because as much as I like XFCE it's not for everyone. Some people don't like fiddling around to get a compositor without tearing, most people just want an animeshitmachine and other DEs serve that pretty well compared to XFCE. I do love me some XFCE+Compton though, shit's smooth and lightweight (300mb RAM on Boot)

Okay, honest question here.

Does anyone else feel like there is this weirdly common conjunction between mental illness and technology careers? A disproportinally large group of people I've met so far that truly want to go far in this field have had some sort of mental issue in the past or present, and in general they have all been very "existential" people. In addition, it is becoming a trope in movies and television. Is this just me, or does anyone experience anything similar?

Are these stats acceptable? I wont be doing much gaming etc but I will be doing some light video editing/surfing/streaming. Pls let me know!

No Core 2 Duo laptop on the planet that still works is worth more than about $75 and that's a top of the line model with maxed out RAM, etc.

The one you're interested in is literally worth about $40 and that's being somewhat generous. It won't do gaming unless you're playing games prior to 2007, video editing won't be doable for a variety of reasons (slow hard drive, low RAM, old CPU, etc).

You're better off looking for a ThinkPad T400 or T410 for about $100-150 USD these days, Core i5 or i7 (even 1st gen Core models).

Don't waste a dime on that one, find something better.

Do other GNU/Linux distributions have any advantages over Linux Mint?

Mint is the worst of the popular distributions, easily.

It's like this, right.
Debian works.
It's complicated, nonstandard, difficult at times, but it works.
So people fork debian expecting their distros to work too, but they're clueless of how debian is set up so they'll run into issues they can't comprehend.
Well, at least canonical is competent. With Linux in general, but not in the debian variation of Linux.
But then there's the team maintaining mint. And these people are actually incompetent. Their websites have been hacked a few times, they are slow to add security fixes, they overwrite some packages from debian and Ubuntu repositories causing missing or wrong dependencies, and they ignore most legalities with different software licenses.

Mint is the worst distro you could use or suggest to people.
If it just werks for you, that's because you need proprietary drivers and firmware mint shouldn't distribute.

I'll also note that Manjaro is in similar position to mint, but without that competent company in the chain.
>>
I find mint to be quite user friendly, and reliable. A whole lot less fucking around than my gentoo machine is.

I see that Ryzen now has hyperthreading.
Isn't that an Intel technology? How did they manage to get it?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Hyperthreading is just intel's branding for their own implementation of SMT. Intel didn't invent the concept of SMT.
Several other architectures utilize virtual threads via SMT, like IBM's POWER processors.
>>
>>58954935
Hyperthreading is intel's own branding of SMT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_multithreading)

They tweak some things here and there and call it their own shit for marketing purposes.

>But Im feeling like I cant learn anything "important" in my current job

Welcome to the real world. Get used to that feeling.

Here's how life works:

1) Scam your way into a job that you're unqualified for.

2) Turns out the job is nothing like the job description.

3) Get bored as fuck immediately.

4) Put up with it for as long as you can take.

5) Apply to new jobs. Lie because you desperately want that position.

6) Get new job. Turns out it's nothing like the job description...

Since Winblows 10 and DX12, SLI/XFire can't be utilised anymore (until developers stop being lazy, which could take years if it happens at all)

At the same time, since graphics cards always get more powerful, and we now have a huge jump in manufacturing process, and HBM on the way, older games that can utilise SLI are less of a problem for the cards

Putting those 2 together, is SLI no longer worthwhile, because the only games that can utilise it are old enough so that one top tier card can run them fine, and new games that are more demanding don't benefit from SLI anyway?

Not looking to start a trollfest, want a genuine answer here

>>
You are correct.
This is how it's been for years now, SLI/CF has been dead outside of raw compute tasks for a long time now
Tons of continuity problems, consistency/timing issues, and lack of support.
Next time look it up first.

There will be a point where the pci bus wont handle the throughput and the need for multiple GPU's will be common place.
>>
>>58954710
PCIe 2.0 x16 is more than enough for really any GPU on the market, there's not a lot of PCIe throughput really, and it's not likely to shoot up anytime soon
But if you are concerned, PCIe 3.0 is twice as fast as 2.0, and the upcoming PCIe 4.0 is twice as fast as that, and PCI/PCIe scales perfectly with the new standards
so I wouldn't worry

I'm looking to buy/mod a

Nintendo Wii
PS2
and Xbox 360

to get the BIGGEST library of games
for the cheapest amount of money

I'll start with the Wii first because from basic reading, this seems to be the easiest to mod, and the BIGGEST library of games.

What kind of things should I be looking for to buy a modded PS2 and Xbox 360?

Also, is everything in the photo accurate? Ex: Can a modded PS2 play PS1 games? Can a modded 360 play the huge list of compatible Original Xbox games?
63 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Why I'm not interested in DS games: I stream games on Twitch, and buying a DS with a capture card is expensive as shit and having it modded as well would be a ton of money... not even sure if that combination of the two is even possible.

This list excludes the PS3 by nature.. but if there is a way to get PS3 games I'd do that.
>>
>>58954621
How about go to /v/?

Nintendo shits got perfect emulation. Sony shits (ps2 bellow) near perfect. Why dont just build a pc?
If its the console novelty you look for, wii is perfect, not sure about ps2, 360 only can play several xbox gigant titles.
Wii is the cheapest and the most games if you count wii+gcube+snes+nes title i guess. Wii and gcube is guaranteed perfect, emulated n64/snes/nes not sure.
>>
>>58954663
I do have a PC
But streaming + emulating needs a REALLY damn good computer

My CPU is an i7 4790k and on PS2 games for example, it lags. Also there is no such thing as 360 emulation.

So basically.. this would be even better, because no single game would cause my stream to lag. Also MUCH less tech difficulties because I'd be streaming these using the console + computer
