ANother anon posted a LWN article from december showing a gstreamer bug that allows malicious websites to run arbitrary code without any input from the user.
Has this been fixed? What does this say about the state of security on the linux desktop?

Hey guys, I've to download SQL Server 2016 ISO as homework, and open it in Virtualbox.
So I made a new machine on virtual box and added the ISO file.
As soon as I try to start the machine I get this error:
FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted.
What in the hell am I doing wrong?
>>58840751
Install it on your real machine

What do you mean by that? On my own laptop or... Teacher told me to not use it on own laptop.

cause it's a botnet
It probably stopped a service you require. Read the readme. It stops a lot of stuff.
Though it keeps basic stuff like Search and Firewall up.
One of these borked it

install windows server 2016
>>58840584
I guess it wont face such problems, yeah, but is it really usable as desktop OS?
I mean, I would rather expect it to come rather barebone and would require setting up everything manually.
>>58840584
windows server 2016 has a massive loss in performance. Linus proved that.

It's code written by an actual large software development and distribution company.
Yes, they do.

Anyone else curious about this? Does it hurt? How much does it cost? And is it covered by my health insurance?
I swear to kek I just had to make a password with 12 fucking characters, at least 1 of them being a capital and a number and a symbol. Fuck off.
>>58840460
Just get the chip bro.
I don't get the point of forced overly complex passwords, if the passwords are hashed with md5/sha/whatever wouldn't it be safe to just tell your users not to use passwords you can find in a dictionary?
can someone give me a quick rundown on how file name for downloaded images are selected?

"Bill. It's Trump here. It's time. Activate the Linux backdoor."
Honest to god there is truth to it. The OpenSSH code for example is not automatically secure. Most people don't know it can be very easily backdoored if the server administrator isn't an expert on the latest techniques.
>Iniciate order 66
Bill. Drumpf here. Deactivate windows backdoors.

I can't sir.
I want to install Linux. Problem is, I have a STRIX 1080 and a z170p motherboard. Absolutely no Linux distro I've tried so far works with these pieces of hardware. Either the installer just doesn't load, or it does but the mouse is stuck at the top left corner. Installing the recommended NVIDIA drivers just causes a login loop. WHAT DO I DO?
>>58840050
>WHAT DO I DO?
INSTALL GENTOO
Why do you want to install Linux with that hardware?
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Linux desktop security is at least a DECADE (10 fucking years!!) behind Windows 10 desktop security! If you use Linux as your main desktop OS, you're MUCH LESS secure than if you use Windows 10!
>This was too easy. It should not be possible to find a serious memory corruption vulnerability in the default Linux desktop attack surface with just a few minutes of looking. Although it's hard to say it, this is not the kind of situation that occurs with a latest Windows 10 default install. Is it possible that Linux desktop security has rotted?

There is only one solution. OpenBSD. Or better yet, delete your computers.
>>58840059
OpenBSD doesn't solve anything. Problem is desktop environments not the kernel or the OS itself.
>>58840085
If DEs are the problem why does OP say Linux?
