The basic principles:
1. Conceal how valuable your stuff is to avoid becoming a target.
2. Make your stuff difficult or inconvenient to steal, either by locking it up or by hiding it.
3. Conceal the fact that you've done 2, otherwise you have failed 1. Locked-up and hidden stuff is desirable.

Most laptops, desktop chassis and monitors have a Kensington lock slot, use it. Get high-quality thick ones or don't even bother. Insulated black cables are easy to hide because they look like electrical wires, they should be unnoticeable when well-managed.

If you don't have an OEM/sleeper case on hand, buy a boring, quiet case like a Corsair 330R. Stack books on it. Desktops rarely get stolen, but it doesn't hurt to take precautions. Use plain-looking peripherals, Model M / Intellimouse / cheap desk mic are ideal. If you have expensive headphones, carry them with you.

Avoid using more than one monitor, and keep it at 24" or below. Use DVI and a VESA-mount arm, the type that bolts to the desk.

Don't buy a $1000 ultrabook, buy an old ThinkPad instead. Nuff said.

Safes aren't useful unless they're either too heavy for a couple of strong men to carry, or they're bolted to the ground. Neither are practical in a dorm setting. Small safes are not worth the money, and besides, it is so uncool to be that guy who is paranoid enough to own a safe, jesus christ. You're honestly just better off keeping your valuables out of sight and not flaunting them in public. Small valuables can be hidden in a hollowed-out textbook, this is only modest protection against theft though.

Lock your doors and shit.

Keep an external HDD as backup, and keep it hidden. Alternatively, keep an encrypted archive of your stuff in cloud storage.

Most laptops have Kensington lock slots, they're built into the central frame which is usually made of solid aluminium, steel or magnesium. They're very tough to break without doing massive damage to the laptop, making it worthless.
