Research is dead. Grant funding is at it's worst point ever, and yet every year it somehow manages to get even worse. That's ignoring all the other problems with academia. Of course, there's industry too, but industry doesn't do nearly as much hiring as they used to, and they're really only interested in biochemists, geneticists, and molecular biologists. There is pharma sales, which can actually be pretty lucrative and doesn't need more than a bachelor's, but it's super competitive, commissions based, and let's be honest, if you're a typical science nerd you probably don't have the social skills to be a good salesman.

I tried applying MD/PhD last year, it didn't work out for reasons I can only guess. I could have applied again this year, but I realized I don't want to start my career at 43, nor do I really want to be a doctor.

depends on where you go. for the most part its making sure the server is running and nobody fucks anything up. gets really boring after a few months (at least in my situation) so they let me bring in my home computer and i play steam most of the day while the kids are in class. my pay is extremely good because i work at a private school but a buddy of mine i met at ITT (never go there) works IT at a really large business and only makes about half of what i do

To be honest, the post-production industry isn't doing so well at the moment. Studios are shutting down, people are getting laid off, and companies are downsizing. The only companies thriving are the ones who have a steady partnership with big studios like ILM with Marvel, and WetaD with Game of Thrones. You see, these films are negotiated with a fixed price, but rare are the times when Directors are content with the first data push, so they require tweaks and additional scenes, so us post-production people end up logging a lot of back-time and unpaid overtimes. I'm lucky to even have my job in this fuckfest.

When they can't handle the movie by themselves, they get studios like the ones I work with and we do VFX with their team(s). Mostly texture work, shader programming and background replacement for them.

And a VFX Supervisor makes sure that what we're doing is what the Director or the Head VFX Supervisor wants in the movie. They tell me what they want in the movie, how it's supposed to look, and how it fits in the whole film, and I make sure my team is working to that vision.

I hate all you fuckers making this much money without working hard. Its so damn overpopulated here in india that even if you want to apply for a typist's job, you'll have to be better than 2000 other people who have applied as well. Here in india, many people with engineering degrees are unemployed, or working as a janitor (people with A grades on their report cards). Even if someone does get a IT job, the starting salary is around 6000$/year.

Coming full circle back to: you do not have to have a college education to be educated.

If you actually believe that then you are FAR from intelligent. Just another complacent worker bee flaunting your completely imaginary status on the Internet.

Damn, I been feeding the trolls again. :-/

Couldn't finish a bachelors due to spaghetti, and I don't have any current references for work. I'm about one potential candidate short of having an adequate resume for minimum wage work.

I might go back to school, I might not. But even if I were to just start self-learning while working, I would still be having trouble functioning, so I'm go to see a shrink starting next week.

None. I didn't have any when I graduated either.
Everybody wants programmers, almost nobody wants people to draw AVL-trees.

Spent almost a year as a trainee after uni to get experience. Didn't pay as much as a real job but was OK.
Now working, maybe starting M.Sc. next year while working.
