Are you happy with your life?

What is your age and annual income/salary?

How many hours do you work weekly?

Where do you live?

>>
>>43058170
Fuck no.

People keep telling you that we need more computer "scientists"

What they don't tell you is that the vast majority of available jobs is being a codemonkey.

Do you want to develop mobile dating apps, webapps or internal financial management shit over and over again?

Just look up available CS jobs and ask yourself if you want to do that for the rest of your life
>>
>>43058305
Yeah I'm in Apprenticeship. My job pay me and also pay my (expensive) school.

It's really advantageous when you consider that the salary in France are very low compared to other developed countries.
>>
>>43058170
It's a highly volatile market and it attracts the "low hanging fruit" of the engineering departments. If you go into CS be extremely proficient at it and work harder than your peers.

It might also help if you major in CS and minor in a core engineering field. Like EE. The amount of time involved in both fields is relatively equal, but EE is far far more complex and a real test of your merit.

Programmer is what a CS graduate should be looking for, what are you talking about?
>>
>>43058520
Programming itself doesn't necessarily suck, it's more about WHAT you have to program

Developing a rendering pipeline? Yeah that's fun. but you'll never actually do that in real life

Programming yet ANOTHER database server backend ? The most mundane, trivial, repetitive and boring task imaginable

For some reason suits still think that programming is magic and requires some guy with a degree

>>43058571
>Programmer is what a CS graduate should be looking for,

Yeah no. Programming is just a tool, that's like saying a mechanic should become a screwdriver operator

What the fuck? It's like saying a mechanic should be repairing cars. You learn all that theory wank so you can produce good code and make a good program.
>>
im a senior CS major right now, honestly it's kind of easy at my school. not that much coding right now. before i got accepted into the major (doing pre-reqs) it was a lot of programming which i didnt like. now its just discrete math and algorithm analysis.

im not sure if i want to actually program for a living, but i think CS is the best degree to have..IT and IS are just retarded tier

I'm not familiar with the american CS education model. Did you happen to visit a community college?
Cause I'm talking about proper Computer Science, as in applied mathematics, not software engineering/developing, which is just a small part of CS
>>
>>43058664
no it's teaching a mechanic to work on a specific car rather than teach him how cars work (knowledge which can be applied to the majority of cars)

anyone can program without very much actual computer knowledge. you could probably code 90% of android apps in java without even learning about memory registers/etc. java doesnt require you to know very much.
>>
>>43058170

1. kinda. moar happy as the days go on
2. ~~~~~ still in school so doesn't matter
3. A LOT. CS is TIME CONSUMING. and you sit in front of a computer and think and code. And it's fun until you realize you have to do the same thing the next day and the day after that and the day after that and the day after that
4. WTF don't ask personal questions. AMERICA????
>>
>>43058702
>>43058716
Everyone needs to learn the theory, but saying you should get a CS degree only if you won't be programming is retarded, go get a math degree if you just want the theory and analysis, CS is a degree designed so you can take the theory and compute data with it, you need to program to do that.

If someone ever says "you shouldn't be programming with a CS degree" I'm positive their told this by some fancy uni that wants you to write another fantastic, but useless, paper on compiler theory so the Uni gets more recognition, but doesn't want you to actually get a job.
>>
I dont get it. Isnt every job repetitive and boring?
>>
90% of my time spent actually programming is trying to work out how to best implement something. it's not like you just go and wham bam 130 wpm and then you're done. programmers draw pictures (uml diagrams and similar) and shorthand code to try to make their implementations not retarded.

i only ever start coding once i already know how im going to do it
>>
>>43058783
I'm working as a janitor/handyman at a private school in Sweden during the summer.
It's hard work some days but I really like it because you get to do different shit almost every day and it feels good doing manual labor. Going to sleep after a day of exhausting work feels good man.

>tfw I'd drop out of CS and get into some manual labor profession if the pay wasn't total arse
>>
>>43058779
>Everyone needs to learn the theory, but saying you should get a CS degree only if you won't be programming is retarded,

I said you shouldn't get a CS degree if you'll be exclusively programming.
Using programming as a tool is what it's designed for while being a codemonkey is not a fulfilling life for most people. Yet most jobs will have you work as a codemonkey, making it a shit job, hence me telling the OP not to pursue a CS degree

>Are you happy with your life?
Yes.
>What is your age and annual income/salary?
40. At my last job (I had no degree) I made over $90k.
>How many hours do you work weekly?
At my last job I worked 45-50 hours a week, including occasional late nights and weekends.
>Where do you live?
New York City

