Ok /g/ - What is going on with linux and gaming?
Shifted from windows to linux and enjoyed the transition - very smooth and I'm still enjoying the experience. However, trying to get some games running on this machine has been difficult to say the least.

Now I'm not some lazy neet who spends every free hour gaming, but I do enjoy the occasional RPG or Strategy game, and I'd like to continue my hobby using linux.

I don't play very graphically intensive games either, recently trying to get the likes of Stellaris or CK2 to work has been a trying experience. The recent release of Pillars of Eternity is also something I'd like to play but am having trouble running smoothly. I'm running openSUSE also which doesn't seem like the most optimized distro for this purpose.

So what's the deal /g/? Should I give up and dual boot windows? Install a different distro that supports gaming a bit better like ubuntu? or persist in trying to fix whatever is shit with this current install of linux until I get stuff working at an acceptable level. At the moment I'm kind of stuck, considering to dual boot windows but I really would rather stick with linux. But if I can't have my cake and eat it too then I feel like I'm being forced into a corner.

If you're not doing anything graphically intensive, give Wine a try. After you install Wine, you literally just use terminal and
wine some_windows_installer.exe

Generally when it finishes you'll even have a shortcut mixed in with your normal Linux launchers. I've used it to install a bunch of Windows-only GoG games using the GoG installer as-is and it works fine. Heroes 3 works like a goddamn charm.

For 3D games, anything using OpenGL or Vulkan is best. Nothing needs to be translated, so you get same or better performance.

I'll give wine another go. I have a big catalog of steam games so I'll need to do some research on how I can play them through wine.

How come even the times AMD has vastly superior GPUs to Nvidia, they still sell less?
Like the HD 5770 & HD 5870 that pooped on the GTX 480 by 30% better price/performance, and the HD 7970 that pooped on the GTX 580 by over 50% better price/performance, and still pooped on the GTX 680 which came out a year later but people still bought overpriced 580s and 680s anyway.

Even when the 9000 series launched which was literally double the performance per dollar of overpriced FX shit, they still didn't overtake then.

Mainly marketing and parroting. Looking at both gpus and cpus we can see that intel and nvidia have a fair amount of fear mongering to make people stick to them. They also have a lot of contracts with manufacturers which strengthen their brand image. I'll get people saying shit but a fx8350 and hd7970 combo was great at the time and im glad i purchased it. Still good.

We can clearly see this isnt working right now however, amds stock has quadrupled and their rx series is going strong right now and ryzen is looking to be a great success.

Yo /g/ I've saved up about $4000 for a fucking epic PC build, no expenses spared.

So far, I'm thinking this:

ryzen 1800x = $550
2x gtx 1080 = $1200
Some asus a4 motherboard ≈ $250 max
512gb pcie ssd to start with
850W psu, gold ≈ $125
custom watercooling ≈ $850
16gb corsair dom platinum ram = $300 for now, may go 32 later
Some 4k 60hz monitor ≈ $500-600 for now, will buy the new asus 1440p 120hz one when it comes out later this year

Thoughts, especially on the GPU and CPU? Recommendations on things I haven't decided yet?

Note: I'm not getting the 1080ti's because that puts me $400 over budget. When ti comes out, 1080 prices will probably drop. Besides, I'm getting a soundcard, network card, and some customization too so I want to fit that in as well. Also pic not related

Well, The last computer that my dad bought to me was a PII 300. When I realized all the effort he put into getting the money to buy it, I appreciate him even more.

My old man is ded, and I cant bring myself to throw away that computer. I even have the original box of the PII. maybe one day I'll dissasemble it and store the CPU in its box.

Thanks based dad.
