God giv me strength and may my enemies fail
>>43066476 basically this, tbh your roommate should be as concerned about your stuff disappearing as you are (and you should be concerned about your roommates stuff going missing too). You / your roommate will be the prime suspect if you don't trust each other
>>43066997 iif someone stole my shit l;ike that and i knew for sur eit was them i would just ambush them and break a ton of bones until they actually put cash or my item in my hand. consequences be damned.
what if you used the watercooling holes on the back of most cases (pic related) put a cable through it (pic also related) and hooped that through some whole you can drill on your desk (pic related)? (a mounting beam would work just fine aswell)
I'm always laughing at these threads since here in Europe we can just leave our computers, phones, calculators and everything to classroom/lab/auditorium while having a lunch or cigarette and nothing is stolen.
maybe 50 years ago, but Europe is a shitskin continent now and anything you leave will be snatched by jamal
The 3rd world west asian countries are the surprisingly good for not stealing in my experience, in Cambodia I accidentally left my wallet on a table in a public place with people walking by, came back 4 hours later and it was still there untouched
Have fun trying to offload a laptop with a ruined Kensington slot, you'd have to disassemble and sell the parts off. Anyone with half a lick of sense will report you to the police for selling obviously stolen goods.
>>43069080 >But don't you have gypsies? Yes we do. But those are not alloved to enter the school perimeter.
>maybe 50 years ago, but Europe is a shitskin continent now and anything you leave will be snatched by jamal >Do you live in a white area or something? We have our share of blackies, but there is only a few african exchange students in engineering and they all seem to be pretty decent people. Somalians on the streets are a completely different matter.
This is an actual pic from our polytechnics floor. Always wondered what exchange students from Israel think of it.
>>43069042 Yeah. I lived in a dorm for 4 years and I don't remember anyone ever having something stolen from another student. The only time something was stolen was when some non-student "niggers" broke in.
But I also think that buying a $1000+ laptop for college is stupid, when a $500 refurbished Thinkpad (that's including an SSD) does all you need.
>>43069443 If Romania wasn't such a horrible place the rest of us wouldn't have to deal with them on our streets. Romania should never have been allowed to join the union. Gypsies are your responsibility, not ours.
Good luck trying to sell a laptop with an entire corner of the case missing.
Most laptops have Kensington lock slots, they're built into the central frame which is usually made of solid aluminium, steel or magnesium. They're very tough to break without doing massive damage to the laptop, making it worthless.
>>43069515 >people want to be gainfully employed in jobs at reputable companies, universities and research organizations that require you to have verification that you have the knowledge you say you have.
This is a thread complaining that people steal laptops from dorms.
How is having something locked up more "alluring" to a thief? Petty thievery is an opportunistic crime, they're there to bust into your dorm and take anything that can grab within 20 seconds. Put a lock on your laptop, and they can't grab it without large and suspicious tools, and certainly not in under 20 seconds.
>>43069512 Of course they're gonna emigrate to rich countries to steal as much as they can, and live off of welfare Deporting does nothing to them, they'll simply be back The only solution would be if they were not allowed to leave the country at all, for any reason which isn't possible because >muh human rights
>>43067374 And how exactly would that prevent someone from taking off the side panel and just unmounting the hardware? You could then just get a cheap case, put the hardware in, and sell the PC for some nice cash (assuming the original PC was good to begin with).
>>43069640 I'm kind of jumping into the conversation here, but I don't really see how a Kensington lock would be very useful if you're not in the room. Bolt cutters are less than fifteen dollars, and the guy at the dollar store will remove the remaining lock if I told him I just forgot the combination. All told, I'm only like thirty dollars away from stealing it, aluminum body or not.
What the fuck Kensington locks have you been using? Any cable worth it's salt is made from braided stainless steel. I would love to see you try cut through one of those cables with scissors, or even those tiny wire cutters in your pic. It's simply not fucking possible.
>>43069643 >The only solution would be if they were not allowed to leave the country at all They wouldn't have to if living in Romania was remotely tolerable. Just look at the intro to Borat, this is what modern-day Romania looks like.
>>43069717 >Bolt cutters are less than fifteen dollars, and the guy at the dollar store will remove the remaining lock if I told him I just forgot the combination.
Why the fuck are the idiots here assuming bringing bolt cutters and power tools into a school dorm in the middle of the night wouldn't look even a tiny bit suspicious? These places DO have even basic security for fucks sake. Bolt cutters big enough to cut one of those cables quickly would be extremely noticeable, and you'd have to know what you're up against beforehand, it's not a smash and grab kind of crime, taking tools like that into a dorm would qualify as a heist for fucks sake.
Don't listen to these idiots OP, something as simple as a Kensington lock would reduce the chances of someone stealing your laptop by a huge amount.
let's be real here there are enough unsecured laptops that bringing along any tools would be a waste of time on the part of the thief OP, anything will do, even if shit isn't actually secured, as long as it looks like it is, you're going to be okay
>>43069777 Kek no it's not That kind of lifestyle probably still exists, in some remote villages in the mountains, which nobody visits and few people know about But even in Borat it's exaggerated The big cities are overall pretty great, problem is most of them have shitty sides as well, which are like gypsy hubs nice trips btw
>>43069800 Power tools are stupid. 24" bolt cutters fit easily into a backpack, something most students at a university have. Kensington locking your equipment to a table isn't going to go unnoticed, and word might spread. I'm paranoid so I would take that into account.
>>43069852 >Who cares, you're not paying the power bill They monitor power usage, you know. When they notice that their power usage went up 10-fold since you moved in, they'll assume you're mining bitcoins or something and have you expelled.
>>43069860 Do what? What exactly is in my power, as a citizen, to do to those gypsies? Go out on a killing spree, then get put in prison with their brothers and cousins? They can't be educated anon They just can't Most of them refuse to go to school or to learn any trades And they multiply like rats in order to collect state allowance I have to go now, nice talking to you anon
My friend left his laptop in the library on a 5min cig break and it was stolen while other people sat right next to it. The thief went to sit down at is spot, browsed through his books and then stood up and took the laptop. This on a relatively small campus in Belgium.
>>43069952 >Do what? >What exactly is in my power, as a citizen, to do to those gypsies? You're the ones keeping your corrupt politicians in power by voting for them.
>Go out on a killing spree, then get put in prison with their brothers and cousins? >They can't be educated anon >They just can't >Most of them refuse to go to school or to learn any trades >And they multiply like rats in order to collect state allowance >I have to go now, nice talking to you anon Fuck off to >>>/pol/ you racist fuck.
