Anyone know a good site explaining the difference between different package managers (like how they resolve dependencies, what they use as a local database etc) and the differences in package formats like deb vs rpm?

We have a fairly complicated deploy process at work and I'd like to figure out how complicated it is to just create debs.

Does a lightweight distro like Lubuntu really make that much of a difference on a modern notebook?
I've been wondering if using something arch or straight ubuntu will have any significant impact on the battery life of it per daily use. Or is lubuntu made with very outdated machines in mind?

I know this isn't '/g/ - technical support', but I have a really strange issue that's difficult to look up online elsewhere...

I'm trying to transfer some music on my phone's SD card onto my reformatted PC, but some artists/albums aren't showing up when I plug in my phone in Windows. However, the music player app on my phone recognizes that these albums are there, and I can even see them in the phone's file explorer.

Any ideas?

Anon, it looks like he is using Windows 7. Other options are literal garbage compared to it, so your suggestion seems to be moot.

My browser keeps randomly telling me page encryption is broken when some pages in the same domain are not.

Like some threads on here will show insecure connection, and others will not.

Probably mitm'd, but what's the best way to deal with it?

Do I sign up for VPN or just try and ignore it assuming it's LEO or some other good guy?

first thing to check is if your local time on the system is synced correctly

if your system's five minutes fast, your browser will bitch on and off about security certificates

>>58846677

This is what I was thinking. Any good secure distros for simple web browsing? I know that's the main vector, but ubuntu seems a bit bulky for my needs and tails seems like overkill.

>>58846685
Thanks. That's good to know. When I've noticed it I haven't really had time to do much investigation but I'll check this out.

What is the best way to pirate movies and shows and such? I usually use vuze and just go on piratebay but I've been recently getting emails from the ISP about them seeing that we are pirating stuff. Is there anything I can do to stop it or should I just stop using piratebay?

pay for a vpn. you will stop getting e-mails and the $10 per month costs the same as a netflix account - plus you actually own your movies.

Yeah, do not use pirate bay. My isp also sent us messages about it so I switched to iptorrents.

>>
>>58846508
if you're too young to use youtube-dl you're too young to use youtube

here's a cheat-sheet:

youtube-dl [url]

-f Format
-F Lists formats of URL

-x Extract audio (requires ffmpeg)
--audio-format vorbis
--audio-quality [0-9, 0 being best] OR [bitrate like 128k]

--recode-video [ogg or mp4 preferred]
-k Keep video

--add-metadata to video
--embed-subs to video [MKV and MP4 only]
--fixup [fixes known issues]

--playlist-items [1-4,6,7-9]
-i ignore errors

I'll be bumping this thread to ask, is youtube center fucked for anyone else?, videos won't load on dev build 542

My brother was telling me about the other night, something woke him up. It was his computer turning on in the middle of the night and playing a YouTube video.

The account name was Russian as he reclaims and he describes the video as a guy similar looking to CrazyRussianHacker with a weird mustache, a yamaka/KKK hood hybrid hat. There was a picture of some guy, floating meditating with a bunch of skulls and goat heads floating around him. The man speaking sat in a chair, but was sort of knelt over with his hands in a sort of praying manner.

My brother imitated the language and says it was Russian but the way he imitates it, it sounds arabic. Does anyone have any clue as to what this could be whatsoever? We tried finding the video, and there was nothing.

Why'd the computer hacking "scene" die out among western teenagers? It seems like "hackers" these days are 30-something men with advanced degrees on government payrolls, and/or professional criminals from places like Belarus.

Hey /g/, I got a problem with my DVD player.

One of the component connectors isn't functioning. Not the green/luminance one though, the blue one.

So I need to figure out a way to make it work better. Cause no matter what I try, everything just ends up looking wantonly purple, one shade or another. I dug up an S-video to composite cable which fortunately only seemed to transmit the luma signal, but plugging that into the Pb connector just makes it a stronger warmer purple like every other way of doing it does. It doesn't make it look interesting at all. And the damn thing keeps failing to give me a proper duochrome image!

So I'm not sure what to do. If I get a cheap S-video cable and solder the chroma connection to an RCA cable, will it look like something? Or can I get split RCA cable and let the Pr signal go into both PbPr and get a duochrome image like that?

Ewww, buy a DVD player?

But the TVs seems to be one of those new ones with a botnet in it, if I get a modern device with a digital connection, it'll presumably be better able to see it.

scheme is the only programming language worth learning a shit about. while everybody else is slowly killing themselves learning ruby and java, you'll actually learn how a computer works.

or you could just learn C
