I’ve been thinking of building a computer just for test/playing around purposes. How low can I go in terms of money and parts if I want a computer that can still install modern applications( arduino playground, virtual box) so I can can actually work with it, be able to connect to modern devices( raspberry pi, arduino ETC). I basically just want a computer I can experiment with, and go as low as I can without having to worry about accidently fucking it up since it’s low investment and won’t have anything on it.
i don't know where you live, but I bet you can buy an i5 optiplex from your local craigslist for 100 bucks. if you want to do gaming you will have to get something that can house a real power supply though.
but srsly computers are dirt cheap
Just buy any used shit box that has at least an i3 in it, hell you could even go as low as a Core2Duo if need be.
Virtualization is different though, you'll need at least some power to do that.
>>59037363
Don't get an i3 or a core duo because they are fucking annoyingly shit. You should be able to get something with an i5 for around $100 easy.
have you ever wanted to use linux but couldn't get into it because you had a ton of programs already installed and in use on one system?
that's the most debilitating factor for me here.
install gentoo my dude
>>59036806
What programs are you using that are the most important?
>>59039089
im using abelton live, zbrush, photoshop, reaper, verve painter, source filmaker, xnalara xps, xmind, freeplane, notepad++, Celtx, blender and autodesk Maya/Softimage.
Post 'em /g/
Y'all came from the /r/linuxmasterrace meme. Fucking normies.
i really need help bros ive been trying to run an epsxe emulator but i cant get it to work. im no expert but maybe it has to do with my windows 7. if i look for the specs it will say its a 64 bit but if i go to the graphics card info itll say its a 32 bit pic related. Please any help will be appreciated
>>59036621
Did you download a bios file?
Just Google a setup guide there are loads of them. Make sure its a recent one too. Just don't follow sketchy YouTube tutorials having you download stuff from file lockers...
>>59036621
>graphics card info itll say its a 32 bit
you seem extremely tech illiterate...
>>59036621
Looks like you're CPU (and probably OS as well) are 64-bit, but your video mode is 32-bit COLOR DEPTH. Has nothing to do with the word size of your processor, it's the number of bits used to store each pixel on your screen. Just like you can write text documents in ASCII encoding (8 bits per character) whether you're an an 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit or 64-bit computer.
does /g/ have any experience with hdmi/vga converters?
I need one and apparently I need an active one. I can get pic related for very cheap but apparently they don't *always* work as intended. Can anyone help?
>>59036515
No personal experience with those but if you find one with 400+ mhz pixel clock, please do tell.
Use a dvi to VGA adapter, they are more reliable
>>59036515
They are always active because HDMI is digital and VGA is analog.
AFAIK they should always work up to at least full HD.

>Apple says the world doesn't need floppy disks anymore
>the tech world kills them
>Says we need DVD's instead
>We follow them
>Later says we don't need the DVD drive anymore, and sacrifices them for thinness in laptops
>DVD's drives is now almost non existent in both laptops and desktops
>Now says we need USB C
Can Apple do it again /g/?
>>59036264
no because steve jobs is dead and the company always goes to shit when hes not around
>>59036290
I'd like to point out that Apple was a failure as far back as the Apple 2. The BASIC on the machine sucked, and they had to get Microsoft's version to do floating point math.
Apple got Microsoft to make applications for the initial Macs.
Apple continues to rely on Microsoft to make applications for the Mac so that they can remain competitive in the business arena.
Apple would be a dead company by now had Microsoft not bailed them out with a ton of money in the late 90's.
Apple said PowerPC was superior to x86 technology, but now they use Intel.
Apple said their OS was faster and more secure that Windows, but then they switched to unix with a flashy interface.
Seriously, Apple is run by a lunatic of a man who wants everything his way and only his way. This is why there's always been disaterously retarded hardware and software aspects over the years. One button mouse, window buttons at the top left, single file menu at the top in the day of true multitasking, etc etc etc. Apple is living in the 80's, on modern hardware.
What have we learned here? Modern-day Apples are overpriced Linux boxes with a flashy shell. The end.
>>59036315
There's nothing wrong with a one-button mouse, unless you are a cripple with one arm.
...that lets me add boxes with lots of text & links into the tree/structure, ones that I can see without clicking on "notes" like in XMind and other programs... Something kinda like in this draft I made in photoshop.
Most of the programs I checked don't let you put comments or notes directly visible on the map.

Have you had a look at pencil. It's open source and I'm pretty sure you can write comments wherever you like. Just Google pencil application and you should find it.

I'm looking for a device to transfer files from computers, that are not connected to any networks, to cloud. My university lab is full of equipment that run on ancient computers that are not connected to either the internet or wifi networks. I'm constantly forgetting to backup the files from the USB I use to transfer data files from those machines to my own computer, and I also keep forgetting my USB drives to the computers because the ports are in fucked up spots.
Do things like USB drives that automatically upload their contents to cloud or nearby wifi connected devices exist?
>>59035965
They exist
https://www.sandisk.com/home/mobile-device-storage/connect-wireless-stick
But they are 100% botnet
>>59035991
But that is kind of the opposite of what I'm looking for. I'm looking for USB drive that you can plug into machines and always have the contents be updated with cloud.
>>59036141
you can do this with an android phone
Is it actually useful or should I keep using regular torrenting methods
Just stick to torrenting, just learn how to sequence the packages so you can view while torrenting.

>Work as IT guy at lumber company
>Switching to weight-based pricing, drive-thru lumber yard in all locations
>Need a custom point-of-sale system developed for all of this
>Boss decides to hire American software firm that is 1 hour away through word of mouth
>They have a good portfolio and some good things said about them online
>Have skype meeting, explain what we need, send some pictures, tell them equipment we are using etc.
>Pay them $80,000 over 3 months (originally supposed to cost $45,000 and 2 months).
>They email a google drive link for download and give no instruction about setup
>2-weeks of fucking with it and barely get it working
>Boss demands they drive out here to help us
>They claim they are too busy, they delivered the product as defined in the deal
>Alright, it's finally working
>Use it for 2 months
>It works like crap, we are losing money on sales because math is wrong on some calculations, software terminates for no reason at all in the middle of a sale
>Start using paper, pen, and calculator to do sales manually again. Back to square one
>Talk to another lumber yard that we do business deals with on occassion
>They recommend indian based Pajeet software company
>Pajeet flys from India to our location in the USA
>Spends 1 week going over all the requirements and needs, observes our daily business tasks, etc.
>Quotes $20,000 and 5 weeks time
>3 weeks later the software is done. 50 pages of documentation on setup, use, troubleshooting included
>Get $6,000 credit for support because they only used $14,000 for development
>Pajeet flys back out and spends 1 week setting it up and 1 more week training our employees/me on it's use
>Been using it for 3 months and zero issues
Please explain your myth about Pajeet being bad coders /g/
>>59035801
Did the lumber company get their money back for the shit tier American made software or were they just screwed out of 80,000 buckaroos?
>>59035801
kind of just sounds like you guys didnt define your requirements well, and the second time around when you talked to the indians you could talk about all the things you thought you needed more in depth because you lacked them from the american company
if there's no documentation and setup and the guy can say "we delivered as promised in the deal" and your boss goes "well ok i guess he's right", guess who fucked up?

Is Last Pass a good way to keep my passwords out of the botnet?
Well it'll make you stop worrying about whether or not the botnet has your passwords. Because you just gave them to it.
It's literally a service where you give your passwords to the botnet
I'm on the lookout for a gaming computer and found this on OD, is this good for the price? The reviews says it is but anyone can put those up. That said, some of the specs are pretty good like the graphics being dedicated, 8gb RAM.
