At January 19, 2038 03:14:07 GMT the UNIX epoch time will end. Are you prepared for the big crash?

No it won't end. The number type will be changed to 8 bytes imho

That's only an issue for 32-bit devices and OpenBSD's already got it fixed

Isn't it already changed to 64 bits even on 32-bit computers?

is this just 2013 /g/ meme stuff or is it still useful?

Dumb niggers use VLC
normal people use MPC-HC
/g/ memesters use mpv
>>
>>59241481
It's useful if you add madvr but both was deprecated by mpv. If you want minimalism and editing text files doesn't intimidate you use mpv directly. If you want a replacement for mpc user one of the players that uses mpv as backend. Smplayer is pretty good and allows you to configure everything from a gui, you can fetch it from chocolatey for extra comfiness if you're using windows.

I'm thinking of upgrading my r9 200 series GPU to a GTX 1080.

Cheapest I can get is the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G OC for 550 euro. ~600$

Is this a good card? Would it be viable for next-gen games for the next 3 - 4 years?

Op why don't you search for a zotac? I don't know how much pic related cost but if you just want to get a 1080 for as little as possible I'm pretty sure zotac makes the cheapest ones

Anyone have experience with this monitor or brand? anything i should know about?

I remember making a thread asking how much programming I might be doing if I took an IT course and basically everyone (assumedly Americans) said probably none. Now that I'm actually doing an IT degree (at a polytechnic (community college in Burgerspeak) ) I am in fact learning programming - so I'm wondering why everyone said the opposite. I hear that at actual universities it's 100% theory work and you can do a whole degree without ever programming on a keyboard. If that's true is that the case everywhere or just in America?

Not really true, you do programming but it's probably not something you're going to do when you get a job. Though it's usually good stuff to know anyway.

What happens a lot of the time is you graduate, then get a job doing webdev which you didn't learn in school.

I'm self taught by looking at university calendars and doing the assignments.

They are all programming, all the time, often taking hours per day. "Write a program that does X, Y and Z, then add feature A". The basic intro courses are just one line programming assignments (write a return statement that does X) you could accomplish with a pencil and paper but the second year and more courses are all heavy with programming labs and assignments. For example I had to rewrite most of stdlib.h with my own malloc, I had to implement concurrency and rewrite locks in a dbms, I had to build a mini kernel, I had to create a distributed system from scratch, ect ect.

You can't even do The Art of Computer Programming without actual programming since at the end of each chapter, the 500 or so exercises most of them start with "Write a MIXAL program that...."

They're not far off, biometric security is used all over the place. At this point passwords are essentially a relic.

biometrics aren't passwords but passwords are completely obsolete. They're still in use but horrible. Most people move onto password management secured behind crypto just to handhold the antique broken password systems.

What's with people and bashing AMD for making exactly what they promised?

>Polaris 10 will Rival the 390X with a significant boost in efficiency

It does

It does.

Retarded fanboys who dream of a world where only Intel and nVidia exist so they can pay $1500 for a midrange CPU or graphics card, and who are too dumb to realize that without competition neither intel nor nvidia would actually do jackshit to build better chips but just keep crank up prices.
>>
>What's with people and bashing AMD for making exactly what they promised?

Gaymen. Always fucking gaymen. They haven't changed in the last 15 years with GPUs so they're not going to change ever. If something beats something else by 5 FPS it's "BTFO". Now we must resort to running at lower resolutions or using 200+ FPS metrics, of which no one needs, uses or should even care about. Shall we just do all gaymen bechmarks at 640x480, 16 colours in software rendering mode? It'd make Terry happy at least.

So I'm actually feeling pretty good about myself because I wrote my own version of tar for my systems programming class. I'd like to take it a step further by implementing compression, but I can't find any information about how the system tar calls gzip to compress data. Is there anywhere I can find information about how I would implement this, or even write my own basic compression?

>>
That's awesome anon, good work. Review the tar source code for clues as to how you'd reimplement this
>>
>>59238918
Thanks! That does seem like a rather obvious place to start. I wanting to keep from viewing the source as much as possible and just using what I already know, but at this point that's probably just an unnecessary handicap

AMD selling GPU/CPU combos are going to crush Intel and Nvidia, as selling both at once means they can cut their margins on the individual products, much like they have done with their console contracts. Up until now, AMD's CPUs haven't been good enough to make it a compelling option, but that has now changed. It's going to be really hard for people to justify paying hundreds of dollars more for slightly better performance from Intelvidia.

I'm building a new pc. Is there a difference between having RAM installed as 1x16 or 2x8? Is there a benefit to having two sticks of RAM?

install fucking gentoo
>>
>>59238413
Getting larger module capacity increases your expansion options (e.g. with a 4 slot board and 16GiB modules you get a max of 64GB) while smaller module size but at least 2 modules will allow you to utilize dual channel (i.e. more bandwidth).