I was taking classes at night and making $90k. I knew layoffs were coming so I started interviewing. Everyone asked if I had a CS diploma. I said fuck it, I'll save up and stay here. I was laid off with severance and got unemployment. I went back to school full time and all started a small side business. I have one more year to go and I get my degree. My side business pulls in $400-$550 a week, but I'm used to making over 3 to 4 times that. At the end of next year I'll get my degree and look for work. I should be pretty set. Even if no one is biting I can work on my side business which makes me enough to buy ramen noodles.
>>
>>43058170
I've worked in IT for 20 years. I keep up with the newer technology, I'm doing Android programming now and it is high demand.

Some factors to consider:
* Salary and benefits
* Hours worked
* Do you enjoy coming to work...or is it a lot of stress, office politics, constantly changing demands, deadlines etc.
* Are you learning at your job more than you could elsewhere?

I was making a good salary working in finance but the hours, stress and office politics were not worth it. What I never understood were my co-workers in finance who put up with all that but without a big salary.

If it's an office you enjoy working in, with nice people, where you're learning and doing interesting work, maybe you have options and the company is growing (but people are usually oversold on that hype), and your hours are reasonable - in this case, it's not worth it to go somewhere else for $5000 more a year.

I worked at one company where I was making $92000 and they had us doing real grunt work once in a while. It was fine by me, if they want to pay me $45 an hour to do tech support phone calls, I'm happy to oblige. It's one of the reasons a high salary is important - if your'e too lowball, they can afford to give you shit work. If you're being paid six figures, usually (but not always) you'll be doing decent work.

For my age - yes, its higher than the average. I know a dude in his 30s who works for Hitachi and earns about half of what I do.

Unless you work for one of the traditional big corporations (Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, KDDI etc.) the work environment is not as bad as people make out to be. Although my company is somewhat more relaxed, since the CEO is a fan of the western work style.

Not much to tell I'm afraid. Graduate from SMU with business degree. Borrow large sum of money from dad to open 4 star restaurant.

Rich people are now known as having sex and also avoiding the Internet? Why haven't I learned this before today? I thought the rich use every part of the Internet.

By american standards - probably. Housing is stupid expensive here. The other things are priced on par with most other places I've lived in.

>Are you happy with your life?
Just this evening my coworker, Rahjmid, got promoted to a higher position, such that he is now my superior. Rahjmid, not fully understanding English beyond the words "modular", "app" and "The American Dream", misinterpreted those words due to favor of his previous living conditions. As an unfortunate coincidence, he had bisexual urges towards anything that fulfilled the following criteria:
1. it has a pulse;
2. he can stick his dick in it.

Criteria 1 may or may not apply depending on how easy it is for him to stick his dick in it. He emitted the strong aura of curry.
>Age and salary?
32, we volunteer in the hopes of landing an entry job without the 30 required years of experience in MongoDB.
>How many hours do you work weekly
60
>Where do you live?
Illinois. May I note that some people on this board mistake our country for that of the third world, when in fact, it is not; third world people does not imply a third world country.

I'm not a good programmer
And I have that feelings that someone will say " then you are not a programmer "

I guess the stupid people are the ones who make big salaries.

The hard part is finding companies who'll hire programmers with no experience.

It's hard because programmers with no experience are mostly useless.

Top down programming is the most effective way to design your system and have the code documented with full system models. For me, writing code is normally a matter of translating system models into code - I don't have to think about a new design because I've already considered my design.

do you work at an investment bank? how dry is the work?
any tips for a college student trying to succeed in the NYC corporate world?

Is CS a fun field to get into?
What about research positions, etc.? Do you think they would be fun?
>>
>>43066473
No, a tech company.

Work is actually very interesting. I would guess working at an investment bank would be pretty dry.

My advice would be to do internships, and study before coding interviews. What particular things are you interested in? I might be able to give more advice for a specific area.

I'm studying computer engineering and had the chance when I was 19 to work at an investment bank (well respected one too) as a systems admin coop (intern)
I'm really struggling to find an internship in tech companies though, while finding plenty of banking IT jobs. Any tips to transition myself and to become more marketable to tech companies in NYC?
It's a little scary to me that my computer engineering degree will just result in a dry financial IT job never-minding the usually high pay.

>>43066727
You need to stand out as a programmer, e.g. take hard courses, open source contributions, research at an AI lab, etc.

An internship at a finance company involving programming would be better than nothing.
