TempleOS was designed to be a toy for programmers. It was inspired by the Commodore 64. He was inspired by how programmers had direct access to all of the system on the Commodore 64 and that nothing was abstracted or protected from the programmer.

I mean that in the sense that if this guy applied his intellect to more practical things he could probably do more amazing stuff. He says himself that all he wants to be is "public" (second vid in the OP, about 90 seconds in). Granted writing your own OS, especially one based around the jesus will make you "public" though.

It truely is a subversive masterwork by beezlebub. I shit you not, I wonder if Terry is aware he is working on a conduit to hell, or if he is being misguided and manipulated by a false diety and angel? This is not randomly chosen:

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”

------------------
All you need is food, clothing and entertainment.

I can randomly crack open books or flip coins and make binary
numbers for picking from a book. I think it's an interesting thought exercise on how to talk to God with nothing but rocks. You can use them like coins or dice, but bandwidth is low!!

his interludes. This first glimpse, however, is a significant one, for it
shows the early development of that love of the drama which exercised
such an influence on his life and seems to have grown stronger as he grew
older, and of which this very preface, written only a few months before
his death, is such a striking proof. He gives us to understand, too, that
he was a great reader in his youth; but of this no ass

define 'amazing' -- if this made a profit would you consider it amazing? If it played games would you consider it amazing? I think you need to step back and assess what is merit in the human tradition. Its a constantly shifting assessment, fundamentally we are again in an age where coin rules decisions. Merit of work does not always perceivable in a current generation, and merit will almost never be an investment of time that results in profit or pleasure for others - these are just saleable ideas to human that can be perceived as having merit, but truelly may have 0. In fact most expressions of consumerism that are considered amazing, actually have 0 merit in terms of increasing the potential of human kind or giving great benefit to mankind. For instance we assume the combustion engine is pretty amazing, but we honestly don't know the ramifications of the invention of the span of the generations to come. If you discover that the invention of the combustion engine leads to the complete devestation of human kind in 40,000 years... is the combustion engine still considered an amazing invention? If so who is around to consider it amazing?

ASM is nothing special, just time consuming, and somehow easier to understand in some ways than a high level language. sub ebx '0' is converting a ascii value to a decimal value if its a digit, so you know its easier in some ways.

He's a textbook case of schizophrenia.

>Delusions of persecution – Belief that others, often a vague “they,” are out to get him or her. These persecutory delusions often involve bizarre ideas and plots (e.g. “Martians are trying to poison me with radioactive particles delivered through my tap water”).

>Delusions of reference – A neutral environmental event is believed to have a special and personal meaning. For example, a person with schizophrenia might believe a billboard or a person on TV is sending a message meant specifically for them.

>Delusions of grandeur – Belief that one is a famous or important figure, such as Jesus Christ or Napolean. Alternately, delusions of grandeur may involve the belief that one has unusual powers that no one else has (e.g. the ability to fly).

>Delusions of control – Belief that one’s thoughts or actions are being controlled by outside, alien forces. Common delusions of control include thought broadcasting (“My private thoughts are being transmitted to others”), thought insertion (“Someone is planting thoughts in my head”), and thought withdrawal (“The CIA is robbing me of my thoughts”).

It's hard to explain, he's not really hostile it's just an outburst. It's not like everything he says is what he believes, it could even be the opposite at times.

>What do you mean by "terrifying", though?
Imagine how you are now, and imagine being that way trapped inside someone like Terry. There's a chance he's fully aware of himself and his actions but unable to do anything about it. You can hear the stress and toll it takes on him through his voice alone. Imagine actually hearing god speak to you and constantly judging you and your actions along with other people talking to you. He thinks that people are out to get him and he's deathly afraid to fail. These are are legitimate concerns for him, there may be moments of clarity when he realizes how insane that is and that can only be worse. It's like realizing you've lost it and there's nothing you can do about it.

Here's a different example that might help you understand.

b) Forcibly held in an institution, being drugged with barely any intellectual stimulation?
I know what I choose and I've been in an institution so I know what it's like.
>>
>>43001392
Well, yeah.
TempleOS mostly seems to be a reaction to the absurd complexity of modern computing.
Hence what he says in the last video linked in the OP "You can see the light at the end of the tunnel." As in you can hope to understand the system in a finite time.
>>
>>43001444
Why are you so sure a prolonged course of drugs can't substantially improve his situation? A few months of being forcibly held until you're good enough to go out on your own (ie take meds on your own) and have some normalcy?
>>
>>43000856
The moments of clarity are the worst. My stepfather is in an advanced stage of multiple sclerosis and aside from the general symptoms (depression, loss of motor skills, problems with his vision, the works) he's also been psychotic since a particularly bad nervous breakdown. For him this basically comes down to constant fear and extreme paranoia and he is unable to realize how absurd the things he's imagining are. Every now and then he's actually aware of his situation and how paranoid he's been and it's depressing to no end for him when he realizes it.
>>
>>43001516
That's what you get for eating loads of meat and dairy.
>>
>>43001478
Schizophrenia has a very poor treatment outlook.
The most widely used anti-psychotic drugs like only treat the symptoms, dull your mind and come with a vast array of side effects.
Take for example Amisulpride:
- Extrapyramidal side effects (e.g. tremor, dystonia, akathisia, etc.)
- headache
- somnolence
- insomnia
- elevated serum prolactin

It's inhumane to force anyone through this as long as he's not hurting anybody.

I'd rather go crazy than take this shit again.

Depending on the situation, just strapping someone down and pumping them full of meds isn't gonna help. Sure, it'll help for a while but eventually you will have to keep increasing the dose for it to remain effective.

I'm not talking from a practical standpoint. I'm talking from the standpoint of the actual algorithm.

A lot of things are optimized by gcc (tail recursion is optimized even with -O1 it appears) but that doesn't mean your algorithm was any good, and that doesn't mean every compiler performs the optimization.

(declare (optimize (safety 3))
,@params)
(progn ,@(butlast body)
(the ,(car name) ,@(last body)))))

(safefun (fixnum hello) ((fixnum n)) (print n) (+ 1 n))

>>43005154

A recursive algorithm is elegant and fast, it's just horribly space-inefficient. With tail call optimization you don't have to worry about that, or even the overhead from a function call. Therefore it's just elegant and fast.
>>
Hi, losethos. Thanks for stopping by. I was wondering whether you're willing to talk about whether you believe schizophrenia has influenced the development of the OS. Do you think it is a relevant factor in the way the OS turned out? Do you tend to code while in the midst of a psychotic break or while in the grip of a delusional mood, or do you code when not within a delusional atmosphere?

God said 640x480. Realism is over-rated.

I really like this line.

With TCO it's essentially an approximation of what any sane person would write using a FOR loop, just with less assignment.

And I don't think anybody (who is credible) is recommending that TC/natural recursion is ideal for all algorithms.

TC can be thought of as a somewhat more general mechanism for performing various kinds of iteration, but it can be a little complex.
In Common Lisp, for example, you can get into situations where you can't exactly be sure if you'll get a tail-call optimization due to it not being defined in the spec.
