Hey.

My 21st is coming up, and my parents are getting me a new laptop. It's got to be <£1000, it's got to have decent battery life, and be <15" screen.

I am thinking a macbook pro (inb4 macfag lele) or a thinkpad, but I can't find a thinkpad that meets my requirements.

Any suggestions?
>>
You won't get a good MBP for that much.

You shouldn't be spending more than half of that on a ThinkPad.
>>
oh, and by the way, I am talking about the macbook pro pre-retina, so I can upgrade HDD and RAM etc
>>
>>42983436
T420
or
X220

They only cost around $350 and they will outperform many modern macs because they don't use a voltage-starved CPU. Battery life are amazing on these models of ThinkPads, you can get up to 18 hours on the X220 with a 9 cell battery with slice, 15 hours on the T420 with the same battery options.
>>
is it a requirement for thinkpads to look like ugly pieces of crap? They're ideal apart from looking how they do...

Is there a thinkpad that doesn't look absolutely disgusting?

plus most thinkpads that I've seen lack HDMI; WHY DO THEY LACK HDMI IT'S 2014!?

Because DisplayPort is better.

Hmm my parents are paying for a laptop. let's see:
>$200 piece of shit that'll break after a month
>$1200 workstation approved by Jesus himeslf

I wonder...

Come on man

This,
There is a fine line between consumerist shitbooks which break from sniffing the very magnesium from the motherboard, and then there's rugged, take me everywhere unstoppabooks

What a spoiled shit. Is it a britbong thing to get gifts at 21 or something?
>>

HDMI is useful for watching movies etc when I am round at friends houses, they all have a tv with a HDMI port. Just makes sense to have it.

Talking about a used Macbook Pro, right?

I got my Eee 1225b on eBay for $200.

Can do everything a college student needs, word processing, research, photoshop.

I have had upwards of 16 tabs open in IE 11 before, with no noticeable stutter.

It can do SOME gaming, but that's not really my suit anyways.
>>
so the build quality of MBPs are shitty? I'm not exactly going to be throwing it about or anything. How badly are they built?
>>
>>42984440
The Retina MBP and MBA are both a lot more durable than the Regular MBP, the metal is like 5x thicker. It's incredibly easy to dent the MBP if you have one of the old ones.
>>
Definitely go with the macbook. The refurbished Pro 13" 2013 with a 256gb ssd and 8gb RAM is $1300 USD, I don't know what that is in your fake currency.

Current Air and Pro Retina are hilariously well built, will take most of your shit. Get a Squaretrade warranty if you're scared of shattering the thing
>>
>>42985054
is the build quality worth the fact I can't upgrade my ram though?

Brick of a laptop. Works alright. Ubuntu was a horrible choice to put on this cause of performance bloat.

Just apt-get install a non-compiz based DE, now you'll have a decent OS.

This is why you don't belong on /g/
This is why you need to stop pretending you know anything about computers

Computing has never been, and will never be about making a fashion statement. Having a pretty pink bow on your computer will never make your work any better, or faster.

Decided to go with xfce, always liked xfce
>>
>>42985492
Here I was thinking that the pretty aluminum casing made it run faster.

I just don't want a ugly as fuck laptop. It's not hard to ask for a laptop that doesn't also stop girls talking to me.
>>
>>42985613
The fact that you think what laptop you have will make girls not talk to you is why girls wont talk to you.
>>
>>42985613
Do you really want to talk to the people who would refuse to talk to you over something as petty as how your tech looks?
>>
>>42985644
Okay, I've read up a lot about people with aspergers and I realise that you have problems understanding when something is being said literally or not, so it's okay, i'm not mad; don't worry about it.

>Decided to go with xfce, always liked xfce
Sure thing, I don't really mind what people prefer, but Unity sure isn't the most appropriate for most laptops.
>>
>>42983752
DisplayPort is better.
2014 ThinkPads also have Thunderbolt, which is backwards compatible with DisplayPort, and doubles as an extension to PCI-e.
Basically, your ideal port is a piece of shit that was deprecated the moment it came out and has only survived to this day due to the dumb luck of coming out faster than DisplayPort and being newer than DVI.
>>
>>42983468
15 in MBP non retina isn't sold anymore. You'd have to get them second hand or refurbished.
>>
Get an Ideapad. They're powerful, attractive, and some of the ruggedness from the Thinkpad line rubbed off on them. Not to mention that awesome Accutype keyboard.
>>
>>42983896
boxy laptops with those delicious boxy corners are the most delicious

basically most business laptops, and they have the best build quality.

Uh, they still sell the mid 2012 MBP in england, they're all over the place.

1. Check out the new ASUS Zenbook UX303. It's fucking stunning and theres a model selling for the price range you wanted.

2. Dell Inspiron. It's not as stunning as the ASUS, but it's good looking as a Macbook I guess.
