So now that Ars has gone totally left, where can you get tech news without left-wing spin?
>>58860255
>tfw no news sources without political bullshit ingrained in every other article.
hackernews
>>58860369
mmmmm
and explain why you use it.
>>58860240
It just works.
>2017
>unironically using DVD's
ImgBurn
It just werkz
wodim
But optical devices are archaic trash anyway, use new technology like usb and old utils like cat or dd.
>tfw your $500 monitor arms come in only to have a bracket that does not fit the girth of your desk, even though it was supposed to
Shuffle me off this mortal coil.
I don't think you need to make another thread because of this
>>58860223
>crap book

>having too much girth
16:10 or 16:9?
>>58860209
4:3
>>58860209
16:10 is very, very welcome at 24" and below. At 27" and at least 2560x1440 16:9 is just fine too, you have a lot of vertical pixels anyway so it doesn't feel cramped like the lower 16:9 resolutions.
>>58860209
>16:10
>Not 8:5
shiggydoodiggy
Good luck finding anything above 1080p60 in 16:10
3:2 is best ratio though.
What's the /g/ suggested storage solution for photos?
I bought a new laptop for my sister, it has 256gb of storage, but her old laptop had 512gb. Most of the capacity is taken up by her photos after we deleted all the pirated movies and unnecessary apps but but we only have 12GB left to work with if I migrated the entire thing.
So she has 500GB of pictures? Doubtful
>>58860114
Use a program like winderstat or Spacemonger to get a nice visual representation of the HD.
Its probably mostly windows update files, or porn.
Windows I assume? Run the full cleanup via Disk Cleanup
Otherwise you can use google pics as a backup, but you will need to pay for storage, and upload the full uncompressed method which takes a lot of time
>>58860147
not exactly, but her user dir is about 240gb big after culling as much as we could. I ran it through an app like windirstat to identify what could go.
I was mostly wondering if google photos is a good solution instead of storing everything locally in an external drive
Is chromium a botnet just like chrome?
>this discussion again
The short answer is maybe.
The long answer is probably.
The /g/ answer is Jews are spying on you no matter what browser you use.
>>58860094
Honestly who cares?
I've been shitposting, using racial slurs, watching BDSM porn, googling weird stuff, and typing all sorts of personal things into my computer that I'd never want anybody who knew me IRL to know for almost 2 decades now. Has any of this ever come back to haunt me? Nope. I don't care if Bill Gates knows I'm researching home remedies for my IBS or watch fat girl porn.

Not yet
Build this computer a year ago and never gave me any problems. Recently though it won't start up completely. The fans should spin and the light would turn on for a second or two then turn off and try again every 7 seconds or so. I thought it was all the dust so I cleared it out with compressed air but it's still doing it. Anyone know what it is and how to fix it? Thank you.
>>58860075
power supply too weak
>>58860075
Try reseating the memory and power supply connections to the Mobo. I would assume it is a motherboard issue if that doesn't work. I doubt it is a power supply problem, the computer needs almost no power to boot.
>>58860075
Your CPU is overheating, reapply the thermal paste.
I just realized my HDD is 8 years old. Should I replace it?
>>58859977
yes you need a 1tb ssd
>>58859977
If it works, no.
>>58859977
as long as your data is backed up, don't worry about it.
Does anyone here ruined their eyes looking at their screen? Is it even possible?
>>58859839
The only damage you can really do is making yourself nearsighted if you spend a lot of time looking at things close up (computer screens, books...) when you're a young kid. But that damage is done already and its not like glasses are the end of the world.
>>58859980
And what about blue light? Why is there anti-blue light glasses out there?
>>58860219
People will buy anything
>these new captchas that say "click all the windows"

After months of catfisting, AT&T (the only isp in my zip code) finally told me that there is no way to get wired internet to my house at the present time and there is no future plan to expand their network in my town.
They suggest satellite internet which I'm not really excited about, but if no one else wants my money, I might as well throw it into outerspace.
>>58859698
Move.
>>58859719
can't b/c work and money
>>58859698
Get ready to get raped, op. satellite is some expensive shit
Looking to make my third monitor a vertical monitor. Don't want to spend too much on it as it'll mostly be fore looking through forums, chan, and document reading.
Should I invest in a new one or is there older models I can find and buy? I know of vesa mounts, but a lot of older monitors may not be compatible with it, so something that already allows rotation is preferred.
honestly just buy one with a vesa mount. The built-in ones usually suck, and having a clamp-mount is so much cleaner.
Lots of new monitors don't have vesa mounts, so they either need adapters or won't work at all.
>>58859772
When you say buy one with a vesa mount, you're saying to buy a vesa one and then a compatiable one OR are you saying get one that already has a vesa mount? But from your post, you're saying to avoid the ones with build in vesa mounts?
>>58859685
I have three monitors. all three are positioned vertically. horizontal screens are for plebs. if you have a TV, you don't need a tiny horizontal screen with shit vertical resolution.
just get an older monitor with a stand that can be rotated into vert position. they are super-cheap now.
>2 year old motherboard shits itself for whatever reason
>1150 socket ones aren't sold anymore
>has to buy a new 1151 CPU, DDR4 RAM for the new motherboard
>>58859681
Newegg still sells them, and even when they stop, there's always secondhand.
>didnt take care of his stuff
>breaks
>mad when he has to pay to replace it
fuck off this is ALL your fault
>>58859711
Go drink bleach, shit for brains.
8k is unironically the resolution end game
>>58859651
8k will be the first acceptable resolution for phones, m8. Really you'll want 6k though.
We won't have decent resolution on monitors until 64k.
>>58859753
*16k
Ok
Roast my setup, My friends can't find any flaws.
>>58859644
Your TV is off centre, you have too much shit on that power strip, and why do you need an xbox controller and two computers?
>what is cable management
cables are laying on the carpet.
kind of messy
