Is it possible to achieve a truly minimalistic windows at all at this point?
Windows 7 is not an answer, as it will never get another service pack, leaving enough updates to weigh down any tiny PC.

"I'm not a fan of religiously taking some idea to the extreme, and I try to be pragmatic in my design choices (but not *too* pragmatic, see the start of this sentence :-). I value readability and usefulness for real code. There are some places where map() and filter() make sense, and for other places Python has list comprehensions. I ended up hating reduce() because it was almost exclusively used (a) to implement sum(), or (b) to write unreadable code. So we added builtin sum() at the same time we demoted reduce() from a builtin to something in functools (which is a dumping ground for stuff I don't really care about :-).

If I think of functional programming, I mostly think of languages that have incredibly powerful compilers, like Haskell. For such a compiler, the functional paradigm is useful because it opens up a vast array of possible transformations, including parallelization. But Python's compiler has no idea what your code means, and that's useful too. So, mostly I don't think it makes much sense to try to add "functional" primitives to Python, because the reason those primitives work well in functional languages don't apply to Python, and they make the code pretty unreadable for people who aren't used to functional languages (which means most programmers).

I also don't think that the current crop of functional languages is ready for mainstream. Admittedly I don't know much about the field besides Haskell, but any language *less* popular than Haskell surely has very little practical value, and I haven't heard of functional languages *more* popular than Haskell. As for Haskell, I think it's a great proving ground for all sorts of ideas about compiler technology, but I think its "purity" will always remain in the way of adoption. Having to come to grips with Monads just isn't worth it for most people." -Guido van Rossum

I didn't see one, so here goes.

I am planning on expanding my home network and I am going to get another HP Microserver because they're good shit. I have TP-Link routers but I plan on replacing those too, recommend me better networking hardware /g/.

Current HP Microserver is a G8 series
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core
RAM: 4GB (will expand to 16 soon)
HDD: 500GB (OS Debian 8)

For now I am using it mostly as storage and media server, plan on using the second one more productively.

Custom built PC in minitower,
CPU: Intel Celeron G1820T
RAM: 8GB (1.5GB used, don't even need to expand it anytime soon)
HDD: 1TB (+ 64GB SSD for rolling web/DB backups) CentOS 7

Does it's job, was very cheap to put together.

As for the better networking hardware, MikroTik? Decent price for what it does.

I'm fed up with qBittorrent... it takes 200MB for 20 torrents (10 active) and it doesn't properly exits.
What are the alternatives? What's good? I used to use Transmission -- how is it now? I've heard good things about Deluge,
but the project doesn't seem very active (which sometimes is actually a good thing, I dunno {what, why}tf they keep changing in qB...).

I know some of you autists unironically love these, so I figured I'd ask here at the expensive of triggering the whole board.

Is the 1366x768 screen really that bad on these? I know the resolution is on the lower side but I mean is the TN panel really that bad?

>1366x768 [TN] screen really that bad on these?
Yes, but there is a IPS option for the x220, it is still pretty bad though.

768p is also just too low res in general, even for a 12" screen.
>>
95% of ThinkPads on eBay UK that go for a reasonable price are TN panels. Should I just go for a Dell Latitude?

So I have the need of a second pc for rendering video.

I need cores and ram, which started me wondering about a server motherboard, dual cpu.

I got no idea how these works, hence this thread.

Seeing as there's two cpus, one would think that they work individually, not together.
Can they work together and enable faster render times in AE for example?

Same goes for the ram, is it all put together or are they allotted for each cpu?

Can I run win10?

Where would a bottleneck appear?

Anyone using something like this for the purpose of video encoding?

>Can they work together and enable faster render times in AE for example?
If it takes advantage of multiple cores, then yes. There is a delay in transferring data from one physical CPU to the other but this isn't usually significant. Programmers have to worry about it, you probably don't, and can treat two eight-core CPUs as one sixteen-core CPU.

The RAM is all put together. Generally each CPU needs to have some in its DIMM slots though. Again, it takes longer to get data from CPU A's RAM into CPU B's cores - this is called NUMA. But again, it's something that you generally only have to worry about if youre the programmer writing the application, not the guy using it.

The main chance of a bottleneck isn't a bottleneck at all, it's that your video-rendering program has a ceiling on the number of cores it can usefully employ. Scaling is never perfect, and you always run into diminishing returns some time. I don't know where that is for your video-renderer, look it up.

last time i checked they had over 100 Billion Cash safely stored away in the bank

i guess they invest in R&D, build their new Apple Campus meme. Invest in marketing and the wheel keeps on turning. They could look into buying up more companies and eventually expand into something else.

Cars would be an interesting project for them. Tesla basically stole their approach and vertical integration from top to bottom. With the Tesla infrastructure in place and a partnership they could sell legit Apple Cars and have them ready with a decent supply structure immediately.
